Introduction This catalogue contains details about the Arts and design digital curriculum resources made available by The Le@rning Federation (TLF) to all schools in Australia and New Zealand.

The resources include: hundreds of interactive learning and assessment objects a large and diverse range of digitised items such as images, film clips, maps, songs, posters and documents, all with teachers’ notes.

Learning and assessment objects The Arts and design learning objects focus creative skills, critical and aesthetic appreciation of artistic techniques and technologies in media, music, and visual and performing arts. Many of the objects also provide opportunities for students to express individual creativity and develop their own artistic abilities.

Learning objects are generally published in series and some are also aggregated into single, larger learning objects. Aggregated learning objects are identified with the symbol.

An asterisk (*) on the series title indicates that not all the learning objects in that series have been released. The remaining learning objects will be released progressively.

Some learning objects contain non-TLF content. See the acknowledgements and conditions of use in the learning objects for details.

Digital resources A remarkable range of digitised items licensed from leading Australian and New Zealand cultural and scientific institutions is also available to teachers and students of Arts and design. These items include:

audio files of interviews, broadcasts and speeches

clips from documentaries, newsreels, television programs and feature films

photographs, paintings, line drawings, maps and documents

collections of images based around particular themes With each item, TLF supplies an educational value statement comprising a description and contextual information to enrich the value of the asset for teachers.

This catalogue contains a representative sample of digital resources relevant to Arts and design licensed from TLF’s partner institutions.

Themes This catalogue also includes examples of how teachers can draw on the extensive range of curriculum content to create thematic collections to challenge and engage students.

Accessing and viewing the content Government and non-government education authorities in each Australian state and territory and in New Zealand have responsibility for facilitating access to the pool of digital content. Full details about how to access the content, including the necessary technical and software requirements for viewing it, can be found on TLF’s website.

Mixing colours series (Years P–2) Students experiment with mixing primary colours to create new colours to paint predefined pictures. Features include: three levels of difficulty in each learning object an option to print completed pictures showing the proportions of primary colours used to make each colour. Students: are able to add different volumes of paints to create colours that they can then use.

Mixing colours: paint L1116 – Years P–2

Students use the mixing machine to mix primary colours to form different colours. Students can then select from a range of pictures and paint it using the colours they have created.

Mixing colours: match L1117 – Years P–2

Students select a picture and use the mixing machine to create colours to match those in the selected picture. They then paint a replica of their selection.

Design a layout series (Years 3–4) Students examine the visual elements of a layout and create a new layout to improve the reader’s response to a text. Manga maker: assessment series (Years 5–7) Students use their understanding of how manga conventions, including text, onomatopoeia and visual elements, fit together to create a manga story. Features include: illustrations of techniques for creating manga storylines, characters, colours and text an introduction to forms and uses of onomatopoeia opportunities to relate dialogue and onomatopoeia (sound words such as ‘Hiss!’ and ‘Bang!’) to body language and other visual elements in cartoon texts a printable report on the manga story assembled by the student. Manga pro studio: making manga (Years 5–9) Students play the role of a new employee in a manga design studio. Features include: opportunities to relate dialogue and onomatopoeia to body language and other visual elements in cartoon texts techniques for creating manga storylines, characters, colours, text and bubbles introduction to the forms and uses of onomatopoeia an option to print the student’s manga story sequence. Students: explore elements of manga comics such as storylines, characters, colours, text and bubbles relate onomatopoeia to non-verbal expressions and actions relate dialogue to visual elements in cartoon texts complete their own manga sequence by choosing dialogue and sounds to fit the illustrations.

Manga pro studio: making manga L2111 – Years 5–9 Students gain cultural knowledge of the Manga genre, together with knowledge of generic features of cartoons in Japanese and English. They also encounter the English term ‘onomatopoeia’.

Web designer series (Years 5–9) Students match material to the type of website it belongs to. Features include: factual and persuasive texts and texts of popular culture identification of the features of texts that identify their purpose and intended context explanations of the form, function, language and design of headings, body text, images and animations a glossary of difficult terms. Students: identify features of language and images that are related to context and text type distinguish between overtly persuasive texts and apparently neutral texts demonstrate their understanding that the choices of language, image and other features are influenced by a variety of factors.

Web designer: Viking Britain level 1 L3268 – Years 5–9

Students at jumbled web pages, all connected with Vikings. They identify features of the texts; for example, identify past tense verbs such as ‘came’, ‘became’ and ‘settled’. They then determine which parts belong in which sites and make the necessary swaps.

Web designer: Viking Britain level 2 L3267 – Years 5–9

‘Web designer: Viking Britain level 2’ is more complex than level 1, with more items to manage on the site.

Web designer: Dragons level 1 L3270 – Years 5–9

Fashion design series (Years 5–9) Students work in a virtual fashion design company called OzKiwi Designs. Features include: multi-choice quizzes to test understanding of key concepts a glossary of difficult terms and their pronunciation. Students: analyse the way purpose and audience shape different community texts, such as scientific reports, catalogues and magazine advertisements recognise that texts (both print and images) use different ways of communicating meaning explore how the choice of words and text structures contribute to how a text portrays particular social groups select textual elements appropriate to a purpose.

Fashion design: market research L295 – Years 5–9

Students examine customer profiles: gender, age, workplace, hobbies and major spending habits. They analyse results of a market survey of people’s preferences and review pie charts and customer interviews. They then compare the current survey results with last year’s.

Fashion design: quality control L296 – Years 5–9

Students test the properties of four fabrics for a fashion design company. They review a lab test summary table and examine the structure of the table and words used. They build a graphic interpretation of the text by adding simple icons. They then identify two fabrics which meet the agency’s needs and choose conclusions based on suitable scientific language.

Fashion design: advertising L297 – Years 5–9

Students help plan an advertising campaign for clothes made by a fashion design company. They review catalogue mock-ups, images and marketing text. They choose the items which best meet the company’s needs. They then compare and contrast three magazines and decide which is best suited for their target market.

Fashion design: studio L298 – Years 5–9

Students explore how a fashion company works to design a range of clothes. They choose words to complete a description about tools of the trade and answer questions about the roles of three departments within the company: market research, advertising and quality control.

Gamemaker series (Years 5–9) Students explore how video game makers change the look and feel of a game through combinations of sound, image, words and movement. Features include: illustrations to show how electronic games are composed to suit audience preferences demonstrations of how all elements in a multimodal text combine to construct different meanings the concepts of stereotypes and target audiences, and how they contribute to the process of game construction a model game to establish composition techniques and their effects on an audience a selection of game elements for students to assemble, review and edit to suit a given target audience feedback provided by a mentor team on the audience appeal of each game element selection an option to print a certificate summarising key principles of game composition. Character maker series (Years 5–9) Students discover how characters and animated scenes are assembled to suit audience preferences in the process of making of a TV advertisement. Features include: illustrations of how characters and animated scenes are composed to suit particular purposes a model scene to establish various composition techniques and their effects on an audience a selection of visual, sound or movement elements for students to assemble, review and edit to suit a given target audience feedback on the audience appeal of each student selection via a mentor character an option to print a certificate summarizing the key principles addressed in each learning object. Sonic space (Years 6–10) Students explore noises from home, the city, within the human body, in remote landscapes, in futuristic settings or in the Asia–Pacific region. Sonic motion (Years 8–10) In the Sonic motion learning objects, students choose a soundtrack and then make an imagescape by mixing images, visual effects and text to match the mood of the soundtrack. Features include: options for experimentation with order, pace, brightness, repetition and contrast of visual elements a screening mode to play back and review slide shows illustration of how to combine images with sounds or music for a live performance. a free-text tool and a range of visual effects related to water an option to print personal reflections on the creation, production and application of audiovisual slide shows. Found art (Years 7–8) Students bring new and different meaning to found objects as they position them within a new context of understanding and interpretation. Features include: introduction to key concepts related to transformation: juxtaposition, composition, perspective, repetition and contrast a selection of tools (scale, tone, move and rotate) and materials for students to manipulate objects. an interactive workbook and screen captures for students to evaluate and reflect on their own creative process and design. Students explore an outback environment and create a design using objects found in the bush, a woolshed, camp fire and on a scrap heap.

Innovation cycle series (Years 7–9) Students explore the different stages of the innovation cycle. They identify and apply research methods to advance an innovative design solution that meets pre-determined requirements. Features include: specific case studies from Australia an interactive notebook to record and collate outcomes and results simulations for interviews, surveys, testing and evaluations models for the steps involved in the required evaluations an option to print a summary of student’s findings. Students: explore the connections between ideas and development of a product through research, developing ideas, prototypes, testing and selling make analyses and evaluations of methods and products based on what they have learnt of research method.

Innovation cycle: idea L2285 – Years 7–9

Students explore ResMed Breathing Aids to learn how innovators develop ideas. They observe a simulated brainstorming session and complete a decision-making tree exercise to determine the most effective response to a problem. They learn to recognise a need or opportunity and creative thinking for problem-solving.

Innovation cycle: research and development L2286 – Years 7–9

Students explore Australian tea tree oil to learn how innovators use research and development to test and develop ideas. They observe simulated laboratory tests of different types of materials and are asked to assess the material most suitable based on a given criteria, then evaluate methods of research and development for an innovation against pre-determined criteria.

Innovation cycle: patent L2288 – Years 7–9

Students explore the company Bishop Technology Group to learn how innovators use patent to protect innovative ideas. They observe simulated interviews to determine the most appropriate type of Intellectual Property (IP) protection that should be taken on a new type of product. Includes issues of intellectual property, copyright, patent and Trademark ™. They then evaluate types of IP to protect the innovation against pre-determined criteria.

Innovation cycle: resource L2287 – Years 7–9

Students explore the Clean Up Australia innovation to learn how innovators use resources to develop ideas and promote products. They observe simulated interviews to determine the development stage at which a particular product should be outsourced. They then evaluate opportunities for resourcing against pre- determined criteria.

Innovation cycle: make L2290 – Years 7–9

Students explore the Caroma Dual Flush Toilet to learn how innovators manufacture design elements to market innovative ideas. They observe simulated field research and laboratory testing to assess the most suitable manufacturing of a product based on appearance and functionality. They then evaluate production process against pre-determined criteria and choose the preferred one.

Innovation cycle: sell L2291 – Years 7–9

Students explore Victa Lawn Mowers to learn how innovators choose distribution strategies to market innovative ideas. Students learn about the 4 Ps (product, price, place, promotion) of marketing, the use of target marketing, and understanding the buying behaviour of the target market.

Innovation cycle: service L2292 – Years 7–9

Students explore Incat Catamarans to learn how innovators use service strategies to market their innovative products. They observe simulated animations to determine different types of sales service, such as pre-sales service and after-sales service. They then complete a decision-making tree exercise to determine the most effective type of sales service for a pre-determined problem.

Creativity: Fifi Colston (Years 7–10) Students explore Fifi Colston’s studio and discover how she creates wearable art. Using Fifi as a guide, students are introduced to the creative process including aspects such as inspiration, motivation, planning and techniques. Features include: opportunity to print out their workbook and capture their image to paste into a computer application such as MS Word a selection of tools and materials for students to create their own design that communicates a message. Students: plan a design to communicate a message of their own by creating their own piece of virtual wearable art choose everyday objects and materials to include on a design palette with paint, stamp and pattern painting features evaluate and reflect on an artist’s creative process and evolution of ideas investigate techniques and methods used to create an artistic work evaluate and reflect on their own creative process and artwork explore the creative process of an artist.

Students explore Fifi’s studio and discover how she creates wearable art. They look at aspects such as inspiration, motivation, planning and techniques.

Directional design series (Years 9–10) Students are given a design brief to build an everyday object found at school or home that is well suited to the built environment and that minimises negative impacts on the natural environment in which it will be used. They design the item then adapt and refine their design on the basis of client feedback. Features include: Illustrations of differences in performance of the products over a one-year and five-year period mechanism for repeated testing of ideas and an interactive approach to design an interactive notebook to capture design specifications, user needs and stakeholder feedback an option to print a report completed by the student. Students: implement core requirements for designing an everyday product, including the minimisation of negative effects on the natural environment investigate the complexity of designed objects and the need to understand them in the context of their actual usage review stakeholder requirements and adapt designs to suit.

Directional design: study desk L3114 – Years 9–10

The design requirement focuses on ergonomics, multiuse and style.

Directional design (ESL) series (Years 9–10) Students are given a design brief to build an everyday object found at school or at home. The object’s design must be well-suited to the environment in which it will be used, and minimise negative impacts on the natural environment. Features include: glossaries and language games that highlight a language feature such as the correct use of ‘must’, ‘should’ and ‘might’ supports repeated testing of ideas and an iterative approach to design interactive notebook to capture design specifications, user needs and stakeholder feedback is included, as well as an option to print a report completed by the student. Students: read a design brief about an everyday product and seek information from relevant people regarding which design factors are most important consider the environmental impact of materials and manufacturing processes when choosing between design options use client feedback to refine their design. They evaluate the object’s performance after the first week and after five years.

‘Early morning, Heidelberg’

TLF ID: This oil painting by Walter Withers R3625 (1854–1914) is an excellent example of a style of Australian impressionist art characterised by a gentleness of mood and subtle colour and tonal exchanges, a lack of prescriptive detail and a preference for soft or low light settings, usually at dawn or in the late evening.

Games table, c1880

TLF ID: This is a decorative multi-purpose R4195 games table, made around 1880 from Huon pine. The top of this table can be opened to allow access to and storage of different sets of games (cards, chess and draughts) in the tapered box space beneath.

Australian Museum

The Australian Museum has an international reputation in the fields of natural history and research, community programs and exhibitions. The Museum has made some of its natural science and cultural artefacts available in digitised form to TLF for distribution to schools. Bark painting from Arnhem

TLF ID: Land, 1930s R8780 This is a bark painting depicting a dugout canoe and a Macassan prau or sailing vessel from Yirrkala in Arnhem Land. The unknown artist of this work would have cut bark sheets from stringybark trees then flattened and dried them over a fire or in the sun. The painting is done with brushes made from pieces of soft bark and sticks of various widths, with fine brushes made from human hair allowing Yolngu artists to paint with great detail.

Australian War Memorial

Its mission is to assist Australians to remember, interpret and understand the Australian experience of war and its enduring effect on Australian society. ‘Anzac, the landing 1915’

TLF ID: This large oil painting on canvas R8586 by an official war artist, George Lambert, depicts the near- impossible task that confronted soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during the landing at Gallipoli in Turkey on 25 April 1915. Lambert painted the work after a visit to Gallipoli in 1919.

‘Transport driver (Aircraftwoman Florence Miles)’, TLF ID: 1945 R8595 This portrait by Nora Heysen provides a positive representation of civilian women who volunteered to serve Australia in the auxiliary services created during the Second World War (1939–45). Heysen was the first woman in the Second World War to be appointed to the position of official

Australian Children’s Television Foundation

The Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF) is committed to developing and producing high-quality, innovative, entertaining and educational television programs for children.

TLF has licensed clips from various ACTF productions for inclusion in the national digital curriculum content pool. Productions clips are drawn from include: ‘I Think …’, ‘Kaboodle’, ‘Lift Off’, ‘Noah and Saskia’, ‘Round the Twist’ and ‘Yolngu Boy’.

‘I Think ...’ – Illusion is all This animated short features the TLF ID: R6074 unscripted voices of a highly articulate group of 5– to 9–year– old children discussing the concepts of magic, stories, reality and illusions. Colourful and imaginative hand-drawn animation incorporating photographs vividly illustrates the children’s comments.

‘Lift Off’ title sequence The title sequence from ‘Lift Off’ TLF ID: R8018 uses images and music to foreshadow the content and mood of the program. This clip uses cell animation, in which 24 frames per second are filmed to create the illusion of movement. Each movement change is painted on separate cells and filmed on top of a series of

Created by the Australian Film Commission and now managed by the National Film and Sound Archive, australianscreen online (ASO) is an innovative website with more than 1,000 moving-image clips from Australian feature films, documentaries, newsreels, short films, home movies and animations. As the education partner in this major project, TLF has selected hundreds of clips and provided accompanying teachers’ notes.

Painting Country, 2000: Maps of country In this clip Indigenous Australian artists explain that their knowledge of TLF ID: country is passed on through paintings. The paintings in the clip trace the R7217 land’s topography, but also contain personal history, mythology and the Dreaming tracks that crisscross the artists’ country. The clip shows that perpetual waterholes, which are essential to survival in remote regions, are recurring motifs in the paintings.

Fashionista – Donna-May Bolinger, 2004: Passionate about shoes This clip shows shoe and accessory designer Donna-May Bolinger in her TLF ID: Sydney showroom talking about her design process. The clip reveals how R10204 Bolinger combines the skills of an artist and a European-trained artisan to produce her handmade shoes and leather accessories. She sketches her ideas, derived from objects and images she has collected from antique shops and markets, and then makes a prototype of the product using the knowledge of shoemaking she learnt in Italy.

Arthur Boyd – Figures in the Landscape, 1985: Painting by hand This clip shows Australian artist Arthur Boyd working in his studio on ‘Bathers TLF ID: and Pulpit Rock’ (1984 85). In voice-over he describes how he uses his R9239 – fingers and the palm of his hand to paint. Boyd says this technique is quicker than using a brush and allows him to get closer to the canvas and to feel his way through the painting. He says the pleasure of painting is ‘very sensual’.

The 8th Wonder of the World, 1973: The Sydney Opera House sails The clip shows multiple views of the newly constructed Sydney Opera House, TLF ID: designed by Jørn Utzon (1918 ), that draw attention to its setting, the R7990 – uniqueness and beauty of its architecture and the technical achievement of its construction. This clip provides an example of a well-funded 1970s sponsored documentary.

Australian Voices

The Australian Voices project is a collection of recorded interviews commissioned by TLF that relate directly to other sound, still or moving image items in TLF’s pool of digital curriculum content. Interviews include first-hand accounts from people in fields such as creative arts, science, medicine, sport and politics. They speak about experiences such as war, natural disasters, working and everyday life.

David Hobson reflects on Joan Sutherland, 2005 This is an edited sound recording of tenor David Hobson recalling the TLF ID: atmosphere in the Sydney Opera House on 2 October 1990 when Dame Joan R8829 Sutherland, the famous opera singer, gave her emotional Australian farewell performance. Hobson speaks of Dame Joan’s sense of humour and her down-

to-earth nature.

Steven Heathcote recalls portraying Ned Kelly, 2005 This is an edited sound recording of leading Australian ballet dancer Steven TLF ID: Heathcote. He is recalling dancing the role of the bushranger Ned Kelly in the R8815 Australian Ballet’s 1990 production of ‘My name is Edward Kelly’. He outlines the mixed public perceptions of the character and the emotional challenges of

the role.

Michael Atchison describes work as a political cartoonist, 2008 This is an edited sound recording of Michael Atchison (1933–), talking about

TLF ID: his work before his recent retirement as chief political cartoonist for the R10096 Advertiser newspaper in Adelaide. He describes the process of getting a ‘feel’ for the main political news of the day, then choosing the topic of each cartoon. He also suggests that the negative public reaction to some of his cartoons was sometimes a result of readers getting his intent ‘completely wrong’.

John Collins recalls illustrations by Oodgeroo Noonuccal (Kath Walker), 2007 TLF ID: John Collins recalls the way the Indigenous poet Oodgeroo Noonuccal R8853 produced illustrations for her book ‘Father sky and mother earth’. He reveals how Noonuccal did not require expensive art materials to produce her

illustrations – she did the drawings with only a set of felt-tip pens. The drawings called upon traditional Indigenous styles of artwork such as dots and cross hatching.

Rolf Harris gives tips on how to be a performer, 2008 In this recording, Rolf Harris (1930–) explains important aspects of performing TLF ID: to a live audience. Harris outlines how he learned that it was best to engage R10246 with an audience by making eye contact with them. He suggests that a live performer can also win over an audience by making impromptu remarks that

acknowledge small incidents taking place, such as a person sneezing, but should not to attempt to ridicule members of the audience with ‘clever’ remarks.

Express Media

Express Media provides support and development opportunities for young Australians in writing and media. A key project for Express Media is the magazine Voiceworks, a quarterly magazine showcasing the poems, short stories, articles and artworks of Australian writers and artists under the age of 25.

This project features 30 of these works. The educational value statements have been written by young writers, providing a contemporary’s commentary on the work.

Interview with Mandy Ord by Benjamin Teicher and comic strip TLF ID: by Mandy Ord R9594 This work comprises the transcript of an interview between artist Mandy Ord and writer Benjamin Teicher, and a 12-panel black-and-white comic strip by Mandy Ord. In the interview Ord talks about the inspirations for her work and about her passion for the comic strip medium as a platform for social commentary. The comic is an autobiographical narrative about the need for an artist to make her work available to a wider audience and being treated as a ‘product’. In the interview Ord talks about ideas that are also explored in the comic strip, including identity and the role of

‘Leave us alone’ by Mel Stringer ‘Leave us alone’, a greyscale pen- TLF ID: and-ink illustration by Mel Stringer, R9530 comments on the effect of intimate relationships on creativity. The work may be read as a reflection on the ways that romantic relationships may compete with – and lose to – the creative impulse. Although the woman could be inspiring a bout of creativity, she is also stamping out access to the outside world. The drawing raises the question of whether the man is inspired by her or unable to commit to her as fully as she would like given the multitude of activities undertaken by his wandering arms.

‘Antipodean bowl with albatross

TLF ID: II’, 1991 R6115 This deep, cone-shaped, translucent crystal glass bowl with an ice-like hue and finish was made by Ann Robinson, a leading New Zealand glass artist and significant innovator in the field of glass-making.

Eharo (dance mask), 20th

TLF ID: century R6108 This is an inverted conical mask made by the Western Elema people of the Papuan Gulf. The eharo is a dance mask worn during Hevehe, a grand cycle of ceremonies that dominated the ritual and artistic lives of the Elema people during the early 20th century.

Gagadju bark painting, c1912

TLF ID: This bark painting that depicts the R7733 ancestor ‘Yungwalia’ was created in about 1912 by a Gagadju artist. Occupying a single sheet of stringybark, this artwork was painted directly onto the wall of a bark shelter that the Indigenous people of the Alligator River area built and lived in during the wet season. The artist used natural pigments of white clay and coloured ochres to create the painting.

TLF ID: c1861 R6388 This panoramic camera was the first to use a wide-angle lens to capture a field of view wider than that of the human eye. This innovation in camera design increased the photographer’s creative potential by making it possible to create panoramic images of subjects not static and

‘The dawn of art’, 1880s The drawings illustrate the styles TLF ID: R6645 and techniques traditionally used in rock art. For example, the kangaroo in the work on the top left clearly shows internal organs in the X-ray style of early rock paintings. TLF ID: sheepskin, 1971 – asset 2 R5081 The clip shows the Shane Surfboards factory, located in Sydney, which had diversified to make sheepskin boots for winter. It provides an example of innovation and diversification of a seasonal manufacturing operation.

‘New home from outer space’,

TLF ID: 1971 R5292 This clip featured in the weekly black-and-white newsreel, Australian Movie Magazine, depicts the ‘Futuro’, a dwelling imported from Scandinavia in 1971 and described as the only one of its kind in Australia – it was originally conceived by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen (1933–)

The National Gallery of Australia strives to foster a greater understanding and knowledge of visual art and the creative process as well as increase sensitivity to cultural differences and cultural identity. ‘Mount Arapiles and the Mitre Rock’, 1863 TLF ID: This oil painting by Nicholas R7959 Chevalier of geological features near Horsham in western Victoria presents the toweringly impressive grandeur of nature. Chevalier (1828–1902), a European artist, was familiar with the aesthetic idea of ‘the sublime’. Art that gave pleasure was called beautiful, but art that caused viewers to experience

‘Carpet Snake Dreaming’ by Toby Brown Tjampitjinpa, 1976 TLF ID: This painting depicts the Dreamtime R9946 story of the Carpet Snake. From Alcootha, the Carpet Snake travelled west to Yuendumu and then turned back to his own country, searching for one of his countrymen with whom he could share some food. Eventually he met another countryman, exchanged ceremonial greetings and then they went their separate ways. Toby Brown Tjampitjinpa (c1920–86) was a

‘Flying Dingoes’ by Mick Namararri Tjapaltjarri, 1974 TLF ID: This acrylic painting has a design R9948 superimposed on a map of the escarpment where the dingo became a landform. The central series of motifs reveal the dingo’s body, with tracks on either side representing its paw marks. The dingo’s long ears, depicted as elongated arcs on either side of the concentric circles, enabled it to fly.

‘Advertising Australia’, 1880s–1954 ‘Advertising Australia’ is a collection of TLF ID: Australian advertisements that feature R10620 the work of some of the country’s best known advertising agencies and designers. Organised chronologically from the 1870s until 1954 the advertisements clearly reflect the changing nature of Australian society.

‘Colonial life in art’, c1808–95 ‘Colonial life in art’ is a collection of oil TLF ID: paintings, watercolours, drawings and R10632 lithographs by 19th-century Australian artists. TEAL poster This is a Tasman Empire Airways Limited TLF ID: R2049 (TEAL) advertising poster produced in the 1950s to encourage travellers from Australia to fly to New Zealand and take advantage of recreational activities such as skiing – at this time, there were seven return flights weekly, with a flight taking about eight hours each way.

‘Protect New Zealand’ This poster produced by the New Zealand TLF ID: R4693 National Savings Committee highlights the kind of poster produced by graphic artists employed by government agencies set up to support New Zealand’s war effort in the Second World War – in this case, the poster is encouraging New Zealanders to invest in what were known as ‘victory loans’.

TLF ID: This poster, designed to encourage British R2648 migration to Australia, provides an example of advertising techniques of the 1920s. During this time advertising became more prolific, persuasive and aggressive with a greater use of emotive language and motifs.

‘Come on lads let’s give ‘em a break’, 1944

TLF ID: This polychrome poster highlights the role of art R4692 as a propaganda technique – posters similar to this one were used to encourage people to enlist in the armed services, and poster-like artworks by the official war artist portrayed the typical Kiwi soldier as ‘an ordinary bloke doing his bit’ and therefore worthy of emulation and support.

Department of Commerce poster, 1942

TLF ID: This black-and-white poster from the Second R2731 World War issued by the Department of Commerce, and produced by the Commonwealth Advertising Division encouraged readers to serve Australian lamb, bacon, apples and pears, dairy produce and wine at their dinner tables to support the war effort.

TLF ID: This poster advertises the 1923 silent-era R1558 romantic comedy film ‘The dinkum bloke’, a film that was considered by experts at the time to be artistically comparable to the best American imported films.

Chung Ling Soo, poster, 1905–18

TLF ID: This colour-lithograph poster titled ‘Chung Ling R3916 Soo, the Marvellous Chinese Conjurer’ advertises one of Australia’s most successful early shows on tour. Posters were a popular form of giving messages to the general public in the days before film and television.

‘There’s a man’s job for you in Australia’,

TLF ID: c1947 R3172 This poster produced by the Australian Department of Information around 1947 features a strong, bronzed man, wearing a slouch hat, singlet and trousers, walking over cultivated rolling hills. In the background are images of farming and manufacturing industries. The poster illustrates the emotive appeal to prospective immigrants – that there were opportunities in the wide open spaces of Australia, including the chance to be part of building new industries in the manufacturing, engineering and farming sectors.

‘No nukes in the Pacific’ poster, 1984 This screenprinted protest poster is a product TLF ID: R6114 of a peace movement that became aligned with the anti-nuclear movement – the boat on the shirt has a peace symbol on its sail; the peace movement opposed nuclear testing in the Pacific and visits by nuclear-armed and powered ships.

Poster for Mambo This is a colour promotional poster designed TLF ID: R4765 by Reg Mombassa in 1984 for the clothing company. It is typical of the irreverent, sometimes considered offensive, designs that made Mambo so popular with young people in the 1980s and 1990s.
