UoRElf70RD In the development of real sportsznan:>hip, the training of clever, gentlemanly athletes and the furnishing of clean, healthful rec­ reation fer the country's youth, the game of Tennis has played an important part. T'he Southern Association, in co-operation "vVith the U.S. L. T. A., can glean some fe~ling of good work done, in considering its part in pro­ meting the game and the amateur spirit. 5 0 l..! T II E R N T E N N I 5 A 55 0 C I A T l 0 N 5 '1'he UtJited States' Oldest 1'etJtJis C!ttb Organized way back in 1876, a year before the famous Longwood in Boston and the Seabright of New Jersey, the New Orleans La\-'/n 'Tennis Club lays fair claim to the distinction of being the oldest tennis club in tht.! United States. The names of the original twenty founders repeat themselves in succeeding generations and were a large factor in the development of Southern tcm~is. Englishmen over here to learn the cotton business were brgely responsible for developing an interest in the game. Grass courts were used in the early days and one Thomas, a colored gentleman, was employed in I88z to care for the courts at the munificent salary of $Io.oo per month, cash. In 1887, \~.:ith larger grounds to care for, Geo. Giles drew $20.00 per month. Play­ ing on Sunday was barred. Dues in 1883 mounted to $15.00 for the year. The club in those days furni~hed balls, racquets, and nets and the scoring was different. Players put up their own nets and were responsible for carefully stowing away all equipment when play was concl udcd. Numbers 6 and 7 of the ciub rules rc;ld as follows: (6) "First on thr. ~rounds to ha\C choice of nets.'' (7) "On Tuesday one court can be retained for a match g:1me, to cbnsist of two out of three rubber!i, the lattc:-r to be of four out of seven games!' ffcaded by Messrs. Gustaf Westfield, Stodd:url, P.M. Westfield, Barnes and ScquiP.., the club was incorporated in I 890. In 1896 there were IO courts, all grass. In the nineties, the names of the Englishmen icarning the cotton business m New Orleans were found in the list of prominent players. In I 900 the dub became a meJ:t­ ber of the United StJtcs Lawn Tennis A~sociation. In 1901 the Gulf St.:ltes Tournament was inaugurated and Mr. Ruben Ifunt of California, later Southern Champion and father of the present brilliant Junior Joe Hunt of California, was the first Gulf States Champion. In 1 89i, afternoon tc:t was a feature of the ~ocial life of the club. In more recent years, Presidents R. E. Craig and Arthur \Vatr.!rs and Messrs. Dan Murray, Jr., J. Henry Bruns, Esmond Phelps and J.
