Last month’s bumper issue was a result of some very good input by CRAC members and others. I aim for little improvements every month, but the next step may involve a move away from Microsoft Word as the content editor. It seems that 24 pages of text boxes and images gets quite clunky, it can take hours to reformat after changing something near the beginning of the document! All good fun though, and it’s a very satisfying job when it is done. I doubt that we will hit 24 pages every time. The centrefold hasn’t gained any comments but I enjoy doing it. It also adds a couple of extra pages which saves my old fingers a little typing. To have a centrefold the total number of pages must be evenly divisible . by four, which makes it interesting. This is because the printed versions should have the centrefold smack in the middle for it to make sense. If the nearly finished product has (say) 19 pages, the centrefold takes it to 21 so I have to find 3 more pages of content or reduce it to 20. It’s all a learning experience! I aim to keep the content relevant to the club, but it’s not always going to be Microlight/LSA related. -

CURTIS P40N-1 KITTYHAWK A29-448 specifications Length: 10.20m (33 ft 6 in) Height: 3.76m (12ft 33in) Wingspan: 11.42m (37ft 5in) Powerplant: Allison V-1710 V12, 1360hp. Maximum Speed: 609 km/h (378 mph) Range: 1200 km (750 miles) Service Ceiling: 11,630m (38,150 ft) Arnament: 6 x M2 Brownings, 0.50 calibre machine guns Warbirds Adventure Rides Limited P40N-1, ZK-CAG was built by Curtiss at Buffalo, New York in May 1943 with the United States Army Air Corps serial number 42-104730, and allocated under the Lend- Lease Program to the Royal Australian Air Force. It was taken on strength on the 8th of August 1943 at No.2 Air Depot, Richmond (Sydney), Australia and re-numbered A29-448. On the 25th of August, 1943, it was allocated to 75 Squadron based at Turnbull Field, Milne Bay, New Guinea where it saw combat against Japanese forces. With 75 Squadron, A29-448 was allocated the squadron code GA-C. The letters " GA" refer to the Commanding Officer, Squadron Leader Geoff Atherton's initials. On the 1st of May, 1944, A29-448 was allocated to 78 Squadron based at Tadji, New Guinea. It was soon written off later that month as a result of damage sustained in a heavy landing after a total electrical and hydraulic failure. She was towed to the western end of the base and used for spares until the war ended. Recovery & restoration The remains of A29-448 were recovered from Tadji by Charles Darby in 1973. In the 1990's she was rebuilt by Pioneer Aero Restorations in Auckland. -

Later models carried an armament of six .50 calibre (12.5mm) Browning machine guns, which made it an excellent Army support aircraft. It was successfully operated in this role in all theatres throughout World War II, seeing extensive action in North Africa, the Pacific, Italy, Russia, and China-Burma-India. The testing program started in 1954, and the missile was so successful that for the first 100 launches, the engineers learned practically nothing about any potential weaknesses of the Firestreak. (Later testing revealed an accuracy rating of about 85% when fired within the proper parameters, still a remarkable total.) The Firestreak had been largely replaced by later missiles by 2003, though the few countries still using the Lightning (mostly Saudi Arabia and Kuwait) still had some Firestreaks on hand. The Red Top was to overcome the narrow angle of acquisition of the Firestreak, as well as to rarrange the components of the Firestreak in a more logical and efficient pattern. Increases in technology allowed a better seeker head and the change in design as well as explosives technology allowed a more lethal warhead. However, by 2003, the Red Top has the same status as the Firestreak; largely in storage except for those countries still using the Lightning. -

WOOMERA.DOC Lecture to the .Hornsby Radio Club ROCKET AND BOMB TESTING Tonight I am going to talk about the Woomera rocket range, in South Australia, as it existed in the late 1950s and early 60s, and show a few slides of that period. And, all things being equal, I shall conclude with my experiences in testing the fusing system of an atomic bomb. Now to business. During World War II German military science reached for the stars and nearly grasped them. It achieved what the allies believed to be impossible - a long-range rocket which pushed 1 ton of high explosive 90 kilometres up to land 320 kilometres or so away. It was 1500 mm in diameter and weighed just on 13 tonnes. The flight took 5 minutes from firing to impact and against such a weapon there was no defence. This was the V2 rocket or the second Vengeance Weapon. (The first, the V1, was the flying bomb or Doodlebug as it was nicknamed..) Now, although Hitler had plans to build 30,000 V2s only 3,000 got to be fired against London, Antwerp and Brussels before the launch sites were overrun by the Allied armies. All the same, it was a close-run thing. But there is a counterpoint to this tale. The Allies achieved what the Germans did not believe was necessary the atomic bomb. In 1941 Germany had considered all the implications of building an atomic bomb and concluded that, on balance, the war could be waged and won with existing technology. The received wisdom in Germany was that there was no point in proceeding with something which would tax their technical resources to the utmost and which might not work in the long run.
