Student letter code: Q Course year project completed (sophomore or junior): Junior Studio Professor for project: Barbara Weinreich Project title: Courtyard Project description: This residential project is a duplex apartment for a multi-generational Mexican American family (a couple, their child and a grandparent) within an apartment complex located in Downtown Brooklyn, New York City. The design integrates each family member’s personal behaviors and habits along with the family’s cultural background and tastes. The project uses the traditional Mexican courtyard house and the architecture of Luis Barragan as inspiration. The design aims to enhance the relationships between family members by both rening boundaries and emphasizing shared family spaces through the use of walls as an organizing interior element. Walls not only dene spaces, but also contain circulation and act as armature for the family’s treasured vase collection. -

The RAAC Reporter “Building and Strengthening Our Community Through the Arts” Vol. 1 Issue 4 September 2020 See It At The Smithsonian, or See It In Rosemount In the northwest Mexican state of Chihuahua, there is an archeological ruin from ancient culture which had peaked in the 1400s, Casas Grandes. In the1960s, a very poor farmer, Juan Quezada Celado, noticed shards of pottery on the ground as he collected firewood in the area. Drawn to the pottery, Juan Quezada began experimenting with methods that would produce the same kind of pottery. Completely self-taught, he perfected the methodology and began making and selling pottery locally. The pottery became known as Mata Ortiz Pottery, named after a poor local town. As the pottery was discovered by outsiders, Juan Quesada Meet the Board began marketing in small towns and tourist trading posts in Arizona and New (Each month we’ll introduce someone on Mexico. Along with the popular revival of traditional Southwest pottery, Mata our Board) Ortiz Pottery became very well known, and today the finest pieces can sell for over $2,500. Juan Quesada taught a number of local artists in his methodology, giving rise to an economic engine for the poor town of Mata Ortiz, and lifting its people out of poverty. RAAC is grateful to LaDonna Boyd of Rosemount for donating a collection of this pottery. Pieces of Mata Ortiz Pottery have become part of the permanent collection of The Smithsonian Institute as well as other well-known museums. RAAC will be hosting an exhibit of our new collection in 2021 (exact date unknown due to the pandemic.) Northern Nashville Country Music Club October 2013 Newsletter Seems to be a regular occurrence these days bands cancelling doesn’t happen for ages then it’s one after the other, our September show as you know was supposed to be The Outlaws supported by Ellis County. Two weeks ago we got a phone call to tell us that The Outlaws were unable to make their bookings in Scotland due to illness and at very short notice the Murphy’s stepped in to cover their dates. I knew the Murphy’s were made up of three young girls and their dad but didn’t really know anything very much about them so along with everyone else went along on Friday night not knowing what to expect. The show was opened by Ellis County last time they played for us was in January 2012 when Willie Mac was accompanied by Dan from America on guitar, well Willie was here but with him this time was Brian Hughes who on his last visit to the club was fronting the great band Brian Hughes and the Lonesharks (hope you are following –it’s a bit complicated) Like last time Ellis County went down well with the members apart from throwing in a couple of Irish numbers they stuck to pure country music covering old standards but also some up to date material both guys have good country voices and knew what would go down well with the members keeping them dancing. Brian is finding playing as part of a duo a bit different however he still plays all the major festivals along with his band but he was just so disillusioned with the way the clubs were going in the south that he felt it was no longer feasible for him to keep the band on the road, the clubs were only interested in line dancing country music just didn’t come into it. -

Lorrie Morgan, the first woman in her genre to begin her career with three consecutive Platinum albums, re-emerges on Shanachie Entertainment with Letting Go….Slow. It is a collection that showcases a rainbow of emotions, from darkest heartache to bright, shiny humor. “Where I am in my life right now, I’m not afraid to express what I feel, or what I don’t feel,” she comments about the collection’s varied moods. “I’m not afraid to express my views on anything, especially on being a woman. “I have been a daughter, a bride, a mother, a divorcee, a widow, a single mother, a breadwinner and, ultimately, a survivor. In many ways, I am a living, breathing country song, and I know what I sing. “I didn’t want this to be just another album. I wanted it to be something that really moved me. When I listened to songs for it, I’d think, ‘No, not that one. I’m not going to be able to sing that one, because I’m not going to be able to feel it.’ It was very important to me for this album to reflect the things that I am feeling today.” Morgan has long been the envy of her peers for her lustrous vocal phrasing and the down-to-earth believability of her torchy performances. On records such as “A Picture of Me Without You” and “I Guess You Had to Be There,” she ached with pain. -

Hosted by veteran drag performer RuPaul, Drag Race features drag queen entertainers vying for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar.” Since premiering in 2009, the show has become a queer cultural phenomenon that successfully commodifies and markets Camp and drag performance to television audiences at heretofore unprecedented levels. Over its nine seasons, the show has provided more than 100 drag queen artists with a platform to showcase their talents, and the Drag Race franchise has expanded to include multiple television series and interactive live events. The RuPaul’s Drag Race phenomenon provides researchers with invaluable opportunities not only to consider the function of drag in the 21st Century, but also to explore the cultural and economic ramifications of this reality television franchise. -
