Captions are printed in boldface type, although lines that contain italicized words are not in bold due to the limitations of the computer program.. Diacritics were not used in order to facilitate computer searches,. For the most part, information about the subjects of the photographs follows museum labels. Information about provenance has not been independently verified except in a few cases.. Incorrect iconographic identifications have been changed only in obvious cases. When objects could not be measured, estimates of sizes were sometimes provided by individual photographers.. Conversions for estimates given in inches suggest greater precision than intended by the original estimators. Photographs are organized in the following sequences: For India: By state, alphabetically; within states by districts alphabetically; within districts, by sites alphabetically,. For Bangladesh: By districts alphabetically; within districts by sites alphabetically.. In some cases, alphabetical order was abandoned to accommodate a more sensible arrangement of a particular group of materials.. For, architectural materials, site views occur first, followed by individual monuments. Photographs of buildings and multisided works are arranged in a clockwise pattern. The order for sculptures is as follows: stone, then metal, then other material.. Within each medium, Buddhist materials occur first, then Hindu, and then other materials,. Buddhist objects are arranged as follows: Buddha figures (standing, then seated, each by mudra); Buddhas, crowned (standing, then seated, each by mudra); Bodhisattvas (standing, followed by seated); Female figures (standing, followed by seated); miscellaneous materials. Hindu materials are arranged in the following order: Siva and Saivite, Visnu and Vaisnavite, Surya, other male deities, and female deities.. Jain works of art occur after Hindu objects, followed by miscellaneous materials. Susan L..
