Their list of hits, including Golden Brown, were written against a background of spectacular success, dismal failure, drug dependency, financial ruin, infighting and misfortune. As a response to David Buckley's one-sided biography of the band ("No Mercy" Hodder & Stoughton, 1997) and the band’s reticence to reveal the true meaning behind their songs, Hugh Cornwell, founding member and songwriter, sets the record straight, displaces the myths and for the first time explains the real stories behind The Stranglers, his departure and the origins of their songs. • A Sociological Guide to the Beaten Tracks of Backpacking in The
In the Middle of Nowhere? A Sociological Guide to the Beaten Tracks of Backpacking in the Former British Empire by William Flynn A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY In THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (Sociology) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) July 2011 © William Flynn 2011 i Abstract Since the 1970s backpacking travel has become an increasingly popular and desirable pursuit among young people from western countries. Guidebooks such as Lonely Planet sold young people the practical know-how that would allow them to travel ‗off-the-beaten-track‘. The off-the-beaten-track travel experiences of present-day backpackers‘ are one way in which youth lifestyle, geography and identity are consumed and produced away from home and apart from the everyday world. This thesis provides an historical, textual and ethnographic analysis of the practices and discourses which distinguish travel from tourism, and it examines how particular destinations and experiences are considered more challenging, and therefore more valuable, than others. In particular it seeks to answer the question of what makes India such a ‗special place‘ in the world of backpacking as a ‗litmus test‘ for off-the-beaten-track travel. It begins by analyzing the historical precursors and ideological antecedents of the discourses and practices of independent travel and tourism in 19th Europe, with a focus on England and the role played by independent guidebooks in that period. The textual strategies employed in the most popular guidebooks today, those published by Lonely Planet, are then analyzed in connection with the production and consumption of particular backpacking enclaves in Canada, Ireland, and India, where the promise of travel as a self-cultivating, authentic, and valuable activity is realized.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Birkbeck Institutional Research Online Commercial Alternative Joseph Brooker – Slow down / You’re taking me over… 1 – Another victory like that and we are done for.2 By the end of the 1980s, popular culture and media commentary brimmed with a self-conscious desire to name and describe the present. Few decades have had as clear an account of themselves as the 1980s, whatever the gaps and limits of that account. The 1990s became ever more sure of what had happened in the 1980s; but packing the 1990s themselves into a compelling summary proved more difficult. For the time being, those looking for stories of the last decade must make do with tracts like Stephen Bayley’s Labour Camp, a brief, bilious assault on the aesthetics and politics of Blair’s first term. For all his rancour, snobbery and carelessness, Bayley lands a few hits, and leaves a few hints. Bayley reads New Labour in terms not of social and economic policy, but of taste and image: Blair’s choice of car, the efforts at ‘rebranding Britain’, the design of the Dome. The cultural emblem of the Blair years, he proposes, is Elton John: He is a popular phenomenon, therefore it is irrelevant and elitist even to wonder if he is actually any good. He is emphatically middle-of-the-road. He is classless.... After a much-reported past of rock-star excess, he is clean, dried out…. Whoever would have thought you could relaunch old Labour? Whoever would have thought you could relaunch Elton John? The parallels between the two transformations are remarkable.3 The thought is suggestive, but leaves much unsaid about the new terrain inherited and shaped by the Blair government.
