Tief unten schäumt das Meer, vereinzelte Felsen ragen aus dem men- schenleeren Strand heraus, und Möwen ziehen darüber ihre Kreise. Die Klippen zerteilen die Welt, auf der einen Seite liegt die Weite der See, auf der anderen das saftig grüne Land, dessen sanfte Hügel die Wellen des Meeres widerzu- spiegeln scheinen. Darüber liegt Stille, heckengesäumte Weiden ziehen sich über die Hänge bis zum Horizont, und die Sonne taucht die Szenerie in gleißendes Licht. Wir sind in Cornwall. Eine fast mediterrane Vegetation und seine eigen- willige Kultur unterscheiden Cornwall vom restlichen Großbritannien. Denn es ist zum einen klimatisch begüns- tigt, zum anderen bis auf ganze sechs Kilometer auf allen Seiten von Wasser umgeben. So entwickelten sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte die ganz besonderen Eigenheiten dieser Grafschaft. In dieser herrlichen, stillen Landschaft begegnet man plötzlich geheimnisvollen Zeugen der Vorzeit. Megalithen und mystische Steinkreise erinnern an die Frühzeit der Menschen in Cornwall. Doch das Land ist auch von seinen keltischen Wurzeln geprägt. Alte Geschichten wie die Artussage sind hier allgegenwärtig, keltische Traditionen und sogar eine eigene Sprache sind der Stolz der hier hei- mischen Menschen. The main settlement of the area is Looe. Downderry Heritage The Rame Peninsula is the site of an important cluster of post-medieval fortifications including a group of scheduled monuments. There is also an Iron Age settlement at Rame and there are medieval field strips close to Tregantle fort. A group of Bronze Age barrows are situated close to the cliff east of Downderry, with other historic and archaeologically valuable sites and scattered archaeological remains between Polperro and Polruan.

    Just a Balloon BALLOON DEBRIS ON CORNISH BEACHES Cornish Plastic Pollution Coalition | January 2017 BACKGROUND This report has been compiled by the Cornish Plastic Pollution Coalition (CPPC), a sub-group of the Your Shore Network (set up and supported by Cornwall Wildlife Trust). The aim of the evidence presented here is to assist Cornwall Council’s Environment Service with the pursuit of a Public Spaces Protection Order preventing Balloon and Chinese Lantern releases in the Duchy. METHODOLOGY During the time period July to December 2016, evidence relating to balloon debris found on Cornish beaches was collected by the CPPC. This evidence came directly to the CPPC from members (voluntary groups and individuals) who took part in beach-cleans or litter-picks, and was accepted in a variety of formats:- − Physical balloon debris (latex, mylar, cords & strings, plastic ends/sticks) − Photographs − Numerical data − E mails − Phone calls/text messages − Social media posts & direct messages Each piece of separate balloon debris was logged, but no ‘double-counting’ took place i.e. if a balloon was found still attached to its cord, or plastic end, it was recorded as a single piece of debris. PAGE 1 RESULTS During the six month reporting period balloon debris was found and recorded during beach cleans at 39 locations across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly shown here:- Cornwall has an extensive network of volunteer beach cleaners and beach cleaning groups. Many of these are active on a weekly or even daily basis, and so some of the locations were cleaned on more than one occasion during the period, whilst others only once.

    Coherence Markers: Conjunctive Personal Pronouns in Middle Welsh Elena Parina Welsh has a complicated personal pronoun system, which has been classified by scholars in a number of different ways. For example, D. Simon Evans in his Middle Welsh Grammar (1964, 49-58) makes the following classification, which is presented here in a slightly more formalized way: 1. Independent pronouns 1.1. simple: mi, ti, ef… 1.2. reduplicated: miui, tidi, efo… 1.3. conjunctive: minheu, titheu, ynteu… 2. Dependent pronouns 2.1. possessive pronouns 2.1.1. unstressed possessive pronouns (with further subdivisions) 2.1.2. stressed possessive pronouns: meu, teu, eidaw… 2.2. infixed pronoun object:’m, ’th, ’y… 2.3. affixed pronouns 2.3.1. simple: ui, di, ef… 2.3.2. conjunctive: inneu, ditheu, ynteu… (For a different classification see, for example, Watkins 1977, 146-165). A number of theoretical arguments leads us to suggest that it is most reasonable to distinguish between clitics and independent pronouns, the first class being divided into three sub-classes, i.e. possessive and object proclitics and auxiliary postclitics.     A WELSH CLASSICAL DICTIONARY DACHUN, saint of Bodmin. See s.n. Credan. He has been wrongly identified with an Irish saint Dagan in LBS II.281, 285. G.H.Doble seems to have been misled in the same way (The Saints of Cornwall, IV. 156). DAGAN or DANOG, abbot of Llancarfan. He appears as Danoc in one of the ‘Llancarfan Charters’ appended to the Life of St.Cadog (§62 in VSB p.130). Here he is a clerical witness with Sulien (presumably abbot) and king Morgan [ab Athrwys]. He appears as abbot of Llancarfan in five charters in the Book of Llandaf, where he is called Danoc abbas Carbani Uallis (BLD 179c), and Dagan(us) abbas Carbani Uallis (BLD 158, 175, 186b, 195). In these five charters he is contemporary with bishop Berthwyn and Ithel ap Morgan, king of Glywysing. He succeeded Sulien as abbot and was succeeded by Paul. See Trans.Cym., 1948 pp.291-2, (but ignore the dates), and compare Wendy Davies, LlCh p.55 where Danog and Dagan are distinguished. Wendy Davies dates the BLD charters c.A.D.722 to 740 (ibid., pp.102 - 114). DALLDAF ail CUNIN COF. (Legendary). He is included in the tale of ‘Culhwch and Olwen’ as one of the warriors of Arthur's Court: Dalldaf eil Kimin Cof (WM 460, RM 106). It is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted primarily between January 2007 and April 2008, with central participant-observation settings in primary-level state schools and in the teaching-spaces and hallways of a university. Its primary finding is an account of the gap between the national visibility and the cultural (in)visibility communities of speakers of the indigenous language of Wales (Cymraeg, or “Welsh”). With one exception, no public discourse has yet emerged in Wales that provides an explicit framework or vocabulary for describing the cultural community that is anchored in Cymraeg. One has to live those meanings even to know about them. The range of social categories for living those meanings tends to be constructed in ordinary conversations as some form of nationalism, whether political, cultural, or language nationalism. Further, the negatively valenced category of nationalism current in English-speaking Britain is in tension with the positively valenced category of nationalism current among many who move within Cymraeg- speaking communities. Thus, the very politics of identity are themselves political since the line between what is political and what is not, is itself subject to controversy.

    U.S. Lighthouse Society ~ Lighthouses of the United Kingdom Pendeen Lighthouse (Pendeen , St Just in Penwith, Cornwall) History For nearly 100 years Pendeen Lighthouse has been guiding passing vessels and warning of the dangerous waters around Pendeen Watch. From Cape Cornwall the coast runs NE by E towards the Wra, or Three Stone Oar, off Pendeen. From here the inhospitable shore continues for a further eight miles or so to the Western entrance of St. Ives Bay, the principal feature here being the Gurnards Head, on which many ships have come to grief. Until 1891 maritime safety off Pendeen depended more on activity after a wreck rather than effective prevention, the ʺAdmiralty Sailing Directionsʺ for that year being only able to report a ʺCoastguard Station where a rocket apparatus is keptʺ. The high cliffs along this sector of coastline prevented passing vessels from catching sight of either Trevose Head to the East or the Longships to the West; and so numbers of them, unable to ascertain their position, were lost, particularly on the groups of A NON-PROFIT HISTORICAL & EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY U.S. Lighthouse Society ~ Lighthouses of the United Kingdom sunken and exposed rocks near Pendeen Watch. Trinity House became increasingly concerned about this state of affairs as the nineteenth century drew to its close, and decided to erect a lighthouse and fog signal at Pendeen. Designs for the building were prepared by Sir Thomas Matthews, the Trinity House Engineer, their construction being undertaken by Arthur Carkeek, of Redruth, with Messrs. Chance, of Birmingham supplying the lantern. The buildings occupy a large area and before work could begin the cap of the Point had to be removed and the whole headland flattened, which necessitated the building of a huge retaining wall on the seaward side.
