We are hoping to perhaps resume the fish fries once Lent starts. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Grayson Bourke, Community Engagement Coordinator for the East Bluff Community Center, and as part of his graduate internship through ISU, is conducting a neighborhood assessment (a three question survey) in the East Bluff. The purpose of the assessment is to give the EBCC a better understanding of resident needs and to attract community partners to help fill those needs. He was wondering if members of the St. Bernard's congregation would be willing to volunteer their time to knocking on doors and conducting this survey in the coming weeks, as he would need volunteer assistance. A day later, in another 5-4 ruling, the high court ruled that states cannot bar tax-credit from funding scholarships that would allow children to attend religiously- affiliated schools. On June 29, the court ruled in June Chief Justice John Medical Services v. Roberts Russo that the Louisiana law was “similar to, nearly identical with” a law in Texas that the court four years ago found to be an unconstitutional burden to women seeking abortion. The onset of the pandemic, followed by economic collapse, and the social and political upheaval of an election year—any of these would be remarkable on their own. Yet in all of this, we have adapted to find new ways of worshipping, socializing, working, sharing, and learning together. Yes, these adjustments were and continue to be stressful, but these are also times of grace, as we see faith and courage overcome desolation and fear. Perhaps that is why it’s no surprise that our schools across the Midwest rose swiftly to meet the challenges of COVID-19 (page 14), stepping up in the same way Jesuits have done since our founding. In Cincinnati, at Bellarmine Parish and Xavier University (page 20), the pandemic united the parish and university to work together in unique and innovative ways, as perhaps nothing else could have. At the same time, the Seminars in Ignatian Formation and Leadership (SIF) program (page 19) continued to offer training in the Spiritual Exercises to those serving at our Jesuit works. This vital program transitioned successfully to an online model, so that the ripple effect of this training continues.

The two silver (white) “waves,” at the bottom of the shield symbolize Lake Michigan (the shores of the Archdiocese of Chicago where Bishop Tylka served prior to becoming a bishop) and Lake St. Mary (at the seminary which the Bishop attended). Together the waves hearken to our Baptism which initiates into the life of Christ and also alludes to John the Baptist.
