USA WATER POLO INSIDE WATER

Introducing Water Polo Through SplashballTM

Most kids learn to play through - and soccer through Kid- die Kick. Until now, however, there haven’t been many options to learn the basics of water polo before the ages of 9 or 10. Splashball™ changes all that. This month USA Water Polo is rolling out one of its most impor- tant new programs ever. Aimed at boys and girls aged 5-9, Splash- ball™ uses flotation, shallow pools and other kid-friendly elements to allow players to graduate to a friendly version of water polo di- rectly from beginning swim lessons. With the Navy in the water and Thunder in the air...it was bound to be interesting. As part of Tampa Bay Navy Week, Tampa Bay Thunder Water Polo participated in a joint exhibition game with the U.S. Navy Leap Frogs (comprised of SEALs and Special Warfare Combatant Crewman) on March 14. The highly publicized event drew a packed house at North Shore Aquatic Complex in downtown St. Petersburg as part of a combined recruiting effort. “Some of the Navy SEALs’ most successful recruits are water polo players due to their strength, agility, and endurance in the water,” said Lieut. Dave Hecht, representing the U.S. Navy’s Office of Community Outreach. The event commenced with a “beach landing” performed by the Navy Leap Frogs, followed by a city procla- mation presented by St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster to Chief Petty Officer J.C. Ledbetter, team leader for the Navy Leap Frogs. The mayor also performed the first ball toss to start the game. Tampa Bay Thunder Water Polo is the area’s lead developer of high school water polo. “We hope this event will get more high school kids interested in the sport,” said Wouter Vanderhorst, who helped cofound the University of California, club four years ago. “If you go to Orlando, they have 26 high school water polo teams. Miami has 50. In Tampa Bay...we have zero. Word is starting to catch on though, and each practice we’re starting to get new Berkeley and talented players.” May 21-23, 2010 For more information about Tampa Bay Thunder Water Polo, visit www.thunderwaterpolo.com.
