Efficiency scores based on team performance and player salary data from 1985 to 2006 are computed and included as covariates in a survival time analysis. It is shown that when controlling for performance and personal characteristics minorities are on average 9.6 percentage points more likely to return the following season. Addi- tionally, it is shown that winning percentage has no impact on managerial survival when efficiency is controlled for. However, previous research has failed to link the two subjects by including race as a factor when examining managerial retention in professional sports. The analysis presented in this paper looks to fill this gap in the literature by providing a thorough analysis of the effects of minority status on managerial survival in Major League Baseball.

However, after steady improvement in both areas for several years, this year there were decreases in the percentages of people of color and women in several categories. Overall, baseball received an A for race and a B- for gender in the 2011 Report Card. The Racial and Gender Report Card annually asks, “Are we playing fair when it comes to sports? Does everyone, regardless of race or gender, have a chance at bat or to operate a team?” Baseball’s grade for race dipped slightly from 92.5 to 91.6, while its grade for gender dropped from 82 to 79.3. Baseball’s overall score for the 2011 Report Card is 85.5, which is lower than the 2010 score of 87.3 that was MLB’s best-ever combined score. MLB’s combined grade for 2011 is a B+. Richard Lapchick, principal author of the study and director of The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES) at the University of Central Florida, said, “Bud Selig has helped make MLB’s central and team front offices look more like America. “Jackie Robinson’s dream was to see more African-Americans playing, coaching and in the front office.

"As we got into Spring Training and opened the season with the bad start, we wanted to keep providing opportunities to see if we could turn this thing around," Braves president of baseball operations John Hart said before Atlanta's 12-9 loss on Tuesday. "It obviously didn't look like it was going to happen. [Braves general manager John Coppolella] and I started talking about this four or five days ago and saying, 'How much longer do you want to wait?'" The Braves initially discussed dismissing Gonzalez during their 0-9 start to the season and again during an eight-game losing streak during the latter part of April. Hart and Coppolella opted to hold off while accounting for Ender Inciarte's month-long stint on the disabled list and the reality that many of their offseason roster decisions had not gone according to plan and left Gonzalez with a flawed roster.
