Welcome to Sea Island! This year’s Southern Grown Weekend promises to be full of fun and engaging experiences. As in the past, we come together to celebrate all things Southern, and this year, with our “How to Be a Southerner” workshops and demonstrations, we can brush up on our ability to tie a bow tie and shuck an oyster, or explore new tips for preparing southern cuisine and cocktails. The musical side of things will no doubt be a winner as well, starting with Garden & Gun’s Kick-off Dinner and a Show on Friday with Nashville-based Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors. The musical highlight of the weekend occurs on Saturday night when the Grammy®-nominated band NEEDTOBREATHE takes the stage. We appreciate the support and involvement of our sponsors, partners, and volunteers in planning and staging this year’s event. Thanks also go to every Sea Island team member who has helped make this weekend a reality. As they have for almost 90 years, they are providing the genuine, Southern hospitality for which Sea Island is known. Thank you for being part of this year’s festival. I hope you enjoy every moment of your time with us. Sincerely,

Scott Steilen, President and CEO, Sea Island

13 MUSIC

HANK COMPTON OPENING ACT, GARDEN & GUN’S KICKOFF DINNER AND SHOW BLACK BANKS TERRACE Hank has performed at many venues including The Ryman in Nashville, Gruene Hall in Texas, and The Troubadour in Los Angeles. He has toured and opened for legends such as Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson starting when he was only 17. Now, Hank plans to release his first EP: Kill What We Love. His storytelling writing dives into the intense topics of love, lust, drugs, drinking, loneliness, and finding identity. He dares to question the confines of the conservative bubble where he grew up, which bleeds into his music. Hank contrasts his vulnerability with intensity, creating a tension of opposites. While his lyrics may be deep, the music is contagious and his only hope for sharing his stories is that others will find a piece of themselves within his records.

DREW HOLCOMB AND THE NEIGHBORS GARDEN & GUN’S KICKOFF DINNER AND SHOW FRIDAY, AUGUST 31 | BLACK BANKS TERRACE, 7-10 P.M. Known for his rich voice and passionate, literate material, Drew Holcomb hails from Memphis. He grew up listening to Bob Dylan, , and James Taylor, and gravitated to their influence. His interest in music grew at the University of Tennessee and as he pursued his master’s degree in divinity at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. After settling in Nashville, he pursued a career in music and released his first EP, Lost and Found (2003). Washed in Blue followed (2005), then the concert souvenir Live from Memphis (2007). In 2006, he married Ellie Bannister, who began performing with Drew, joining in on and vocals. With the addition of guitarist/keyboardist Nathan Dugger and bassist Rich Brinsfield, the act became known as Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors, making their recording debut with A Neighborly Christmas (2007), followed by Passenger Seat (2008). A Million Miles Away (2009) was followed by Chasing Someday (2011), their first album to crack the Billboard Top 200 albums chart, peaking at 183, rising to eight on the folk chart and three on the independent survey. Through the Night: Live in the Studio appeared in 2012, then Good Light (2013), which climbed to 84 on the Top 200. By the time Medicine appeared (2015), Ellie had left the group to focus on her solo career, though she and Drew were still married, and Jon Radford joined on drums. The album topped out at 47 on the Top 200. They unveiled Live at the Ryman (2016), recorded during their first appearance at Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium. A brand-new studio album, Souvenir (2017) was preceded by the politically charged first single, “Fight for Love.”

14 WILDER OPENING ACT, SATURDAY NIGHT CONCERT RAINBOW ISLAND Wilder is a four piece Alt/Rock band based out of Nashville, Tennessee. Inspired by artists such as , , and , they have created a sound that embraces decades of Rock influences, the art of thoughtful songwriting, and an emphasis on high-energy shows. In late 2017, the band released two singles titled “Same Way” and “California” with producer/engineer Jacquire King (Grammy nominee and former engineer for James Bay, , , Kings of Leon, , etc.). These songs shine a light on what one can expect from a live performance. It’s a wide-ranging sound featuring guitar-driven melodies and wandering bass lines grounded by a full-bodied kick drum reminiscent of the 70’s. All the while vocalist Charlie Greene cuts through to deliver an emotional performance that balances on the fine line between clean and grit. They spent much of 2017 on the road touring with the likes of Kaleo, NEEDTOBREATHE, and Judah & the Lion, as well as kicking off the main stage at Sloss Fest. They will be opening for in the Spring of 2018. Keep up with all things Wilder and listen to their latest single, “California” available wherever you listen to music.
