Allen Lincoln, Nebraska August, 2011 DISCONTINUITIES: PREDICTING INVASIONS AND EXTINCTIONS Aaron Lotz, Ph.D. University of Nebraska, 2011 Advisor: Craig R. Allen In this dissertation, I explore multiple tenets of the textural discontinuity hypothesis, which states that hierarchical landscape structures with scale-specific pattern entrain attributes of animals inhabiting the landscape. Landscapes form hierarchies that are structured by vegetative, geomorphological and contagious disturbance processes. The spatial and temporal patterns inherent in landscapes reflect numerous processes, interacting on distinct scales, which shape the assembly of animal communities. Analysis of body mass patterns and functional group distributions has been suggested as methods to provide insight about these underlying hierarchical processes. Scientists have posited that species at the edges of body mass aggregations may be exposed to highly variable resources. This dissertation focuses on the distribution of biological diversity in space and time and socio-ecological factors that are contributing to the worldwide increase in invasive and endangered species. I analyzed invasions and extinctions of birds and mammals across five Mediterranean-climate ecosystems and in 100 countries using an information-theoretic approach. All body mass distribution data analyzed were discontinuous. This work provided further support for Holling’s textural discontinuity hypothesis. Alpha diversity of function increased in 9 out of the 10 Mediterranean-climate ecosystems analyzed when NIS were introduced into the community. After the introduction of NIS, I observed a decrease in cross-scale redundancy of functional groups in mammals and when both taxonomic groups were combined. In Eocene Epoch mammal data, speciation events were not detected near body mass aggregation edges. Only 64% of the biomes in mammals had ecoregions with similar structure and only 50% of the biomes in birds had ecoregions with similar structure, which may be a result of coarse landscape classification schemes. GDP per capita was positively correlated with the proportion of NIS bird and mammal species within a country. Resilience of a country was correlated to life expectancy. As life expectancy increased, resilience of a country decreased. Results may help us make proper management decisions in monitoring particular non-indigenous species and focus conservation efforts on those native species. iv DEDICATION For Barry and Susan v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I wish to express sincere appreciation to Dr. Craig R. Our Puma sightings take some beating, as they have stood for the last three years at 6, 7, and 8. For sure none of us will ever forget the magical 45 minutes spent observing Amber meeting up with her four 1- year-old cubs as they joyfully greeted her return.

Day 2 Having arrived smoothly courtesy of American Airlines, we immediately set to work in the savannahs surrounding the Viru Viru airport. Here we were delighted to see Greater Rhea, Red-winged Tinamou, Campo Flicker and flocks of Blue-crowned Parakeets. After a fine lunch in Santa Cruz we headed for the Piraí River on the west side of the city, and the Urubó savannahs beyond it. Once we found a sheltered spot out of the wind we had great birding, seeing, among many others, Speckled Chachalaca, Yellow-tufted Woodpecker, Blue-winged Parrotlet, Green-cheeked Parakeet, Golden-collared and Chestnut-fronted Macaws, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Thrush-like Wren, and Greater Thornbird. A pair of Titi Monkeys was also popular here. Day 3 This morning was spent at the Jardín Botánico, ten kilometres east of the city of Santa Cruz. By the roadside we saw White Woodpecker and Red-crested Cardinal and around the pond we found a dozy Brown-throated Three- toed Sloth, Social and Rusty-margined Flycatchers (very thoughtfully perched next to each other for ease of comparison), Blue-crowned Trogon, Blue-crowned Motmot and Narrow-billed Woodcreeper. Highlights in the forest included Rufous Casiornis, White-wedged Piculet, White-crested Tyrannulet, Fawn-breasted Wren, Ferruginous Pygmy-owl and a family of Silvery Marmosets. This afternoon we drove to Los Volcanes where we were greeted by Andean Condor, Military Macaw, Channel-billed Toucan, Red-billed and Turquoise-fronted Parrots and noisy, sky-filling flocks of Mitred Parakeets.

We present the bird collection catalogue of the world fauna from the patrimony of the Zoological Museum of Cluj (founded in 1859). The studied collection includes 221 specimens belonging to 172 species, 59 families, 18 orders. Especially, we mention a small hummingbird collection made of 45 specimens, 38 species; some endemic species, three from Brazil (Malacoptila striata, Hemithraupis ruficapilla, Paroaria dominicana) and Apteryx oweni (New Zealand). Also, the collection includes other distinguished species as: Goura victoriae, Argusianus argus grayi, Tragopan melanocephalus, Lophophorus impejanus. Keywords: catalogue, collection, exotic bird, museum, Cluj (Romania). Rezumat. Colecia de psri exotice a Muzeului Zoologic (Universitatea Babe-Bolyai) din Cluj (România). Prezentm catalogul coleciei de psri din fauna mondial din patrimoniul Muzeului de Zoologie din Cluj (infiinat în 1859). Colecia studiat; cuprinde 221 de exemplare încadrate în 172 de specii, 59 de familii, 18 ordine. Remarcm în mod deosebit o mic colecie de colibri alctuit din 45 de exemplare, 38 de specii; câteva endemite, trei din Brazilia (Malacoptila striata, Hemithraupis ruficapilla, Paroaria dominicana) i Apteryx oweni (Noua Zeeland).
