2 Welcome

We look forward to welcoming you during the Days of Awe. This Guide contains important details which will enable you to get the most out of the Days of Awe from Selichot through to Simchat Torah. If you need any further information you can contact us either on 020 8445 3400 or at [email protected]. As usual we will have a variety of services on offer including services for families with children in year six and under; discussion groups for teenagers; alternative-style services or spaces for quiet reflection. We will also be holding a Discussion Group and Meditation sessions on the afternoon of Yom Kippur. We are delighted this year to welcome a number of guests, some familiar and some new including Rabbi Professor Tony Bayfield CBE; Rabbi Colin Eimer, Emeritus Rabbi Sha’arei Tsedek; Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, Senior Rabbi to the Reform Movement and Deborah Blausten, Student Rabbi from College. Our community Rabbis, Rabbi Shulamit Amabalu and Rabbi James Baaden, together with our lay leaders, should provide us with thought provoking sermons, witty commentary, spiritual guidance and support over this period. It would be appreciated if you would help our Security Team by carrying the ticket issued to you personally at all times. Please show it when requested, as this will make your access to the site faster. Finally, may I take this opportunity, on behalf of everyone at Sha’arei Tsedek, and a meaningful Yom שנה טובה תכתבו to wish you and your loved ones a Kippur. 6 We speak of them as the Yamim Noraim, the Reflections Days of Awe. The High Holidays. Or even the Yom Tovim. Yet, however we name them, for the these are strange days. Days out of time, Days of which, nevertheless, call us to question how we live in time and with time. They are Awe strange days, no matter who you are…an occasional visitor, or perhaps a dedicated member of the choir, a leader in the community, or someone who feels rather uncomfortable in synagogue, and comes at this time of year, confronting that discomfort. Or even a member of our clergy team! These days are strange because they are days for confronting our estrangement, our separation, our lack of connection and perhaps a need for connection, with the One who creates reality and who is hidden within the creation. Strange too, because there really are no experts here, only beginners. Every single person who enters the synagogue gates, the Sha’arei Tsedek, these gates of righteousness, will know this interesting equality of experience, the slightly uncomfortable feeling of being at the very beginning, of something unknown. Because although of course, for many these Yamim Noraim, these Days of Awe, or High Holidays, will be familiar, and no matter how much you may look forward to being reunited with old friends, there is the potential here for something it is never possible to prepare Rabbi Shulamit for… Ambalu Principal Rabbi
