CJB-Family-Handbook.Pdf FAMILY HANDBOOK 2014-2015 MISSION STATEMENT Cardinal Joseph Bernardin School is a Catholic elementary school jointly sponsored by four parishes: St. Elizabeth Seton, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Julie Billiart, and St. Stephen, Deacon & Martyr. Under the collaborative leadership of these parishes, it provides a unique regional vehicle for the total faith formation of its students according to the educational policies established by the Archdiocese of Chicago. Cardinal Joseph Bernardin School stems from and supports the evangelization and catechetical ministries of its sponsoring parishes by providing a Christ-centered quality Catholic education. The school offers academic instruction of the highest caliber within a community of students, faculty, families, staff and clergy that promotes the teachings of the Church, reverence for the liturgy, prayer, proper formation of conscience, development of virtue, and social service outreach. Respecting the dignity of the individual person and sensitive to the needs of a diverse society, we strive to enhance and strengthen the faith and spirituality students first acquire in their homes. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Grayson Bourke, Community Engagement Coordinator for the East Bluff Community Center, and as part of his graduate internship through ISU, is conducting a neighborhood assessment (a three question survey) in the East Bluff. The purpose of the assessment is to give the EBCC a better understanding of resident needs and to attract community partners to help fill those needs. He was wondering if members of the St. Bernard's congregation would be willing to volunteer their time to knocking on doors and conducting this survey in the coming weeks, as he would need volunteer assistance. The onset of the pandemic, followed by economic collapse, and the social and political upheaval of an election year—any of these would be remarkable on their own. Yet in all of this, we have adapted to find new ways of worshipping, socializing, working, sharing, and learning together. Yes, these adjustments were and continue to be stressful, but these are also times of grace, as we see faith and courage overcome desolation and fear. Perhaps that is why it’s no surprise that our schools across the Midwest rose swiftly to meet the challenges of COVID-19 (page 14), stepping up in the same way Jesuits have done since our founding. In Cincinnati, at Bellarmine Parish and Xavier University (page 20), the pandemic united the parish and university to work together in unique and innovative ways, as perhaps nothing else could have. At the same time, the Seminars in Ignatian Formation and Leadership (SIF) program (page 19) continued to offer training in the Spiritual Exercises to those serving at our Jesuit works. This vital program transitioned successfully to an online model, so that the ripple effect of this training continues.

The field is red which is a color associated with the Holy Spirit. The life of any priest and bishop is placed under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The two silver (white) “waves,” at the bottom of the shield symbolize Lake Michigan (the shores of the Archdiocese of Chicago where Bishop Tylka served prior to becoming a bishop) and Lake St. Mary (at the seminary which the Bishop attended). Together the waves hearken to our Baptism which initiates into the life of Christ and also alludes to John the Baptist.
