The Shuffle, now in its tenth season, is put on every second Friday by a large group of businesses centered on the 200 and 300 blocks of Basilio Badillo, in the heart of the Romantic Zone. The party goes from 6 to 10 p.m., and is an event that both locals and visitors look forward to with great anticipation. The participating businesses (art galleries, shops, restaurants, clubs and theaters) all serve complimentary beverages. Whether you want to meet our local artists, or do some serious shopping, or listen to some great music, or just walk around Vallarta’s favorite neighborhood soaking up the festive atmosphere, the Shuffle is a wonderful way to spend your Friday night. Vallarta Streets. In fact, the organizers have made sure that this experience is a “compact” one. Galeria Pacifico’s long term representation of the outstanding paintings and sculptures of Brewster Brockmann will evolve with an inauguration of his newest work during a 6 to 10 p.m. cocktail reception attended by the artist during the weekly Art Walk on Wednesday, February 26. Brewster grew up in a family of artists in Guadalajara, but has lived in the Vallarta area for many years since receiving a Master’s degree and being a teaching assistant at the prestigious Cranbrook Art Institute near Detroit. During that period, Brockmann also won a six-month fellowship in the Kohler Corporation’s Art in Industry program where he made sculptures in cast iron, two of which were acquired for the collection of Kohler’s Museum of Art. Brewster’s long-term interest in tribal art and artifacts in Mexico and throughout the world can be seen as elements in much of his art, as is also the case with animals from this area and throughout Mexico, as well as from Africa. In fact. this year’s exhibit was proceeded shortly before by a trip to collect ceremonial masks in the nation of Burkina Faso, which had been inspired by a similar trip to the neighboring African nation of Mali during the previous year. During the year before that, Brewster’s trip to Paris for the world’s largest festival of tribal art gave him a great overview of pieces from around the world and also provided an opportunity to visit many contemporary museums, the Picasso Museum being especially influential. Brockmann’s paintings come in all sizes, from 8x10 inches to 6x8 feet, and his clay and cast bronze sculptures from six inches to six feet. His collectors include the famous Mexican artist Alejandro Colunga, Karen Lauder (Estee Lauder,) and John and Ann Marion, who founded the Georgia O’Keefe Museum in Santa Fe, NM, as well as the contemporary art space, Site Santa Fe.
