(2017). An Analysis of Marxist Perspective in John Lennon’s Imagine Lyrics. Yogyakarta: Sanata Dharma University Literary works contain a message or ideology to be conveyed by their author. The singer and songwriter expresses their thought, feeling and ideology through their songs. Imagine which was written by John Lennon is one of the anti- war songs. Although the song is about protest against the war, Imagine lyric also has deeper meaning which can be seen from other perspective. The objective of this study is to find out the literal and deeper meaning of John Lennon’s Imagine. There are two formulated problems in this study there are “What is the literal meaning of John Lennon’s Imagine?” and “what is the deeper meaning of John Lennon’s Imagine in Marxist Perspective?”. This study uses Marxist Criticism approach to answer the formulated problems. Besides, the researcher also uses biography and history behind the song in order to figure out the deeper intepretation of the song. There are also the theories of poetry which are related to the study. There are two conclusions of this study. The first is the literal meaning of the song which tells the reader to imagine the world without any border that may causing a war or conflict. The second conclusion of this study is the deeper meaning of the song in Marxist Perspective. The deeper meaning of the song reveals the class and power struggle between the powerful and powerless. Keywords : Imagine, literal meaning, deeper meaning, Marxist vi PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI ABSTRAK Setyoko, Albertus Adi. (2017). Kata kunci: Imagine, literal meaning, deeper meaning, Marxist. vii PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI DEDICATION PAGE I DEDICATED THIS PAPER TO MY FATHER, MY MOTHER, AND MY SISTER FOR THEIR ENDLESS SUPPORT, PRAYER, AND LOVE viii PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI THE DREAM YOU DREAM ALONE IS ONLY A DREAM. The background of the study provides some explanations and reasons in choosing the topic, investigated problems, the importance of the study and an overiew of the study strategy. The approach of the study consists of the approach that is used to answer the formulated problems in the study. A. Background of the Study Music cannot be separated from human’s life. Most people listen to music in their daily life. People tend to listen to the music because it has a lot of benefits such as lowering stress, reducing depression, improving health, increasing verbal intelligence, elevates our mood, strengthen learning and memory, and many more. Apart from that, another benefit of music is to express the feeling, experience, and thought as stated by Wordsword in Peck and Coyle (1984) that poetry is spontanious overflow of power feeling and expression of emotion.

JOHN LENNON: A MAN AND ARTIST UNFULFIILLED? Słowa kluczowe: kompleks, trauma, dominacja, „krzyk pierwotny”, gwiaz- dorstwo, artyzm, niespełnienie Summary: In this essay, the author attempts at a synthetic insight into the biography of John Lennon, both as a confused genius of popular music and a victim of the childhood complex of motherly neglect: later transformed into the one of female domination and transferred onto Yoko Ono, his second wife and avant-garde “muse.” Consequently, their marriage, largely idealized by media, is shown here in the context of Lennon’s relations with other women (mainly his mother and aunt Mimi), his contradictory psychological traits and artistic/ ideological evolution that resulted in being torn between pop superstardom, avant-garde artistry and, in last five years, virtual creative impotence.

COMMON PERSPECTIVES IN POST-COLONIAL INDIAN AND AFRICAN FICTION IN ENGLISH ABSTRACT THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE AWARD OF THE DEGREE OF Bottor of IN ENGLISH LITERATURE BY AMINA KISHORE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH ALIGARH MUSLIIVI UNIVERSITY ALIGARH 1995 Abstract The introduction of the special paper on Commonwealth Literature at the Post Graduate level and the paper called 'Novel other than British and American' at the Under Graduate level at AMU were the two major eventualities which led to this study. In the paper offered to the M A students, the grouping together of Literatures from atleast four of the Commonwealth nations into one paper was basically a makeshift arrangement. The objectives behind the formulation of such separate area as courses for special study remained vaguely described and therefore unjustified. The teacher and students, were both uncertain as to why and how to hold the disparate units together. The study emerges out of such immediate dilemma and it hopes to clarify certain problematic concerns related to the student of the Commonwealth Literature. Most Commonwealth criticism follows either (a) a justificatory approach; or (b) a confrontationist approach; In approach (a) usually a defensive stand is taken by local critics and a supportive non-critical, indulgent stand is adopted by the Western critic. In both cases, the issue of language use, nomenclature and the event cycle of colonial history are the routes by which the argument is moved. Approach (b) invariably adopts the Post-Colonial Discourse as its norm of presenting the argument. According to this approach, the commonness of Commonwealth Literatures emerges from the fact that all these Literatures have walked ••• through the fires of enslavement and therefore are anguished, embattled units of creative expression.

  • BEYOND IMITATION: the RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LITERATURE and SOCIAL REALITY AS IMPLIED in GEORG LUKÁCS's REFLECTION THEORY Dr
Global Journal of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Vol.5, No.4, pp.26-37, May 2017 ___Published by European Centre for Research Training and Development UK (www.eajournals.org) BEYOND IMITATION: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LITERATURE AND SOCIAL REALITY AS IMPLIED IN GEORG LUKÁCS'S REFLECTION THEORY Dr. Ahmad Mohammad Abd Al-Salam and Amal Galal Mohammad Morsy Department of English Language and Literature, Faculty of Arts, Fayoum University ABSTRACT: Reflection is not a new concept in literary criticism. However, this concept reached its dialectic perfection at the hand of the Marxist philosopher Georg Lukács (1885- 1971). Believing that Man is the focal point in every literary content, Lukács conceives Realism as the basis of all literary genres due to its significant role in solving Man's problems of alienation and the self- spilt caused by Capitalism, and it is, therefore, the best representation of his Reflection Theory. Reflection for Lukács is neither spontaneous nor photographic, but deliberate and conscious. In this process, the writer plays the role of the mediator between literature and the society. A great writer has, thus, to portray his characters and their struggle for self-realization objectively without imposing his political orientation. Through his typical characters and situations, the writer brings the reality in front of his readers' eyes so as to enable them to confront their troubles and think of change, and this is "intellectual and moral work" of the realist writer in Lukács's perspective. KEYWORDS: Reflection, Realism, Type, Totality, Reification. INTRODUCTION Georg [György] Lukács (1885-1971) was a Hungarian Marxist philosopher, literary historian, critic, an aesthetic theorist and one of the prominent and active Hungarian politicians, especially during the 1919 and 1956 Hungarian revolutions.

Inhuman Power: Infrastructural Modernism And The Fiction Of Social Form Abstract E.M. Forster’s imperative to “only connect” has long been read as modernist slogan for the rarefied depth of authentic interpersonal intimacy. Reframing the historical co-emergence of literary modernism and modern social science, this project tells a different story—not of connections between exceptional humans, but of connections between persons and environments. The prevailing canons of modernism have not yet grasped the internal complexity of early-twentieth-century debates regarding the interdependence of human and nonhuman agency. Early-twentieth-century sociologists like Émile Durkheim grounded both the autonomy of human culture and the disciplinary authority of sociology on the premise of species exceptionalism—the independence

  • On John Lennon's Music
“She Said She Said” – The Influence of "Feminine Voices" on John Lennon’s Music (1) John Lennon’s songs show the recurrent influence of female voices, and this can be shown by musicological comparisons of Lennon compositions with earlier songs sung by women, which he was familiar with. Some of these resemblances have already been pointed out; others are discussed here for the first time. Although these influences featured throughout Lennon’s work, we will focus on the early Beatles (1958-1963), and how specific songs, mostly US R&B, influenced Lennon’s songwriting (he wrote in partnership with Paul McCartney, but it is possible to establish the balance of their contributions by reference to secondary literature, eg Miles 1997, Sheff and Golson 1982, MacDonald 2005). (2) In the period 1958-1963 the Beatles developed from a covers band into the most famous popular music group in the world. The group were constantly listening for new material (they had a huge repertoire of covers), and were absorbing and experimenting with different musical styles in response to increasingly feminised audiences. They initially saw their songwriting as addressing a primarily female audience (Lewisohn 2013). Moreover, almost all the works featuring woman’s voices identified in Lennon’s work come from this period. (3) Lennon, by most accounts, was the “macho” Beatle and was occasionally violent towards women, so it seems surprising that he led the way in covering and borrowing from songs sung by women, most particularly, early 60s US girl-groups such as The Shirelles, the Marvelettes and The Cookies. (4) Most accounts of the Beatles' influences emphasise male artists such as Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry (Dafydd, Crampton 1996, 4; Gould 2007, 58–68).
