USHMM Finding Ministerstvo národní bezpečnosti (Ministry of National Security) Trial of Rudolf Slánský RG-48.021 United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place SW Washington, DC 20024-2126 Tel. (202) 479-9717 e-mail: [email protected] Descriptive summary Title: Ministerstvo národní bezpečnosti (Ministry of National Security) Trial of Rudolf Slánský Dates: 1952 Accession number: 2016.268.1 Creator: Ministerstvo národní bezpečnosti Extent: 236,241 digital images Repository: United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives, 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place SW, Washington, DC 20024-2126 Languages: Czech English Scope and content of collection Court proceedings, protocols, letters, photographs from the trial of Rudolf Slánský. On 20 November 1952, Rudolf Slánský, General Secretary of the Communist party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ), and 13 other leading party members, 11 of them Jews, were accused of participating in a Trotskyite- Titoite-Zionist conspiracy and convicted: 11 including Slánský were hanged in Prague on December 3, 1952. The state prosecutor at the trial in Prague was Josef Urválek. Among the accused were two Israelis: Mordechai Oren sentenced to 15 years imprisonment and Mordechai Orenstein convicted to life sentence. Accusation of Oren and Orenstein in being agents of American imperialism arouse a wide discussion among the left wing of Mapam party and Kibutz movement which coursed to its split. Those put on trial confessed to all crimes (under duress or after torture) and were sentenced to punishment. Slánský, tried to commit suicide twice in prison. The public humiliation did not end with the victims’ deaths. Their ashes were dumped at a construction site near Prague. When Stalin died in March of 1953, the strict USSR policy of purges weakened. The Slánský Trial victims were cleared of the charges during April of 1963. In May of 1968, they were rehabilitated and exonerated. However, political trials did not come to an end in Communist Czechoslovakia. Many innocent political prisoners were sentenced to death or wound up toiling in labor camps. The Slánský Trial has been the focus of books and a film. Rudolf Slánský’s son, also Rudolf, was a dissident during Communist rule, and when Vaclav Havel became president, he appointed Slánský Czech ambassador to the Soviet Union. The collection also includes investigation records from other postwar trials in Chechoslovakia, including records related to American spies Noel and Herta Field.

Eva Taterova Researcher, Department of Territorial Studies Mendel University in Brno, Czech Republic [email protected] FINAL REPORT: VISEGRAD SCHOLARSHIP AT THE VERA & DONALD BLINKEN OPEN SOCIETY ARCHIVES Project title: Rudolf Slansky’s Trial from the Perspective of Radio Free Europe Research area: The informational environment of the period of the Cold War, East and West Research period: 30/6-31/7/2016 Research description Early 1950s were in the light of the political processes with the real or alleged opponents of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia. The worldwide attention received especially the show trials with Rudolf Slansky, the former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, and fourteen of his co-workers in 1951- 1952 (sometimes known as Prague Process in western media). The political processes in Czechoslovakia were not the first example of the purges in the communist parties in the countries of Eastern Block (e. g. the former ministry of foreign affairs of Hungary Laszlo Rajk was sentenced to death penalty in October 1949; Trajco Kostov, the former General Secretary of Communist Party of Bulgaria, was executed in December 1949). The research conducted in Open Society Archives in Budapest in July 2016 aimed to explore and to analyze the perspective of Radio Free Europe (RFE) on Rudolf Slansky’s trial in Czechoslovakia (November 1951 – November 1952). Two basic research questions were set in order to specify the research area: What information about the processes did RFE have at their disposal? 1 What was the perception of the contemporary situation in Czechoslovakia by RFE? A special attention was dedicated to the cases of two Israeli citizen Mordechai Oren, Shimon Orenstein, and the American reporter William N.

Fourteen Convicted, Three Million Condemned: The Slansky Affair and the Reconstitution of Jewish Identities After the Holocaust By Helaine Debra Blumenthal A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in Charge: Professor John Connelly, Chair Professor John Efron Professor Yuri Slezkine Professor David Frick Spring 2012 Fourteen Convicted, Three Million Condemned: The Slansky Affair and the Reconstitution of Jewish Identities After the Holocaust Copyright © 2012 By Helaine Debra Blumenthal Abstract Fourteen Convicted, Three Million Condemned: The Slansky Affair and the Reconstitution of Jewish Identities After the Holocaust by Helaine Debra Blumenthal Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor John Connelly, Chair In this study, I examine how Jews in the United States, Western Europe, and Israel reacted to the Slansky Affair, the Doctors’ Plot, and the general wave of overt Soviet antisemitism which took shape in late 1952 until Stalin’s death in early March 1953. I explore how the Holocaust, the creation of a Jewish state, and the Cold War affected Jewish conceptions of antisemitism as well as the nature and character of Jewish collective action on both the global and the domestic stage. After investigating the ways in which Jews understood and reacted to the trial culturally, religiously, organizationally, nationally, and politically, I assert that in the early 1950s, Jews were in a process of redefinition. The role of Israel in diasporic Jewish affairs, the relationship between Jews and the Left, the position of Jews in the Cold War, and the nature and character of Jewish central leadership figured prominently in the lives of individual Jews and Jewish communities in the years immediately following the end of the Second World War.

  • Introduction Costa-Gavras and Microhistoriography: the Case of Amen. (2002)
1 Introduction Costa-Gavras and microhistoriography: the case of Amen. (2002) Homer B. Pettey I think the next step for the cinema will be to go to that new kind of fi lm, one which tries to explain the historical situation and all the connections which lead to that kind of history. Costa-Gavras 1 Exactness – accuracy – is impossible, given the time and space in which historical events take place and the time a fi lm has available. But faithfulness to the ethic, to the human meaning, to the social signifi cance of the historical events depicted in a fi lm is absolutely necessary. Costa-Gavras 2 The political dimensions of Costa-Gavras ’ s fi lms constitute the main body of criticism and analysis about this world-renowned auteur and his cinematic agenda. Grounding Costa-Gavras ’ s fi lms within a historical context also opens up the kind of dialogue with history that the director desires. Both approaches remain necessary for uncovering the meaning of his melodramatic narratives of personal, emotional history. Additionally, Costa-Gavras experiments with cinematic forms in order to present new perspectives on historical moments of totalitarian grabs, and methods, for maintaining ideological power. Many of his best-known fi lms rely upon adaptations of actual events, often by reinterpreting romans à clef , such as Vassilikos ’ s retelling of the assassination of the Greek socialist Lambrakis in Z , culling from journalistic accounts, such as in Missing , or Dan Mitrione’ s kidnapping and death by Uruguayan guerrillas in State of Siege , reframing autobiography, such as Artur London ’ s The Confession , or the director ’ s own interpretation of confl icts, as in Hanna K.

  • Rudolf Slansky: His Trials and Trial
COLD WAR INTERNATIONAL HISTORY PROJECT WORKING PAPER #50 Rudolf Slansky: His Trials and Trial By Igor Lukes THE COLD WAR INTERNATIONAL HISTORY PROJECT WORKING PAPER SERIES CHRISTIAN F. OSTERMANN, Series Editor This paper is one of a series of Working Papers published by the Cold War International History Project of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. Established in 1991 by a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Cold War International History Project (CWIHP) disseminates new information and perspectives on the history of the Cold War as it emerges from previously inaccessible sources on “the other side” of the post-World War II superpower rivalry. The project supports the full and prompt release of historical materials by governments on all sides of the Cold War, and seeks to accelerate the process of integrating new sources, materials and perspectives from the former “Communist bloc” with the historiography of the Cold War which has been written over the past few decades largely by Western scholars reliant on Western archival sources. It also seeks to transcend barriers of language, geography, and regional specialization to create new links among scholars interested in Cold War history. Among the activities undertaken by the project to promote this aim are a periodic BULLETIN to disseminate new findings, views, and activities pertaining to Cold War history; a fellowship program for young historians from the former Communist bloc to conduct archival research and study Cold War history in the United States; international scholarly meetings, conferences, and seminars; and publications. The CWIHP Working Paper Series is designed to provide a speedy publications outlet for historians associated with the project who have gained access to newly-available archives and sources and would like to share their results.
