Duke University – Talent Identification Program Various Subjects

The Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving academically gifted and talented youth. As a world leader in gifted and talented education, Duke TIP works with students, their families, and educators to identify, recognize, challenge, engage, and help students reach their highest potential. Children with advanced intellectual and academic abilities continually perplex and challenge educators and parents, and schools may not have the resources and staff to adequately provide for the academic challenges, and social and emotional support that gifted children require. Duke TIP is committed to serving this unique group of students by providing services and programs beyond what is offered in the classroom to meet the individual needs of gifted children. For a variety of reasons, many gifted children simply do not reach their full potential. Exceptionally bright students often go unrecognized because they hide their talents, underachieve, or exhibit behavioral problems. In addition, a disproportionately large number of minority students, youngsters from families where English is not the primary spoken language in the home and children from less

5 affluent families are at risk for not being identified as gifted. We also offer summer programs for gifted th th students in grades 4 – 12 . www.tip.duke.edu

15 ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

Abbey Road Language Learning/ Cultural Immersion

Language and cultural instruction is not just our profession. Our teaching method is founded on active, experiential learning in a non-traditional educational environment. Our French, Spanish and Italian courses, among other academic subjects, are designed to be both educational and fun, emphasizing student motivation and interaction, as well as a diversity of teaching methods and educational media. The Abbey Road Experiential Learning Method incorporates aspects of the communicative approach into its methodology while promoting language learning, use and interaction in real, non-simulated situations. We believe in hands-on language learning and therefore spend most of the time outside of the classroom where students converse with locals and participate in authentic, activity-based situations that not only enhance their Spanish, French, Italian and other language skills, but also encourage cultural immersion within the host community. Action Quest Various Locations Adventure Programs

The AQ experience is centered on small, co-ed, age appropriate groups of 8 to 20 teenagers. This encourages close friendships to form while fostering a unique, hands-on experience. Beyond the fun, living and learning aboard a yacht offers a perfect environment to develop leadership and communication skills, as there is nothing contrived about teamwork when working together as part of a tight-knit crew. Our programs have always been grounded in experiential education. Students have a greater feeling of accomplishment from having completed things themselves. In addition, their self-reliance and confidence soar from achieving new skills and certifications. For those students who really want to get away, global programs are offered in the tropical South Seas, Tahiti and Polynesia, and the Galapagos Islands, sailing off to coastal towns and islands in the Mediterranean, and in Australia, sailing and diving the Great Barrier Reef.
