CARMEL C A T H O L I Winter 2012 A quarterly newsletter celebrating our former students and present supporters Mount Carmel Academy • Chaplain Kapaun Memorial • Kapaun Mt. Carmel Pastors Day at KMC On January 19, we were pleased to welcome Bishop Michael O. Jackels and many priests of the Diocese of Wichita to Kapaun Mt. Carmel for Pastors Day. We invited all of the pastors and associate pastors of the parishes to which our students belong, and were pleased that so many of our beloved priests of the diocese were able to join us. The festivities began with our January all-school Mass with Bishop Jackels presiding. Including KMC chaplain Fr. Aaron Spexarth, the Mass was concelebrated by ten priests from various parishes around the area; several other priests joined us following Mass. With the Catholic schools of the Diocese of Wichita being funded through the generous stewardship commitments of the faithful of the diocese, Bishop’s homily appropriately focused on the value of the education KMC H I G S C O L students receive. He reminded them of their own stewardship commitments, and encouraged them to thank their pastors, parents and fellow parishioners for the significant sacrifices they make to support Catholic education. Following Mass, each of the priests had time to meet with the students of his own parish. Various priests used the time to informally visit with their students, to administer a quick religion quiz, to remind them of their stewardship commitments, etc. It was apparent that all of the priests and the students enjoyed their time together. During that same period of time, our non-Catholic students met with assistant principal Chris Bloomer to discuss their experiences at Kapaun Mt. Carmel and how we might make it an even more welcoming environment in the future. As the students returned to the routine of their class schedules, the priests met with KMC administrators and other staff members in the Crusader Lounge. We provided updates on such topics as liturgical opportunities offered on campus, academic options and student achievements, extra-curricular activities, a profile of our faculty, and financial/funding results. The priests asked many good questions, and we had an enjoyable conversation. Prior to leaving KMC, the priests were treated to a wonderful lunch buffet prepared by Denise Unruh and her Crusader Café staff. I am told that a similar event was held a number of years ago prior to my arrival on the scene. With the positive feedback we’ve received from Bishop Jackels and the priests of the diocese, we certainly plan on repeating Pastors Day at KMC in future years, making it an annual event. As I often tell individual priests of the diocese, we are all in this Catholic educational system together (it is important to remember that there is no tuition for Catholic students whose families are living their stewardship commitments at their parishes). Thank you, Crusaders! To date we have raised nearly $190,000 toward our goal of $300,000 for this year, including gifts from more than 300 of our alumni. Won’t you please help? Carmel through the Annual Fund. • Using facebook, email, or word of mouth, challenge other members of your class to do the same. • Start a friendly competition with other classes to participate in the Annual Fund. Reunions A number of classes have started work on their class reunions for this summer. If you class year ends in “2” or “7”, this year is a reunion year for your class. Reunion Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School’s mission is “to educate and form the total per- son in the image of Jesus Christ.” The school is committed to continuing its long tradition of excellence in academics, athletics and extra-curricular activities within the contest of Christian and moral formation. Kapaun Mt. Carmel is now accepting enrollment applica- tions for students in grades 9 through 12 for the 2012-13 school year. We invite both our fellow Catholics and our brothers and sisters of other denominations to join our school community. We are fully accredited by the State of Kansas and North Central Asso- ciation. Carmel Facilities Funding Update It has now been a year since we completed construction of the most recent phase (Phase 3) of the Facilities Master Plan – the Coach Herm and Jackie Bachrodt Athletic Complex. I thought this would be a good time to provide an update on that project, as well as a brief summary of the construction projects that preceded it. Having recently started the second year using the new athletic complex, it is easy to look back and realize that it is a special place – for our student athletes (competitive teams and PE classes), our coaches, our fans, and the overall Kapaun Mt. Carmel community. During its first year, we drew great crowds for our varsity volleyball, wrestling and basketball events; in fact, out of the ten basketball H I G S C O L evenings we hosted, our old gym probably would not have accommodated the crowds we drew for seven or eight of the games. Attendance at this fall’s volleyball games has also been strong, and would have certainly stretched the seating capacity of our old gym. Of great importance, as well, are the artificial turf on the football field, the new 8-lane track, and various other improvements of the outdoor athletic fields. The new athletic complex complements beautifully the student commons we completed in 2007 as part of Phase 2 of the Master Plan.

The Mids, who won both the Patriot League Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships, were closely followed by Lehigh with 40 honorees and Holy Cross with 37. Bucknell (32), Boston University (27), Colgate (24) and Lafayette (22) also exceeded 20 student-athletes on the list. The total of 247 honorees marked an increase of 16 from last season’s mark of 231. Each of the 14 student-athletes who made either the Indoor or Outdoor Track and Field Academic All-Patriot League Team also qualified for the Academic Honor Roll, including Navy’s Tom Buffone, who won the Corvias Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for both seasons. Buffone, a senior Physics major, was one of four Academic All-Patriot League honorees to achieve a grade- point average of 4.00 or better in the spring semester. He was joined in that group by sophomore teammate Nate Gainey, Colgate senior James Paris and Lehigh senior Sebastian Nicewicz. There were a total of 22 student-athletes with a 4.00 GPA in the spring semester, with the rest of the list including Bucknell freshman Kyle Adams and sophomore Luke Giugliano, Colgate senior Christopher Ju and sophomore Troy Kelly, Holy Cross seniors Andrew Boudon and John Cicchitti, Lafayette senior Alex Van Hoof and freshman Steven Young, Lehigh senior Simon Voorhees, sophomore James Clements and freshman Patrick Reilly and Navy juniors Jeremy Jones and Billy Walker, sophomores Chris Evans and Ryan Speir and freshmen Nate Arellano, David Liedtka and Bryson Kasper, giving the Mids nine student-athletes with a 4.00 GPA along with Buffone and Gainey.

    Breaking down Haye vs. Klitschko Last month via a popular social networking site, WBO, IBF, RING and IBO Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko issued a challenge to his WBA counterpart David Haye. The pair were due to fight last year, but Haye pulled out of the fight due to a back injury. Haye would later enter talks with Wladimir’s older brother and holder of the WBC title Vitali, but pulled out or talks to fight the then WBA champion Nikolai Valuev. Haye would go on to earn a close decision against in Nürnberg, Germany. The video message in which he accused Haye of ducking him and his brother, Wladimir thundered “David, you’ve bitched out on fighting both Klitschko brothers twice already and now is the time to make it happen.” He went on to say “On behalf of the boxing fans around the world, I am officially calling you out to fight me, you can’t run away from me forever and you need to follow through with this fight to get respect. I’m ready, what are you waiting for?” Shortly after the video message from Wladimir, Haye confirmed that trainer and manager Adam Booth is set for negotiations with the Brothers, who are based in Germany. Haye revealed “After a meeting on Thursday I will know more, But until then, I’ll leave Adam to it. I’m relaxing and enjoying myself now.” However he did not specify which brother he would face. In his last outing Haye (24-1 22KO’s) stopped the tough American two time WBA title holder John Ruiz in the 9th round.
