The High Holidays. Or even the Yom Tovim. Yet, however we name them, for the these are strange days. Days out of time, Days of which, nevertheless, call us to question how we live in time and with time. They are Awe strange days, no matter who you are…an occasional visitor, or perhaps a dedicated member of the choir, a leader in the community, or someone who feels rather uncomfortable in synagogue, and comes at this time of year, confronting that discomfort. Or even a member of our clergy team! These days are strange because they are days for confronting our estrangement, our separation, our lack of connection and perhaps a need for connection, with the One who creates reality and who is hidden within the creation. Strange too, because there really are no experts here, only beginners. Every single person who enters the synagogue gates, the Sha’arei Tsedek, these gates of righteousness, will know this interesting equality of experience, the slightly uncomfortable feeling of being at the very beginning, of something unknown. Because although of course, for many these Yamim Noraim, these Days of Awe, or High Holidays, will be familiar, and no matter how much you may look forward to being reunited with old friends, there is the potential here for something it is never possible to prepare Rabbi Shulamit for… Ambalu Principal Rabbi 7 SELICHOT AND ROSH HASHANAH סליחות SELICHOT Saturday 1 September 8:00 pm Coffee and Cake 9:30 pm Choral Service Synagogue Hall Selichot is a meditative, introspective choral service, introducing us to the particular mood, music and themes of the Days of Awe. • Reform Judaism: in 1000 Words
Reform Judaism: In 1000 Words God Context In recent years, Reform Jews have grown increasingly confident in expressing a diverse set of personal theologies. We are a people who struggle with God, as Jacob did when he became Israel, and this struggle requires that we acknowledge that we can say nothing about God with certainty, and so find meaning when we create space for diverse voices around the table. We recognise that it is when we assert absolute certainty (either way) without space for dissenting voices that we exclude others from the conversation, and lessen our own potential for understanding. In this article, Rabbi Mark Goldsmith, Rabbinic Partner at Alyth (North Western Reform Synagogue), explores the centrality of God in the Jewish narrative and its impact upon how we see our lives. We may understand God as a concept that shapes our ideas or a reality, active in the world. Both are legitimate in our community. Content The Torah assumes that God exists. From its very first words, In the beginning God created (Genesis 1:1), God is integral to the Jewish narrative and the essence of the universe. God’s relationship with the patriarchs and matriarchs of Judaism is that of a friend, supporter, critic, challenger and guide. God hears the protests of the Israelite slaves and guides and enables their liberation. God is the source of the guidance, Torah, that they take with them to the Promised Land and then pass on to future generations up to and beyond ourselves. God is there throughout in the Jewish narrative.

  • Annual Report 2013 Written 2014
Annual Report (2013) Throughout Jewish history, no place has been as important to Jews and the Jewish community as the synagogue. No other organisation has the same potential to transform Jewish lives – the synagogue is the natural home of prayer, of learning, of social action and of pastoral care. Chairman’s Report: This was the year that Alyth turned 80, and what a wonderful birthday year we have had. We began our year of celebrations way back in June, at Alyth, on a sunny Sunday afternoon with a community birthday party. Over 750 people turned up to celebrate - which we did in style. There were a host of activities all afternoon, a running tea with endless delicious homemade cakes, and a wonderful concert from Graham Gouldman that had everyone out of their seats and cheering in the Leo Baeck Hall. Throughout the year there have been other celebrations too, including the launch of the Alyth Cook Book, and there is a comedy night still to come. As always, these events showcased the magnificent partnership that exists between the professional team and volunteers. Every time Alyth puts on an event, it is superbly planned and executed with enormous commitment from so many people. We are truly fortunate, and our birthday year allowed us to reflect on this and also to celebrate our past and thank all those who have invested in the Shul for the last 8 decades. This time last year I said that the primary challenge for this Executive and Council was to make dynamic and appropriate appointments to enhance our Rabbinic and professional team.
