Telematics and infotainment Insight

Telecom operators flex their muscles within automotive telematics The news has been filled lately by stories of telecom operators scooping up contracts with vehicle manufacturers or acquiring players within the telematics market.

The biggest of these was Verizon’s acquisition of Hughes Telematics for a surprisingly large sum of $612 Million. Hughes supports OE telematics services offered by Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen in the USA. Whilst the acquisition is unlikely to help Hughes expand business across other markets such as Europe (where it has traditionally struggled), it will undoubtedly improve its position in the USA against other major players such as Agero and Sprint. The acquisition of Hughes has also led to intense speculation about other ‘traditional’ TSPs being acquired by telecom operators in an attempt to strengthen their offerings. Watch out for announcements in the coming months! In China, telecom operators are already amongst the most dominant telematics players. China Unicom in particular has become almost synonymous with telematics, aggressively promoting itself as an end-to-end provider of everything OEMs might need (SIMs, call centers, dispatchers, content, etc). China Telecom is following close behind, and although China Mobile (the giant of the telecom world) has been slower it still has the resources and political clout to make more than a few waves within the telematics market. So why all the sudden interest amongst telecom operators? Those with longer memories will recollect that telecom operators invested heavily in telematics during the first wave of telematics in the early 2000s, which failed alongside the dot-com bubble. Since then, most telecom operators scaled back their M2M business, preferring to act as providers of data and voice plans. The recent spike in activity reflects a growing feeling within the telecom world that automotive telematics is finally at an inflection point, and that telecom operators have an opportunity to become more than just a SIM provider.  Opportunities and challenges for OEMs SBD clients: Click Regardless of whether this confidence is misplaced or not, vehicle manufacturers stand to benefit from or scan the QR the increased participation of telecom operators. codes below to At an industry-wide level, closer involvement from telecom operators makes it easier for vehicle view the following manufacturers to address problems that have been holding back telematics for many years. The reports: widespread uncertainty surrounding tethering is one such problem, creating confusion amongst some drivers about whether their phone or contract is compatible with their in-car telematics system. These are the kind of issues that are now being addressed through the GSMA Connected Car Forum, which was initiated by the telecoms industry as a way to bridge the gap between the automotive and telecom world. At a company-specific level, vehicle manufacturers also stand to gain from the growing aspirations of The impact of telecom operators. Pricing is becoming more competitive, as telecom operators begin to offer attractive changing M2M quotes that combine the cost of SIMs and the TSP. The fall in quoted prices of voice and data are making strategies on the it easier for vehicle manufacturers to develop more attractive business models. Connected Car  Not all good news though Despite these upsides, some OEMs have highlighted concerns about the growing profile of telecom operators within the telematics world. Primarily amongst these is a concern about becoming tied-down to a single telecom operator that controls the end-to-end value chain for their services (SIMs, TSP, call centre, content, etc). However, as long as OEMs are cautious in designing their service architecture to Using the driver's comply with standards such as NGTP, SBD believes this risk can be minimized. data plan for telematics: Is it A bigger concern is that the acquisitions of traditional TSPs (such as Hughes) by telecom operators viable or not? reduces the choice for OEMs, as it may lead to certain TSPs only being paired with certain telecom operators. The logic for this is that other telecom operators may be reluctant to work with a TSP such as Hughes now that it is owned by a potential competitor (Verizon). Ironically, the complexity of the telematics market may therefore increase even as the value chain goes through a period of acquisitions and consolidation. China: Shanghai OnStar launches ‘Remote Ignition Block’ service Shanghai OnStar has announced the Remote Ignition Block (RIB) service which provides an additional safeguard against theft of OnStar-equipped vehicles.

If their vehicle is stolen, OnStar customers should first report the theft to the police. Upon receiving confirmation of the theft from the police, OnStar will remotely block the stolen car’s engine from starting. The vehicle will not be able to be restarted until OnStar deactivates ignition blocking. Remote engine blocking extends and upgrades OnStar’s Stolen Vehicle Location service. RIB is available on the majority of OnStar-equipped models from Shanghai GM. The service is included as part of existing OnStar service packages without extra cost. Shanghai OnStar was established on Oct. 28, 2009, by General Motors, SAIC and Shanghai GM. The joint venture is an industry leader in providing safety, maintenance and telematics services for selected GM models manufactured and sold in China. As of the end of July 2012, OnStar had more than 450,000 customers in China and had helped resolve more than 900 vehicle thefts. OnStar has 6 million subscribers worldwide. Since its inception, it has provided interactive services about 253 million times, winning wide acclaim from subscribers and becoming the industry leader in the telematics market.

Drivers throughout Brazil are already well aware that traffic is a major problem. A study by the company titled “Traffic in Brazil”, reinforced this by showing that Brazilians now spend an average 40 more minutes per day in traffic jams. One major contributing factor to the increase in time spent in traffic jams is the number of cars that are on the road. Brazil has recently surpassed Germany as the 4th largest automotive market in the world with 3.5 million vehicles sold in 2011. With Traffic Incidents, consumers can now access more complete real-time information on traffic flow, enabling them to find alternative routes to avoid traffic. Drivers in Brazil can know the reason traffic is slow or at a standstill, making them more informed, and helping cut down on frustration caused by traffic delays. Additionally, Nokia also announced that NAVTEQ Traffic has expanded its offering to drivers in Brasilia (DF) making the total number of metropolitan areas covered to be 13 and growing. Telematics insurance has been one of the most widely discussed topics within the Connected Car world over the last two years. However, according to SBD’s research the overall market for telematics insurance is still immature and faces major challenges. SBD’s new report analyses the positive and negative impacts that a growing market for telematics insurance could have on automotive telematics strategies. The report outlines ways in which vehicle manufacturers and insurers could work together to minimise the barriers that are holding back both industries from expanding the penetration of telematics. Additionally, areas of potential conflict are analysed, as both vehicle manufacturers and insurers strive to maintain control over vehicle data (particularly First Notification of Loss – FNOL). The result is a hype-free assessment of the future growth potential for telematics insurance, along with an in-depth analysis of the opportunities and threats that this growth will present to the automotive industry.
