Unfortunately, from time to time such stories about Europe tend to circulate and I understand that a number of people have been in touch with the Commission recently on this matter...... I hope that this information is helpful to you.” That was written more than two months after enforcement (by the Metric Regulations of 1994 in compliance with Directive 80/181/EEC as amended by 89/617/EEC) of the first stage of compulsory metrication, governing the sale of wines and spirits (e.g. millilitres in place of gills) as from 1 January 1995, and barely six months before implementation of the second stage, requiring use of metric units on sale of pre-packed goods as from 1 October that year! Many MPs were likewise in denial; for there had been no public consultation and no mention of the issue in any party‟s general election manifesto. In fact, Ben’s writings were to provide one of the most significant scholarly spinal cords of post-war contemporary British history from Attlee to Blair. The politics of the centre Left were central to both his scholarship, his personal convictions and his renown as a pub- lic intellectual. Yet he was never tainted by dogma or ideology and respect for him and his works straddled the political divides. Very tall, arresting, quietly spoken, courteous, attractive to women and intellectually fastidi- ous, he dominated—but never domineered—his special scholarly patch and, in the 1980s and 1990s, raised the art of political biography to new heights. His early death in 2004, aged 58, left a very considerable gap in both the country’s intellectual and public life. Ben’s formation was thoroughly Fabian. His father, John Pimlott, was an open scholarship boy from a west country grammar school to Oxford at a time when such an event was a rare example of a meritocrat rising.     INTERVIEW Marjorie Wallace, MBE In conversation with Rosalind Ramsay In 1986, award winning investigative journalist Marjorie Wallace wrote a series of articles, "The Forgotten Illness", which brought into sharp focus the terrible plight of people with schizophrenia in Britain. This campaign led to the formation of SANE (Schizophrenic: A National Emergency) in 1986, a charity whose aims are to change attitudes toward mental illness, provide care and initiate research. Since becoming SANE's Chief Executive in 1989, she has recruited a network of key international figures from the fields of medicine, science, business and industry to support the SANE cause. In 1991 Marjorie Wallace set up an appeal to raise £6million for research. SANE succeeded In obtaining that amount and is now in the process of establishing The Prince of Wales International Centre in Oxford for research into schizophrenia and depression. In 1992 she launched SANELINE, the first national telephone helpline for people with mental illness. Her previous experience in television has been put to good use for the cause and her latest documentary, "Circles of Madness", has been highly acclaimed. Marjorie Wallace, MBE 7ou were a journalist before becoming involved in trained by the mercenary "mad Mike" Hoare.
