[generalNote]: Hanes gweinyddol / Braslun bywgraffyddol | Administrative history | Biographical sketch Nodyn | Note Henry Robertson (1816-1888) from Banff, Alberta, Canada, was a civil engineer, ironmaster, coalmaster as well as company director. He was an MA graduate of Aberdeen University. His early interests revolved around mining engineering, but he later devoted himself mainly to railway engineering and construction. He came to Wales in 1842 (at just 26 yeras of age) to restructure and to revitalise the coal and iron concerns of John Wilkinson - the famous Brymbo ironworks. He is credited with reviatlizing the decaying industrial area of Denbighshire. Realizing that, in order to ensure the success of the iron- works and collieries, a railway to this area was essential, he and his friends promoted the North Wales Mineral Railway - the first of a number of measure which Robertson piloted through parliament. He was the Liberal MP for Shrewsbury between 1862 and 1865, and again between 1874 and 1885 and for Merionethshire between 1885 and 1886. He was later to concentrate on railway construction and was responsible for the railway from Chester to Shrewsbury. and other rail links. He also maintained a number of other commercial enterprises. In 1869, he bought the Pale estate, Llandderfel, Merionethshire and he was the founder of the Brymbo steel works in 1884. His nephew John William Dean inherited his money, papers and plans and his son Henry Beyer Robertson the remainder of his estate. Henry Robertson was also one of the trustees of the Wynnstay estates. Further business and estate papers of both Henry Robertson and his son Henry Beyer Robertson are in the Llantysilio Hall Papers in the Denbighshire Record Office. Further papers relating to the Palé estate can be found in the Palé Papers (see NLW, Minor Lists and Summaries, 1993, p. 61) and in the Dolgellau Area Record Office. A number of maps, drawings and sketches were transferred to the former Department of Pictures and Maps (reference = Henry Robertson Collection 1-147).     The Cefn Viaduct Cefn Mawr Viaduct The Chester and Shrewsbury railway runs at the eastern end of the Vale of Llangollen, beyond the parish boundary, passing through Cefn Mawr on route from Chester to Shrewsbury. It is carried over the River Dee by a stupendous viaduct, half a mile down stream from the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. It measures one thousand five hundred and eight feet in length, and stands one hundred and forty-seven feet above the level of the river. The structure is supported by nineteen arches with sixty foot spans. In 1845 rival schemes were put forward for railway lines to join Chester with Shrewsbury. Promoters of the plan to link Shrewsbury to Chester via Ruabon had to work quickly to get their scheme moving. Instructions for the notices and plans were only given on the 7th November and they had to be deposited with the clerk of Peace by the 30th November 1845. Hostility from objecting landowners meant that Robertson had to survey the land by night. One irate squire expressed a wish that someone would 'throw Robertson and his theodolite into the canal'. Henry Robertson told a Parliamentary Committee of the advantage of providing a railway line that would open up coalfields of Ruabon and Wrexham to markets at Chester, Birkenhead and Liverpool in the north and to Shrewsbury and other Shropshire towns on the south side. The Parliamentary Committee agreed with him and the bill received Royal Assent on 30th June 1845. The Shrewsbury and Chester Railway Company made good progress with construction work and the line to Ruabon from the north was opened in November 1846.

    A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened.

Visited April 1953 A two -storeyed house of mortared rubble, 30ft long by 17ft 6” wide. The lintels of all openings are stone slabs; the roof is of modern slates with slab copings. At the NW end is a projecting chimney with large square stack with projecting coping; at the SE end is a modern chimney. There are windows on the ground floor only, except for one small window in the SE gable end. The house has two entrances opposite one another in the side walls. A mill -wheel has been built against the SE end of the NE wall, the wall being broken through to take the axle . The water conduit has gone but the buttress to support it remains against the SE side of the NE doorway; the conduit must have been carried over the top of the doorway and along the NE wall, which accounts for the blocking of the NE window. The ground fl oor was divided by a post -and panel partition which was slotted not into the soffit of a ceiling beam but into a separate top beam which survives in its entirety; the SW half of the partition, with a doorway, survives, each 2 ft wide.

Snowdonia was designated a National Park because of its natural beauty. The Park Authority is responsible for safeguarding and promoting enjoyment and understanding of the Park‟s special qualities. Today, the Park is under increasing pressure. Every year, because of its renown, millions of people come to enjoy Snowdonia‟s coast, hills, rivers, lakes, wildlife and its special cultural heritage.
