Issue 41: The American Puritans The American Puritans: Did You Know? Little-known or remarkable facts about the American Puritans Cassandra Niemczyk is an independent scholar who contributed to The Variety of American Evangelicalism (Tennessee, 1991). Critic H. L. Mencken once said, wrongly, “Puritanism is the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.” On the contrary, Puritans read good books and enjoyed music. They drank beer with meals and rum at weddings. Puritans swam and skated, hunted and fished, and played at archery and bowling (as long as the games were not in a public tavern or on Sunday). The famous “Pilgrims,” who landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620, were so radical they were usually disliked and sometimes hated. Unlike most Puritans, they did not seek to reform the Church of England; they thought the church was beyond help. Most weddings in New England were performed not by ministers but by magistrates. Wedding rings, seen as “popish,” were not used. The early settlers of Massachusetts included more than 100 graduates of Oxford and Cambridge. One historian termed Massachusetts “the best-educated community the world has ever known.” In Puritan worship, a prayer could last an hour or more; a sermon, two hours. In a lifetime, a Puritan might hear 15,000 hours of preaching. Within only six years of their arrival, while still trying to hew out an existence, the Puritans founded a religious college named Harvard. Puritans wanted highly educated ministers, not “Dumme Doggs,” as they called less-trained examples. New England residents who failed to attend worship services on Sunday morning and afternoon were fined or put into stocks. -
How English Baptists Changed the Early Modern Toleration Debate
RADICALLY [IN]TOLERANT: HOW ENGLISH BAPTISTS CHANGED THE EARLY MODERN TOLERATION DEBATE Caleb Morell Dr. Amy Leonard Dr. Jo Ann Moran Cruz This research was undertaken under the auspices of Georgetown University and was submitted in partial fulfillment for Honors in History at Georgetown University. MAY 2016 I give permission to Lauinger Library to make this thesis available to the public. ABSTRACT The argument of this thesis is that the contrasting visions of church, state, and religious toleration among the Presbyterians, Independents, and Baptists in seventeenth-century England, can best be explained only in terms of their differences over Covenant Theology. That is, their disagreements on the ecclesiological and political levels were rooted in more fundamental disagreements over the nature of and relationship between the biblical covenants. The Baptists developed a Covenant Theology that diverged from the dominant Reformed model of the time in order to justify their practice of believer’s baptism. This precluded the possibility of a national church by making baptism, upon profession of faith, the chief pre- requisite for inclusion in the covenant community of the church. Church membership would be conferred not upon birth but re-birth, thereby severing the links between infant baptism, church membership, and the nation. Furthermore, Baptist Covenant Theology undermined the dominating arguments for state-sponsored religious persecution, which relied upon Old Testament precedents and the laws given to kings of Israel. These practices, the Baptists argued, solely applied to Israel in the Old Testament in a unique way that was not applicable to any other nation. Rather in the New Testament age, Christ has willed for his kingdom to go forth not by the power of the sword but through the preaching of the Word. -

ROWLAND August 2011 Copyright Gary A. Rowland 2011 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Historians are divided concerning the ecclesiological thought of seventeenth-century minister John Cotton. Some argue that he supported a church structure based on suppression of lay rights in favor of the clergy, strengthening of synods above the authority of congregations, and increasingly narrow church membership requirements. By contrast, others arrive at virtually opposite conclusions. This thesis evaluates Cotton's correspondence and pamphlets through the lense of moderation to trace the evolution of Cotton's thought on these ecclesiological issues during his ministry in England and Massachusetts. Moderation is discussed in terms of compromise and the abatement of severity in the context of ecclesiastical toleration, the balance between lay and clerical power, and the extent of congregational and synodal authority. -

NATURAL LAW AND COVENANT THEOLOGY IN NEW ENGLAND, 1620-1670* John D. Eusden ADDICTION TO STEREOTYPES has often prevailed over insight and research in studies of Puritan political life. Many investigators have described the early New England communities as "Bible commonwealths," theocracies, or would- be kingdoms of righteousness. These terms are partly true, but they tend to obscure the profundity of Puritan political philosophy by accentuation of biblicism, rigid morality, and the role of the clergy. The purpose of this essay is, first, to show that early New England leaders were as receptive to arguments drawn from nature and reason as they were to those from the Pentateuch and a moral code. The thesis offered is that the Puritans used natural law categories, understood in their own way, and that, although they were essentially products of the seventeenth century, they partly anticipated the political thought of the eighteenth. Secondly, it is hoped that this study of natural law among a Protestant group will help to probe the relationship between the faith which is rooted in Rome and that which stems from the Reformation. -

It argues that antinomians, by rejecting traditional concepts of social authority, created divisive political factions within the godly party while it waged war against King Charles I. At the same time in New England, antinomians organized a political movement that called for a democratic commonwealth to limit the power of ministers and magistrates in religious and civil affairs. When this program collapsed in Massachusetts, hundreds of colonists returned to an Old England engulfed by civil war. Joining English antinomians, they became lay preachers in London, New Model Army soldiers, and influential supporters of the republican Levellers. This dissertation also connects the study of republican political thought to the labor history of the first British Empire. -

Covenantal Democracy in America: Two Radicalisms. Copyright 2006 Graham Maddox and Tod Moore Abstract [see conference abstract] It has long been accepted that Calvinism made a contribution to the radical features of American democracy, and the radical implications of the covenant theology give rise to two claims in the literature: first, that covenant theology produces activist, reformist, and democratic ideas; second, that in New England, it led to the first modern, secular, practical democracies. As well as these two claims, other effects of Calvinism in America could include its indirect influence on the drafting of the 1787 Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Owing to the ambiguity of Calvinism, however, some confusion is evidenced by the demonstrable inability of commentators to make convincing connections between the early experiments in democracy in New England, and the anti‐democratic republicanism of the Constitution and of the literature of the Revolutionary era. To address the problem, we propose a distinction between two types of Calvinism, both of which have profoundly affected the American political landscape in different ways. First, we posit "I‐type" Calvinism, which was the prevailing type in early New England, and which includes the idea of radical democracy. The other form of Calvinist political ideology we propose is "P‐type", in which democracy is opposed in favour of republican ideals. The statements of propagandists for the two sides of seventeenth century Calvinism, the Independents and the Presbyterians, can be used to illustrate the differences between I‐type and P‐type Calvinist politics, as well as their underlying similarities. Perhaps the most engaging matter to arise is the way that initially similar belief systems can subsequently diverge so much on political questions. -

Welcome to Christ Covenant Presbyterian Church This book is written to give you an overview of what Christ Covenant Presbyterian Church is all about. We use it in conjunction with Inquirers Sunday for people who are interested in joining this church. Ideally, people will read this book before attending Inquirers Sunday. This enables us to discuss pertinent questions during that time. This book basically describes what we believe the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ is supposed to be and what it is supposed to do. Our basis for these beliefs is the Word of God, the Bible. We aspire simply to be the church. Because we are sinners and imperfect people we do not realize our aspirations perfectly. As the Protestant reformers used to say, the Church must always be reforming, that is, growing closer to the biblical ideal. We hope this book and class will be helpful to you as you consider the place God has for you in his church. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, either at the class or to one of our elders or the pastor. It‟s more important than the size of the youth program or the quality of the nursery facilities because, as Paul goes on to say, sound doctrine is “the glorious Gospel of the blessed God.” All churches have a set of doctrines or beliefs.
