SEMINOLE HIGH WATER POLO Tony Ackerson, Head SHS Water Polo Coach Pool Phone- 407-302-1034 (Dale Aquatic Center) [email protected] 2020 SEASON TEAM MANUAL TEAM POLICIES & INFORMATION FOR PROSPECTIVE ATHLETES AND PARENTS OVERVIEW: Water Polo is a highly physical and potentially dangerous sport that can result in a variety of injuries. Players will comply with coaches’ instructions at all times. Players not adhering to this are subject to immediate termination from the team. WHO CAN TRY OUT FOR THIS TEAM?: All students with a minimum GPA of 2.0 and a completed, current physical may try out for the team (A PHYSICAL LASTS FOR ONE CALENDAR YEAR; IF YOU GOT A PHYSICAL FOR SWIM TEAM BACK IN THE SUMMER, IT WILL STILL BE GOOD FOR WATER POLO). All paperwork must be completely filled out and notarized before practice with the team may occur. A sports physical may be obtained at most walk-in medical centers, but make sure that the doctor uses the FHSAA Physical form. You can download all necessary forms at the Seminole High website, or pick the appropriate forms up from the Athletic Department in the front office of the school. SIGN UP NOW FOR REMIND TEXTS! All players (and parents) should sign up for Remind texts from Coach Ackerson. It’s free and easy, simply text the message @shspolo15 to this number: 81010. If you cannot text, you can simply email [email protected] (you can leave the subject blank). IMPORTANT CONTACTS: Coach Ackerson’s email- [email protected] Pool office #- 407-302-1034 Coach Ackerson’s cell / voicemail- 407-430-9266 SHS Athletic Department- 407-320-5057 SCHEDULE AND UPDATES: The team practice schedule, which includes the game dates and times, and all updates will be posted on the Seminole Aquatics website, www.seminoleaquatics.org, under the SHS POLO tab. WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE THIS TEAM: This is purely a coach’s decision based on, but not limited to, water polo skills and ability, swimming ability, attitude, practice habits, and citizenship. We will keep a roster of student-athletes that gives us the best chance to be successful, and a team that Seminole High students, parents, faculty, and staff will be proud of. The water polo team places a premium on swimming speed and endurance. Players with little or no background in competitive swimming will struggle to make the team. It is highly recommended that these players first complete a full season of either high school swimming or club swimming before attempting to make the water polo team at SHS. Players from last years’ team should have no automatic expectations of making this year’s roster. To prepare for this season, players should have been competitively swimming and playing club water polo in order to improve. COACHES: Coach Tony Ackerson is the Head Coach of Seminole High School Water Polo. He will handle all practices, planning, and administrative issues pertaining to the team. He will be assisted by Nathan Krug, Javier Velazquez, and Ryan Ackerson. SPRING BREAK- The Seminole County school closure from March 16-20 does not exempt our players from practice, as the District Tournament begins just two weeks after Spring Break concludes. We will plan to practice from 7:30 to 10 AM each day of that week. Players that not able to attend ALL of these practices may not try out for the team. PLAYING TIME: There are never any guarantees concerning playing time. These decisions are made by Coach Ackerson based on what is best for the team. If individual playing time is a concern, as a parent or as an athlete, DO NOT TRY OUT FOR THIS TEAM. PRACTICE TIMES: Practice begins promptly, on a whistle, with all athletes in the water when we start at 2:30 PM on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Wednesday practices will be longer, with athletes to be in the water by 2:00 PM. Practice concludes at 4:50 PM, with all team members assisting in resetting the pool course, pulling out the goals, putting away equipment, etc. COURSE SET-UP/BREAKDOWN: All athletes are expected to participate in setting up and breaking down the competition course when we host home games. Typically, the girls will set up, and the boys will clean up. FIRST PRACTICE DATES: The first official day of practice will be on Tuesday, January 21. FINGERNAILS: Need to be kept trimmed as short as possible, at all times. MATERIALS NEEDED FOR THE WATER POLO TEAM: Swimsuit (One-piece only for the female athletes), towel, goggles. Each player should consider the purchase of a water polo ball as well. Total Team Wares in Longwood (407-644-1333) has a variety of practice swimsuits, goggles, balls, etc. Over-the-counter ear drops are good for helping to prevent ear infections, and these should be used every day after practices and/or games. TEAM EQUIPMENT ORDER: We will do an order for a team suit, team t-shirt, and a team sweatshirt as soon as we have our final roster determined. All team members must, at the minimum, purchase a team suit and t-shirt. SHS WATER POLO ATTENDANCE POLICIES INFO ON REQUIRED AND OPTIONAL PRACTICES-- PARENTS AND PLAYERS, PLEASE READ CLOSELY AND CONTACT COACH ACKERSON IMMEDIATELY WITH ANY QUESTIONS: 1) All afternoon practices are mandatory, barring illness (you must physically miss school that day with an excused absence) or tutoring (must bring written proof from the teacher, including the date and time you left tutoring). Bottom line, if you’re in school, you’re at practice. 2) If you miss practice, you MUST leave your coach an email or voicemail describing the circumstances of your absence. If it falls within the above guidelines, it will be excused, but the missed time will still need to be made up. MESSAGES LEFT AFTER THE DAY OF THE ABSENCE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED, REGARDLESS OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES. 3) Penalties for Unexcused Afternoon Practice Absences: First Time= The player can not dress out for 1 game; Second Time = DISMISSAL FROM TEAM. Late to Practice: You must have a pass from a teacher, showing the time and date that you left for the pool. If not, it is recorded as an unexcused absence (see above). FAMILY VACATIONS AND HOLIDAYS: It’s a short season, and the inevitable rainouts and missed time due to weather issues makes every day of practice even more critical. Please begin now to schedule appointments and vacations around the team schedule in order to avoid conflicts later. Don’t miss practice for a dentist appointment if it can be made on a non-school day. MISCELLANEOUS ISSUES: FUNDRAISING AND TEAM SUPPORT: High school water polo has a large number of high costs associated with it (referee fees for home games, tournaments, new balls, additional caps, goals, nets, etc). Plan on participating in the fundraising that we will need to do, whether it’s a player donation fee, or an online fundraiser. Details will be coming soon. VARSITY LETTER REQUIREMENTS: Finish the season in good standing. CLUB SWIMMING: There is a USA club swim team, Seminole Aquatics, training out of the pool at SHS. They train 12 months a year. All of the successful swimmers at SHS train on USA club teams, the great majority of them with Seminole Aquatics and Coach Ackerson. He can provide you with more information about Seminole Aquatics, or you can go to www.floridaswimming.org for a list of other Central Florida teams. For more information about joining Seminole Aquatics, go to www.seminoleaquatics.org. Again, if you’re serious about becoming a better player, club swimming absolutely needs to be part of the picture. SATURDAY CLUB SWIM PRACTICES: Our year-round club/high school swimmers that play for the SHS Water Polo team are highly encouraged to continue to stay active on the Seminole Aquatics club swim team, as the Saturday swim sessions focus on swimming technique, starts, turns, and finishes. Practice on Saturday mornings begins in the weight room at 8 AM, followed by swimming at the pool from 9 to 10:30 AM. To do this, email [email protected] and let us know that you want to continue swimming during the water polo season. The monthly cost for the season (February-March-April) will be $50 per month. Athletes that are either new to Seminole Aquatics (SA) club swim team, or have not been registered and active with the team within the past six months must go through the registration process at SA. Again, please contact [email protected] with any questions. BLOOD DONATIONS: Donating blood is a great thing to do. Please do it as much as you can, but only in the off-season. SPECIAL FOR PARENTS: Thanks in advance for the great support that our team always enjoys. If you would like to become more involved, we need ticket takers for our home games, as well as people willing to learn and help out at the scoring table. Our “regulars” at the scoring table are incredibly efficient and very good at what they do. We would love to have more new parents sit in and learn from the best. Just come find Coach Ackerson before a game, and ask to sit in at the table and learn! PARENTS: We would also ask that our parents not engage in open, negative speculation about athletes’ playing time, starting lineups, or game strategies, as this does nothing positive for the team. There will be some things that you’ll agree with, and others that you’ll disagree with.
