Gardening with Deer by Karen Linton When HEB had a sale on crepe myrtles for only $10, I bought one to replace a shrub that had died due to drought, not deer. I was amazed when they started nibbling on it! I thought they didn’t like crepe myrtles because I have many in my yard and they don’t bother them. It finally dawned on me that the reason my crepe myrtles are so beautifully trimmed was not because they grew that way naturally—it was because As I sat down to write this article about fall plantings for your garden, I got up three the deer ate all the new growth—and the reason they didn’t bother the rest of them times and chased the deer out of a garden I planted outside the fence, but protected is because they can’t reach them! My other crepe myrtles are over 25 years old and by bird/deer netting. The netting is obviously invisible to the deer and protected as stand really tall. So suffice to say, my new, shorter crepe myrtle is now protected by well as having nothing there! I thought I had a deal with the deer – I feed them a barrier. every day with increasingly high-‐priced corn and they leave my plants alone. I can hear you scoff at the thought that deer could recognize any deal I made, but they are So to get to the topic of this article, which is supposed to be about gardening in our obviously smart enough to tell time as they are outside waiting for me to feed them particular area, stick to the known plants the deer don’t like. They really don’t like at 5 p.m. every day and not one of them has a watch that I’ve found. They also have periwinkles (vinca major) which are annuals, but at least they bloom a lot and like phenomenal hearing as they can hear my garage door going up from three blocks the sun, too. Oleanders are supposedly poisonous and the deer must know it as they away and come running. They are intelligent enough to know that the fence will do not eat them and they grow well in our poor soil and lack of rain once they are keep my dogs from attacking them so they basically say “nanny, nanny boo boo” to established. They don’t like nd salvia a that comes in many colors as well leaf my dogs when they bark at them. So I thought they could keep a simple deal. shapes. They REALLY don’t like salvia greggi that is red but sort of leggy. They don’t like rosemary, but rosemary really doesn’t like the drought conditions we have And they pretty much kept up their end of the deal until the past two years and now had recently. They aren’t supposed to like lantana ; however, they ate my lavender all deals are off. With no rain to speak of, their main source of food is not growing so and white ones. They seem to pass on the yellow ones however. Also, if you are they have started to eat just about anything. I was smart enough to know to plant going to be brave and plant something outside the fence, make it a larger size. If you anything that I know a deer likes inside my four-‐foot chain link fence (and it does go with the really large plants, they seem not to like them so much. Maybe smaller keep them out except once when a deer jumped it and started chomping down on my roses), but I thought that if I planted things they didn’t like outside the fence, the sized plants are more tender. plants would be fine. So I did research and found out what the deer supposedly didn’t like – for the uninformed, deer supposedly don’t like any plant that is fragrant As far as fall plants go, I haven’t tried asters and chrysthanthemum outside the (good or bad odors), plants that have gooey stuff inside like cactus or plants that fence, but they seem to do well in our soil or as my friends call it, our rocks. were bitter tasting (although how they would know they are bitter until they ate them, I don’t know –the intelligence factor again, I guess). So I planted plants that My advice to anyone in OVN who wants to have a nice garden, flower or vegetable, is they supposedly didn’t like-‐-‐-‐for instance, esperanza. That’s the plant with the to make raised beds with garden mix soil trucked in and make sure you have at least tubular yellow flowers that bloom profusely and are perennials so they won’t die a four-‐foot fence around whatever you plant!!! over the winter but come back each year, thereby saving me money and time. My neighbor has a really large esperanza in her front yard and the deer don’t bother it at all. I planted three one-‐gallon esperanzas outside the fence and immediately had to enclose them with netting, as the deer seemed to love them. I’ve told them to go eat hers; after all, they wouldn’t have to work so hard to get to them as hers isn’t protected at all. But hers is thriving and mine are working hard to live after being chowed down on. I also planted aloe – vera outside the fence read, gooey — interior you know, the kind the deer don’t like. They ate my aloe vera almost to the ground. It’s thriving now that I transplanted it inside the fence. I was told deer don’t like blue plumago so I planted five of them, admittedly small ones, but the only one that lived is the one I moved inside the fence. I thought, “Okay, I’ve got you now!” and planted three society garlic. You see that all over—long tall green leaves and purple flowers on a spiky stem. They ate it to the ground. I must admit that they must have Greg Frank not liked it too much as it is growing back and they are leaving it alone. By the way, REALTOR® I tried invisible fence, the smells-‐so-‐bad-‐you-‐gag spray that is supposed to keep deer away. It certainly works on keeping anyone away from you after you spray it, as the wind always seems to blow back some of the spray on me. The deer keep away for a 210-722-4296 couple of days if it doesn’t rain (which, of course, but lately it never does), then they [email protected] go back to grazing. You, however, will have to bathe and wash your clothes before you can be out in polite society.

Three women die together in an accident And go to heaven.

When they get there, St. Peter says, But 'We only have one rule here in heaven: One day St.Peter comes up to her Don't step on the ducks!' With the most handsome man she has ever laid eyes on .... Very tall, long eyelashes, muscular. So they enter heaven, and sure enough, St. Peter chains them together without saying a word. There are ducks all over the place. It is almost impossible not to step on a duck, The happy woman says, And although they try their best to avoid them, 'I wonder what I did to deserve being The first woman accidentally steps on one. Chained to you for all of eternity?'

Along comes St. Peter with the ugliest man she ever saw. The guy says, St. Peter chains them together and says, 'I don't know about you, 'Your punishment for stepping on a duck is to But I stepped on a Spend eternity chained to this man!' Duck. The next day, The second woman steps accidentally on a duck And along comes St. Peter, Who doesn't miss a thing. With him is another extremely ugly man. He chains them together With the same admonishment as for the first woman. The third woman has observed all this and, Not wanting to be chained For all eternity to an ugly man, is very, VERY careful where she steps.

She manages to go months Without stepping on any ducks,

by: Weslea Miller

Once again, Oak Village North has outdone the rest of the county is National Night Out participation! Yay OVN! As co-chair of the NNO committee, I’d like to send out a huge shout of thanks to our NNO hosts Sandy Hancock, Ken Treanor & Gene Wankowski, Karen Linton & Bob Boyd, Chris & Shari Brodeur, Kristi & Greg Perkins, Ronda & Donald Zaiontz, Karin Krause, and Dianna & Brian Burke. Each party was unique in what was being offered for refreshments and amusements, but everyone had a great time at each home. The local elected officials made the rounds to each location, as did all of the area first responders. The little kids had plenty to do at Karin Krause’s on Circle Oak! That’s the place to celebrate NNO if you have little ones. And I do believe that new hosts Donald and Ronda Zaiontz just might have raised the bar just a teeny, tiny little bit in the area of food and libations! National Night Out is such a great opportunity for the neighbors of OVN to get out and socialize and learn more about our community. The idea traditionally has been to go to the NNO location nearest your home, but this time it seems as if folks were feeling a bit more adventurous and actually “crossing over” SV Rd to mix and mingle with neighbors from “the other side” of the neighborhood. all, it was a very successful and fun night. If you didn’t have the opportunity to get out to an NNO gathering this time, go ahead and mark your calendar for next year…it’s always on the first Tuesday in October, so plan on doing it again on October 7th, 2014. Thanks again to our hospitable and generous hosts!
