QCB MD 1874,. the Catholic University Medical School, Dublin and Queen's College, Galway, he earned the degree of Doctor of Medicine of the Royal University and the Diploma of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1874. In 1874 he set up his own medical practice on Donegall Street, Belfast. He was a founder member, secretary and later president of the North of Ireland Branch of the British Medical Association. He was president of the Ulster Medical Association from 1880 to 1891. In 1880 he was named as a magistrate for the City of Belfast. Born 1852. Son of Bernard Dempsey, Coldagh, Ballymoney. Served 1914 - 18. Born 1884. Son of Alexander and Harriett Dixon, ‘Kincora’, Antrim Rd., Belfast. DODDS, Robert Leslie RNVR. Surgeon Sub - Lieutenant. Served as Surgeon Probationer. Foundation member of QUB Services Club. Graduated QUB 1920. Born at Dundee in 1898, son of the Rev R W Dodds, a Methodist minister. He was educated at the Methodist College, Belfast. He interrupted his medical studies to join the RNVR, and served with the Grand Fleet at Scapa Floe in HMS Mameluk. He qualified in 1920 and, after being house physician at Swansea General Hospital, came back to Belfast as demonstrator of anatomy. He decided to specialize as an obstetrician, and obtained an appointment as obstetric registrar at Charing Cross Hospital. He took the Fellowship in 1927, and proceeded to the Belfast MCh the same year. He subsequently joined the staff of the City of London Maternity Hospital, the Samaritan Hospital, the French Hospital, and the Bearsted Memorial Hospital. His real opportunity came with the reorganization of the London County Council's maternity services in 1934, in which he played a leading part; he continued to serve the Council as obstetric consultant at St James's Hospital, and was also obstetric consultant to the Ilford and Edmonton borough councils. During the second world war he served as surgeon to troopships 1943-44, with the rank of major RAMC, but had to resign his commission from ill-health. He died in the Middlesex Hospital on 26/01/1949, aged 50, survived by his widow. He was an expert in his own specialty, and an excellent lecturer and administrator. He was also of great courage, and Page !4 activated by humanitarian motives. Happening to be a universal blood donor, he was always ready to offer his blood for transfusion in emergencies. DOWSE. Served in the destroyer HMS Triton, stationed at Scapa Floe, through part of 1918. He was promoted to Surg. Sub. Lieutenant RNVR., with seniority from 16/10/18. Graduated QUB, BCh, DPH, BAO, QUB 1920. MD 1924. FRSM. After graduation and holding the offices of house physician at the Belfast Infirmary and Greenwich Hospital, he became RMO to the National Heart Hospital. Between the wars he became a well-known physician in London. In Page !5 the second war he served with the RAMC with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and for a time was Medical Adviser to the Malta Command. He was Mentioned in Despatches, awarded the TD in 1940 and made OBE in 1945. Born 20/11/1897. Son of William and Jeanne Dunn.Husband to Margaret Craig nee Eaton, daughter of Colonel Robert Young Eaton and Margaret Craig Eaton, Toronto. She gained the rank of Colonel Director-General in the service of the Canadian Women's Army Corps. She was invested as an Officer, Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1945. Born 20/11/1897.
