Abstract: Writing about heritage values is tricky business where Aboriginal cultural heritage is concerned. How might Aboriginal worldviews, cosmologies and epistemologies be incorporated into a discussion and assessment of heritage values that have been defined and codified according to standards originating from the need to protect mostly European built heritage? In this paper, Sarah Yu revisits her cultural heritage work with the Yawuru native title holders of the area of country in and around Broome, Western Australia, to consider and challenge static notions of heritage (for example, as articulated in the Burra Charter) that relegate heritage into artificial dichotomies such as natural/cultural, or tangible /intangible, or scientific/Aboriginal. Her approach is developed from Yawuru perspectives and worldviews that are holistic, founded in the Bugarrigarra (the Dreaming) and which acknowledge the traditional knowledge, rights and cultural responsibilities that people have in relation to looking after their country as a whole, rather than as separated values, as well as shared transcultural values that have emerged from the colonial history of the region. Yu draws from her recent heritage work in cultural management planning (Yawuru Cultural Management Plan) as well as the curation of a heritage trail (Jetty to Jetty Trail) and an exhibition about pearling in Australia (Lustre: Pearling & Australia). -

Aboriginality, Reconciliation, Urban perspectives By Liza-Mare Syron Introduction Ephemera is a performance primarily inspired by two diverse propositions put forward by leading academics on Australian Aboriginal performance. I was interested in exploring the ideas and theories by writers on Contemporary Indigenous Theatre and in creating the possibility for the practical application of these theories in performance. To explore these ideas theatrically I have utilised information gathered from a number of theatre practitioners, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, on key elements of Aboriginal theatre production. Ephemera is a theatrical exploration of two key theories on Aboriginality in performance that will be produced using key elements of Aboriginal theatre. -

Introduction There’s nothing I would rather be Than to be an Aborigine and watch you take my precious land away. (Chi) In Broome, Western Australia (WA), 5 July 2011 is now known as Black Tuesday. At dawn on that day I found myself standing on the red dust of Manari Road amongst some 250 Broome locals, singing songs from Jimmy Chi’s musical Bran Nue Dae in the face of 100 gathering riot police. As a white, southern academic, with research expertise in social and labour movements and community campaigns,1 I had already spent two months in Broome in April and May 2011 researching community opposition to the proposed gas hub at James Price Point. My interest in this particular issue grew from my love of the Kimberley region, which I have visited as a tourist on camping holidays since 1998. The community blockade of the proposed development site commenced two days after my departure. Despite following events via social media, emails and conversations with community members I felt disconnected from the lived experiences. -

Milliya Rumara: Reflections and Homage, 30 Years On Peter Botsman March 2020 1 For Kevin Fong, the one true Mayor of Broome and Ronnie Rowe and Anne St and all the “unacceptable coons” 2 I “This is a story of how someone found his uncle and a whole lot besides.” (Bibby 1991) “Bran Nue Dae” is kriol, pidgin spelling. There were so many different nationalities aboard the pearling luggers of late nineteenth and twentieth century Broome that a dialect had to emerge. Not only did a dialect emerge but so too did a unique cultural creativity that was busting at the seams to talk about justice, life and freedom. That is what is at the heart of Bran Neu Dae, perhaps Australia’s greatest musical ever written to date.i (Wyllie Johnston and Wyllie Johnston 2019) What must have Jimmy Chi been thinking when those words first came into his head? Did he spit them out in heavy Broome accent to his musical collaborators Michael Manolis, Stephen Pigram, Stephen “Baamba” Albert and the other members of the Kuckles band? What was driving his thoughts? An aboriginal, asiatic jumble of feelings, wading through a segregated hypocrisy, not fitting in, not wanting to fit in, seeking something better, not wanting to be disappointed once again: “Here I live in this tin shack Nothing here worth coming back To drunken fights and awful sights People drunk most every night On the way to a Bran Nue Dae Every body Every body say On the way to a Bran Nue Dae”ii These are far from optimistic or hopeful words.
