While other series have fancy settings, Tokyo Xanadu's events take place against the backdrop of a fictional suburb of modern Tokyo called Morimia City, and contain modern elements such as smartphones and social media. Morimia was based on real places in the city of Tatikawa, where Nihon Falcom has its head office: for example, Morimiya Station Plaza, with its red monument arch and Yumine department store, is very reminiscent of the northern exit of the Tatikawa station, which has a similar look of the blue arch of the monument and a branch of the Lumine department store. Falcom held promotional events at various real locations in the city of Tatikawa that resembled in-game locations, including Tokyo Xanadu themed menus at the Cafe in Orion Books, an actual Japanese bookstore chain also based in the city of Tatikawa, which appears in the game with permission under its own name. The development and release phases of Falcom first announced the game's name on December 17, 2014. The company called the game an urban myth-making rpg. They also stressed that they wanted to create a game with a different feel than their other flagship video game series, Ys and Legend of Heroes/Trails in the Sky series. The game is the latest iteration of Xanadu games, including the 1985 video game Xanadu and the 2005 Xanadu Next video game, although the game is modelled on its predecessors. The game was released in Japan on September 30, 2015. The English version of the game was not announced for almost a year after its initial Japanese release, making the fate of the game in the West at the time uncertain. Journalists viewed him as a likely candidate for the localization of Xseed Games, due to their close relationship with Falcom from translating entries into their Trails and Ys titles. Other journalists took the Xanadu-related trademark leak in January 2015 as a sign that it was being translated by XSeed, although this was actually a reference to Xanadu Next. USGamer described the chances of the localization game as extremely strong. In February 2016, Falcom President Toshihiro Kondo, when asked if third-party companies were interested in releasing the title in English in the West, replied that it was something that we definitely want to make a reality and are currently working on it. Please wait a little bit In June 2016, Falcom announced an extended version of Tokyo Xanadu eX for PlayStation 4. The PS4 version contains improved HD graphics, frame rate, and additional story content in the form of additional side stories and post-game content. This version is scheduled for release on September 8, 2016. In July 2016, Aksys Games announced that they would be translating a version of Vita and publishing it sometime in 2017. They will also create and release PC port games, although they, at the time, had no plans to release an extended version of the PS4. In January 2017, they announced that they would be translating the PS4 version as well, and that the PC port would be eX. The trivia name Tokyo Xanadu comes from the japanese capital called Tokyo, which is the setup game and the word Xanadu means an idealized place of great or idyllic splendor and beauty, which is also a reference to the beautiful sunset after the Tokyo earthquake ten years before the game. The artworks prepared for the game follow the same pattern - placing the characters in the order in which they were introduced/joined the party, so the order is always the same. Developers have always wanted to move on to Tokyo Xanadu's development before. Exploring Cultural Differences in Game Reception: JRPGs in Germany and Japan Stefan Brückner1, Yukiko Sato1, Shuichi Kurabayashi2 and Ikumi Waragai1 Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University1 5322 Endo, Fujisawa, Kanagawa 252-0882 Japan +81-466-49-3404 [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Cygames Research2 16-17 Nanpeidai, Shibuya, Tokyo 150-0036 Japan +81-3-6758-0562 [email protected] ABSTRACT In this paper we present the first results of an ongoing research project, focused on examining the European reception of Japanese video games, and comparing it with the reception in Japan. We hope to contribute towards a better understanding of how players’ perception and evaluation of a game are influenced by their cultural background. Applying a grounded theory approach, we conducted a qualitative content analysis of articles from German video game websites, user comments, written in response to these articles, as well as Japanese and German user reviews from the respective Amazon online stores and Steam. Focusing on the reception of three Japanese RPGs, our findings show that considerable differences exist in how various elements of the games are perceived. We also briefly discuss certain lexical differences in the way players write about games, indicating fundamental differences in how Japanese and German players talk (and think) about games. Keywords Japanese games, reception, Germany, user reviews, QDA, grounded theory INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been a rise in attempts to utilize the vast amounts of text on digital games available online, by using natural language processing (NLP) methods.

The Art of War: Fighting Games, Performativity, and Social Game Play A dissertation presented to the faculty of the Scripps College of Communication of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Todd L. HARPER has been approved for the School of Media Arts and Studies and the Scripps College of Communication by Mia L. Consalvo Associate Professor of Media Arts and Studies Gregory J. Shepherd Dean, Scripps College of Communication ii ABSTRACT HARPER, TODD L., Ph.D., November 2010, Mass Communications The Art of War: Fighting Games, Performativity, and Social Game Play (244 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Mia L. Consalvo This dissertation draws on feminist theory – specifically, performance and performativity – to explore how digital game players construct the game experience and social play. Scholarship in game studies has established the formal aspects of a game as being a combination of its rules and the fiction or narrative that contextualizes those rules. The question remains, how do the ways people play games influence what makes up a game, and how those players understand themselves as players and as social actors through the gaming experience? Taking a qualitative approach, this study explored players of fighting games: competitive games of one-on-one combat. Specifically, it combined observations at the Evolution fighting game tournament in July, 2009 and in-depth interviews with fighting game enthusiasts. In addition, three groups of college students with varying histories and experiences with games were observed playing both competitive and cooperative games together.

  • Towards Accessibility of Games: Mechanical Experience, Competence Profiles and Jutsus
Towards Accessibility of Games: Mechanical Experience, Competence Profiles and Jutsus. Abstract Accessibility of games is a multi-faceted problem, one of which is providing mechanically achievable gameplay to players. Previous work focused on adapting games to the individual through either dynamic difficulty adjustment or providing difficulty modes; thus focusing on their failure to meet a designed task. Instead, we look at it as a design issue; designers need to analyse the challenges they craft to understand why gameplay may be inaccessible to certain audiences. The issue is difficult to even discuss properly, whether by designers, academics or critics, as there is currently no comprehensive framework for that. That is our first contribution. We also propose challenge jutsus – structured representations of challenge descriptions (via competency profiles) and player models. This is a first step towards accessibility issues by better understanding the mechanical profile of various game challenges and what is the source of difficulty for different demographics of players. 1.0 Introduction Different Types of Experience When discussing, critiquing, and designing games, we are often concerned with the “player experience” – but what this means is unsettled as games are meant to be consumed and enjoyed in various ways. Players can experience games mechanically (through gameplay actions), aesthetically (through the visual and audio design), emotionally (through the narrative and characters), socially (through the communities of players), and culturally (through a combination of cultural interpretations and interactions). Each aspect corresponds to different ways that the player engages with the game. We can map the different forms of experience to the Eight Types of Fun (Hunicke, LeBlanc, & Zubek, 2004) (Table 1).

CHRONOTOPE IN WESTERN ROLE-PLAYING VIDEO GAMES: AN INVESTIGATION OF THE GENERATION OF NARRATIVE MEANING THROUGH ITS DIALOGICAL RELATIONSHIP WITH THE HEROIC EPIC AND FANTASY A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Eduardo Barbosa Lima Department of Social Sciences, Media and Communication Brunel University London December 2016 Chronotope in Western Role-Playing Video Games: An investigation of the generation of narrative meaning through its dialogical relationship with the Heroic Epic and Fantasy Eduardo Barbosa Lima (1234263) Abstract The development of the video game industry and the increasing popularity of the medium as a form of entertainment have led to significant developments in the discipline of game studies and a growing awareness of the cultural significance of video games as cultural artefacts. While much work has been done to understand the narrative aspect of games, there are still theoretical gaps on the understanding of how video games generate their narrative experience and how this experience is shaped by the player and the game as artefact. This interdisciplinary study investigates how meaning is created in Western Role Playing Games (WRPGs) video games by analysing the narrative strategies they employ in relation to those commonly used in Heroic Epic and Fantasy narratives. It adopts the Bakhtinian concepts of chronotope and dialogue as the main theoretical tools to examine the creation and integration of narratives in WRPGs with a special focus on the time-space perspective. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Dragon Age Origins were chosen as representatives of the WRPG video game genre while Beowulf and the tale of Sigurd, as it appears in the Poetic Edda and the Volsung Saga, were chosen as representatives of the Heroic Epic poetic tradition.
