North London Brass Director Martyn Stogden BA (Hons) Music & Lit North London Brass (NLB) is a network of traditional British brass bands and our own Brass & Woodwind Learners’ Academy. Formed in 2010, NLB has now grown to a strong network of local bands and an Academy, working with scores of brass and woodwind players in the London area.

We’ve played on BBC and ITV television, taken part in experimental arts projects and played prestigious London venues including The Royal Hospital Chelsea, Westminster Abbey, outside The Saatchi Gallery, RAF Hendon Air Museum and Wesley’s Chapel, but we’ve also been working hard to support local and national charities through concerts at churches and schools in our areas. NLB is run on a professional basis, which for us means that we seek out the best professional musicians to lead our projects, provide excellent facilities and an extensive library in exchange for a modest, regular membership fee. This entitles players to attend one, several or all of our NLB regular weekly rehearsals including our symphony orchestra, choir, ENJO Jazz Projects, concerts and, if selected, our NLB Contest Band.

We’re proud of our high quality coaching support and or our family spirit where everyone is encouraged to reach their full musical potential.

NLB Enfield & Edmonton Brass Band, a traditional British brass band, rehearses on Wednesday evenings at Lancaster Road URC, Lancaster Road, Enfield EN2. Our Enfield Conductor is Iain McDonald.

Iain McDonald, Conductor, North London Brass

Iain grew up in the Instrumental Service of Perthshire, Scotland. Iain then moved to Glasgow, where he graduated with Honours from the University of Strathclyde with a degree specialising in Music Performance, Composition and Music History.

Over the past few years, Iain has worked with a number of notable names within the Brass Band and Wind Band communities. The most notable being the Co-Operative Funeralcare Brass Band, Scotland’s most successful brass band and in doing so, has worked with a number of notable characters in the brass band world including Steven Mead and Michael Fowles. As well as this, Iain has done substantial work with the West of Scotland Schools Orchestra Trust, which features two of Europe’s leading youth Ensembles and has worked on projects with both the BBC and Channel 4.

Since moving to London, Iain has continued to work with notable names in the brass band world, including the Aveley and Newham band and in the autumn took up the position of Conductor with North London Brass.”

SCARSDALE HIGH SCHOOL WIND ENSEMBLE 19 OTHER INFORMATION

Enfield Youth Wind Band Enfield Youth Wind Band (EYWB) was formed in the early 1980’s to provide an outlet for musically talented young musicians either living in or attending schools within the London Borough of Enfield. This purpose is still being achieved today with players currently drawn from nine secondary schools across the London Borough of Enfield and some non LBE secondary schools. Over the years EYWB has performed in many local as well as international venues including Scotland, Belgium, Finland, Spain, France, Ireland, Germany, Italy and The Netherlands.

EYWB has also enjoyed success in Regional competitions, resulting in performances at several of London’s leading concert halls, including the Barbican Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. On 18th March 2013 EYWB will perform in the Royal Festival Hall as part of the Youth Makes Music concert organised by the Rotary Club.

Lance Kelly Since leaving Trinity College of Music, London in 1986 Lance has developed a career as a trumpeter, brass teacher and conductor. As a performer he has toured much of the world with various ensembles, most notably the ‘Loose Tubes Big Band’; played with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; appeared in concert with such artists as Elaine Paige, Shirley Bassey and Neil Diamond, and appeared in many West End Theatre productions, most recently ‘Sister Act’, ‘Oliver’ and ‘Legally Blonde’.

Töölö Brass Töölö Brass, established 1980, is a traditional British style brass band of 32 brass instruments. Töölö Brass actively promotes the traditional brass band culture in Finland, and is the most well-known and valued brass band in the country.

Phenomenal shows in celebrations and concerts Töölö Brass is a high profile and experienced performer. The band has participated in many domestic and international brass band competitions - we were positioned in first place in the 2006 Finnish Brass Band Mastership, and in the 2001 Brass Band European Mastership our position was second in the semi- professional category. Töölö Brass arranges and performs concerts for various occasions. For instance, we produced a radio concert for the European Broadcasting Union in late 2006 in cooperation with the Finnish broadcasting company YLE. The concert was held at Church in Helsinki and it was broadcasted live to 23 European countries.

Harjanne The band released an album, “Harjanne”, in September 2008. The album comprises of modern brass band music featuring prominent composers such as Phillip Sparke, Jun Nagao and Kirmo Lintinen. Solo is performed by the world famous classical trumpet legend Jouko Harjanne. His virtuosic solos accompanied with the sound of the leading Finnish brass band will offer you a spectacular brass experience.

This album is considered as a unique collection of new and traditional brass band music - even an international perspective. Some of the traditional songs such as Gordon Langford’s “Rhapsody for Cornet and Brass Band or Phillip Sparke’s “Concerto for Trumpet or Cornet and Brass Band” are very rarely recorded. The songs, by Kirmo Lintinen and Jun Nagao, are specifically composed for this album, and bring fresh and welcome flavours to the musical offering of brass bands. These works can be ordered via Töölö Brass.

Our tradition and references Our vast repertoire consists of both modern day and classical music. Our program is flexible and it includes concert music, evergreen musical melodies, famous theme songs and even modern pop music classics. Brass music friends and our fans know that whatever we do - we do it with a great passion and with an impressive virtuosic touch. We are devoted to provide our audience with a top level, unique and unforgettable performance! We perform frequently in high profile events, seminars and other celebrations both in Finland and internationally. Our recent major performances include:

- Helsinki International Horse Show (over 8.000 spectators) - Hamina Tattoo - the international military music event - Lieksa Brass Week.

SCARSDALE HIGH SCHOOL WIND ENSEMBLE 21 OTHER INFORMATION

Helsinki Brass Quartet Helsinki Brass Quintet is an ensemble aiming at adapting to every situation. During the past several years most of the concerts have been played by five players, but the band is the same even if there are only two members on the stage or if there is a tight drum beat with brass players.

On summer 1999 friends Jukka-Pekka Peltoniemi, Tommi Hyytinen and Sami Ruusuvuori did not want to just listen to brass music but wanted a band of their own. They asked the most talented trumpet playing student of medicine in Finland, Ilkka Helanterä, to join them. When they got Miika Jämsä to play tuba, the new energetic brass quintet was born.

On autumn 2003 Janne Ovaskainen joined the quintet as trumpetist. Now all players have settled down in the metropolitan area, which made more active performing possible. The band also introduced a new name: Helsinki Brass Quintet. To make sure that the group is able to adapt to subscribers’ desires, drum player Mikael Seire supports the band when needed.

Over the years HBQ has performed as a soloist of different orchestras, played concerts in Finland and abroad, composed its own music theater performance and worked with multiple different top artists. Most of the repertoire is either composed or arranged by band itself, which has created HBQ a personal tone.
