Resumen: El propósito del presente artículo será el de ubicar correctamente el conocido “mecanismo de Anticitera” en su contexto histórico, a la luz de las fuentes antiguas. Esto nos servirá como óptimo punto de partida para reconstruir el probable marco socio- cultural en el que surgirían éste y otros ingenios mecánicos, como los autómatas. Asimismo, sentaremos las bases para un replanteamiento del grado de tecnificación de la civilización helenística, de la mano de los thaumasiourgoi, los “fabricantes de maravillas”. Para ello nos valdremos de los conceptos fundamentales sostenidos por las ciencias físicas y mecánicas de la Antigüedad. Palabras clave: Mecanismo de Anticitera, Thaumasiourgoi, autómatas. THE ANTIKYTHERA MECHANISM AND THE HELLENISTIC THAUMASIOURGOI Category: Paper. Abstract: The purpose of the present paper is to locate correctly the known “Antikythera Mechanism” in its historical context in light of the Ancient sources. It would serve us as an optimal starting point to reconstruct the probable social-and-cultural framework in which this and other devices have risen, like the automata. Likewise, we will put the basis for a rethinking of the technical degree of the Hellenistic Civilization, by the hand of the thaumasiourgoi, the “wonder-makers”. In doing so, we will make use of the mainstream concepts defended by the physic and mechanic sciences from Antiquity. Key words: The Antikythera Mechanism, Thaumasiourgoi, Automata. ISSN : 2174 - 0399 URL: http://studiahermeticajournal.com Page 4 ELVIRA SANCHEZ, JOSÉ IVAN, “EL MECANISMO DE ANTICITERA Y LOS THAUMASIOURGOI HELENÍSTICOS” SHJ, ISSUE II, nº 2, 2012 Prolegómenos En este artículo argumentaremos partiendo desde lo más concreto hasta lo más abstracto; es decir, desde el resto arqueológico (el mecanismo), hasta los distintos conceptos filosóficos que vertebran la tecnología griega y su mismo sentido, con el fin de despejar la falsa creencia popular de que dicho mecanismo es inexplicable atendiendo a su contexto histórico. Considerando que dicho ingenio es en todo caso una “maravilla” (técnica), se hace ineludible especificar qué entendemos por tal. Pues bien, los términos “fabricante de maravillas” (θαυμασιουργος)1, y el sentido mismo de “maravilla” (θαῦμα)2, se nos han conservado a través de la obra Pappus de Alejandría, del siguiente modo: καλοῦσι δὲ μηχανικοὺς οἱ παλαιοὶ καὶ τοὺς θαυμασιουργοὺς, ὧν οἱ μὲν διὰ πνευμάτων φιλοτεχνοῦσιν, ὡς Ἥρων πνευματικοῖς, οἱ δὲ διὰ νευρίων καὶ σπάρτων ἐμψύχων κινήσεις δοκοῦσι μιμεῖσθαι, ὡς Ἥρων αὐτομάτοις καὶ ζυγίοις, ἄλλοι δὲ διὰ τῶν ἐφ' ὕδατος ὀχουμένων, ὡς Ἀρχιμήδης ὀχουμένοις, ἢ τῶν δι' ὕδατος ὡρο λογίων, ὡς Ἥρων ὑδρείοις, ἃ δὴ καὶ τῇ γνωμονικῇ θεωρίᾳ κοινωνοῦντα φαίνεται. μηχανικοὺς δὲ καλοῦσιν καὶ τοὺς τὰς σφαιροποι ας [ποιεῖν] ἐπισταμένους, ὑφ' ὧν εἰκὼν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ κατασκευάζεται δι' ὁμαλῆς καὶ ἐγκυκλ ου κινήσεως ὕδατος3. 1 No confundir con el θαυματοποιῶν aludido por Platón en Sofista, 235b y República, 602d. La figura del “prestidigitador” o “ilusionista” citada por Platón se relaciona con el charlatán; de hecho, algo parecido refiere Eunapio en relación con Máximo de Éfeso, cfr. infra, p. 13. El θαυμασιουργος es un producto genuinamente helenístico-romano, si bien encontramos referencias a autómatas y a ingenios “divinos” (i.e. no mecánicos) en algunos filósofos presocráticos y en textos clásicos como la Ilíada (XVIII, 418-20) y la Odisea (VIII, 557-59), así como en la mitología (el ejemplo típico es Dédalo, cfr. Menón, 97d; Eutifrón, 11b-c, 15b; Hipias Mayor, 282a). 2 En nuestra opinión, el concepto de maravilla debe distinguirse del de “máquina”, mucho más general: “Machina est continens e materia coniunctio maximas ad onerum motus habens uirtutes. Pappus plantea a los fabricantes de maravillas como una rama destacada y heterodoxa de los μηχανικοί, junto a los “artífices de esferas”; unificamos ambos sentidos aquí con la finalidad exclusivamente académica de deslindarlos de las aplicaciones mecánicas más “prosaicas”, como la ingeniería y la arquitectura. Este extracto de sus μηχανικὰ προβλήματα, nos introduce directamente en el contexto científico-técnico del mecanismo de Anticitera, siglos después de Arquímedes, y en particular entre aquellos artífices de esferas que pretenden imitar el orden regular de los cielos, descrito por autores como Pappus o Vitruvio4, una de las bases fundamentales que traería consigo la sofisticación del modelo cosmológico aristotélico- ptolemaico, desarrollado ya bien entrada nuestra era. El mecanismo de Anticitera El enigmático “mecanismo de Anticitera”, rescatado de su lecho marino durante los dos primeros años del pasado siglo XX, arrastra consigo una apasionante tradición de estudio continuado, particularmente meritorio desde la obra de Derek J. de Solla Price, cuya primera contribución a la materia sería publicada en 19555, si bien su trabajo más importante y conocido no se publicaría hasta más de una década después, en 19746, y que aún hoy constituye el texto clásico de referencia sobre el ingenio helenístico. ciencia de los relojes de sol (γνωμονικῇ θεωρίᾳ). ISSN : 2174 - 0399 URL: http://studiahermeticajournal.com Page 6 ELVIRA SANCHEZ, JOSÉ IVAN, “EL MECANISMO DE ANTICITERA Y LOS THAUMASIOURGOI HELENÍSTICOS” SHJ, ISSUE II, nº 2, 2012 Actualmente, las contribuciones en este sentido se enmarcan en equipos de trabajo multidisciplinares, algunos de ellos dotados de grandes medios económicos y técnicos, y cuyos asombrosos descubrimientos, encauzados a través de prestigiosas revistas como Nature7, han otorgado carta de naturaleza definitiva a nuestro mecanismo8. 7 Concretamente, el extraordinario grupo de trabajo reunió a reputados especialistas en los campos de la astronomía, la historiografía y la mecánica, como son Tony Freeth, Alexander Jones, John M. Steele y Yanis Bitsakis. Hay que decir que otros grupos de trabajo se han ocupado de nuestro mecanismo de una u otra forma, como por ejemplo el The Antikythera Mechanism Research Project, el National Hellenic Research Foundation y la Association of Ancient Greek Technology Studies. Asimismo, habría que citar el Centre d’Histoire des Sciences et des Techniques, de la Universidad de Lieja, a cuya dirección se halla Robert Halleux, y el Scientific Instrument Commission of the IUHPS. De hecho, podemos encontrar recientes sesiones de trabajo en el British Council en Grecia (URL: http://www.britishcouncil.org/greece- science-the-antikythera-mechanism.htm), lo que evidencia la actualidad y la fascinación que despierta la materia. 8 No obstante, debemos tener en cuenta que hasta su reconstrucción más “fiable”, entre 2005 y 2006, ha tenido que transcurrir una larguísima fase de escaneo del mecanismo, que comenzó en el año 1971, cuando Price, alertado de la posibilidad de utilizar rayos-x para analizar el resto arqueológico, pidió permiso al Museo Nacional Griego y finalmente a la Comisión de la Energía Atómica del país para llevar a cabo sus pesquisas utilizando tal adelanto técnico. Así, junto con el Dr. Charalambos Karakalos, emprendería una costosa reconstrucción del mecanismo valiéndose de las radiografías efectuadas. WEBER Weill Cornell Medical College–Qatar Abstract: This contribution examines Shakespeare’s knowledge of the cosmological theories of Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) as well as recent claims that Shakespeare possessed specialized knowledge of technical astronomy. Keywords: Shakespeare, William; Copernicus, Nicolaus; renaissance astronomy 1. Introduction Although some of his near contemporaries lamented the coming of “The New Philosophy,” Shakespeare never made unambiguous or direct reference to the heliocentric theories of Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) in his drama or poetry. Peter Usher, however, has recently argued in two books Hamlet’s Universe (2006) and Shakespeare and the Dawn of Modern Science (2010) that Hamlet is an elaborate allegory of Copernicanism, which in addition heralds pre-Galilean telescopic observations carried out by Thomas Digges. Although many of Usher’s arguments are excessively elaborate and speculative, he raises several interesting questions. Just why did Shakespeare, for example, choose the names of Rosenskrantz and Guildenstern for Hamlet’s petard-hoisted companions, two historical relatives of Tycho Brahe (the foremost astronomer during Shakespeare’s floruit)? What was Shakespeare’s relationship to the spread of Copernican cosmology in late Elizabethan England? The Romans were indifferent to mathematical geography, with its system of latitudes and longitudes, its astronomical measurements, and its problem of projections. What they wanted was a practical map to be used for military and administrative purposes. Disregarding the elaborate projections of the Greeks, they reverted to the old disk map of the Ionian geographers as being better adapted to their purposes. Within this round frame the Roman cartographers placed the Orbis Terrarum, the circuit of the world. There are only scanty records of Roman maps of the Republic. The earliest of which we hear, the Sardinia map of 174 B.C., clearly had a strong pictorial element. But there is some evidence that, as we should expect from a land-based and, at that time, well advanced agricultural people, subsequent mapping development before Julius Caesar was dominated by land survey; the earliest recorded Roman survey map is as early as 167-164 B.C. If land survey did play such an important part, then these plans, being based on centuriation requirements and therefore square or rectangular, may have influenced the shape of smaller-scale maps. This shape was also one that suited the Roman habit of placing a large map on a wall of a temple or colonnade. Varro (116-27 B.C.) in his De re rustica, published in 37 B.C., introduces the speakers meeting at the temple of Mother Earth [Tellus] as they look at Italiam pictam [Italy painted].

  • Astronomy As a Key to the Architectural Projects of the Ancient Past
    The role of the sun in the Pantheon’s design and meaning Abstract Despite being one of the most recognisable buildings from ancient Rome, the Pantheon is poorly understood. While its architecture has been well studied, its function remains uncertain. This paper argues that both the design and the meaning of the Pantheon are in fact dependent upon an understanding of the role of the sun in the building, and of the apotheosised emperor in Roman thought. Supporting evidence is drawn not only from the instruments of time in the form of the roofed spherical sundial, but also from other Imperial monuments, notably Nero’s Domus Aurea and Augustus’s complex of structures on the Campus Martius – his Ara Pacis, the ‘Horologium Augusti’, and his Mausoleum. Hadrian’s Mausoleum and potentially part of his Villa at Tivoli are drawn into this argument as correlatives. Ultimately, it is proposed that sun and time were linked architecturally into cosmological signposts for those Romans who could read such things. Introduction The Pantheon is the best preserved architectural monument of the Roman period in Rome (fig. 1). Originally built by Agrippa around 27 BC under Augustus’s rule, it was destroyed by fire under Domitian, then rebuilt and finally completed in its present form during Hadrian’s reign, in ca. AD 128 (Hetland 2007)1. There is a great deal of uncertainty about the original Agrippan design; excavations, however, have suggested that this building was already circular (although probably open to the sky) 1 and orientated in the same direction (Thomas 1997, La Rocca 1999, Wilson Jones 2003: 180–82).

    Time and Religion in Hellenistic Athens: An Interpretation of the Little Metropolis Frieze. Monica Haysom School of History, Classics and Archaeology Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Newcastle University, November 2015. ABSTRACT Two stones that form a part of the spolia on the Little Metropolis church (Aghios Eleutherios) in central Athens consist of a frieze depicting a calendar year. The thesis begins with a Preface that discusses the theoretical approaches used. An Introduction follows which, for reference, presents the 41 images on the frieze using the 1932 interpretation of Ludwig Deubner. After evaluating previous studies in Chapter 1, the thesis then presents an exploration of the cultural aspects of time in ancient Greece (Chapter 2). A new analysis of the frieze, based on ancient astronomy, dates the frieze to the late Hellenistic period (Chapter 3); a broad study of Hellenistic calendars identifies it as Macedonian (Chapter 4), and suggests its original location and sponsor (Chapter 5). The thesis presents an interpretation of the frieze that brings the conclusions of these chapters together, developing an argument that includes the art, religion and philosophy of Athenian society contemporary with the construction of the frieze. Given the date, the Macedonian connection and the link with an educational establishment, the final Chapter 6 presents an interpretation based not on the addition of individual images but on the frieze subject matter as a whole. This chapter shows that understanding the frieze is dependent on a number of aspects of the world of artistic connoisseurship in an elite, educated audience of the late Hellenistic period.

Alexander Jones Page 1 7/13/19 Abstract This article reviews the evidence for the precision of observed (or allegedly observed) time determinations in the Greek astral sciences. In the practice of astrology, the determination of times—most commonly times of births—was the province of lay observers, and the precision was not normally more refined than to the seasonal hour. In astronomy, the extant observational records show a broad trend towards more refined precision, though the apparent culmination of this trend in Ptolemy is due not only to his employment of the armillary astrolabe as a precision time-telling instrument but also to his penchant for fabrication and tampering in his observation reports. Ptolemy's claims to have attained to unprecedented time precision in the observations on which his tables were ostensibly based likely contributed to their early and widespread adoption by astrologers. Introduction The practice of astrology was one of the most conspicuous points of contact between technical astronomy and the lay public in antiquity. The personal horoscope is the emblematic document of this contact. A client, who could be a person of practically any social status and who would likely be ignorant of all but the most obvious facts of astronomy, provided the astrologer with his or her date, time, and (if not local) place of birth, and the astrologer employed astronomical tables or almanacs to determine the celestial longitudes of the Sun, Moon and planets and the points of the ecliptic that were crossing the horizon and meridian planes at that time and place.
