Tucson Masterworks Chorale | 3 TMC Spring 2021 Program Notes MISSA BREVIS

IN D MINOR

“There is peace even in the storm.” – Vincent Van Gogh

Tucson Masterworks Chorale is proud to present their spring virtual concert program, featuring Mozart’s Missa brevis in D minor and the world premiere of Lux Aeterna by Russell Ronnebaum. In the past year, our isolation has given us time for reflection: on the importance of our families and friends, our health, and our creative expression. This program shows that out of the storm of this past year, we may step into the light once again. The Missa brevis in D minor, K65 was written during a time of reflection for young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756- 1791). He had just returned to Salzburg from the first of many European performance tours. During his travels, he met Johann Christian Bach (1735-1782) and was exposed to many styles of composition from the Renaissance era onward. His Missa brevis incorporates the structure of mass settings found in Salzburg, but experiments with texture and chromaticism in a way that rebels from the norm. It is the third mass setting he composed, and the only missa brevis written in a minor key – the same key, incidentally, as his unfinishedRequiem . The work was originally set for SATB soloists, SATB chorus, two violins, cello, organ, and three trombones that double the alto, tenor, and bass chorus parts. For this virtual compilation, we have chosen to omit the trombones. The “Kyrie” opens with a solemn choral introduction contrasted with a faster ABA’ form alternating between chorus and soloists. The “Gloria” and “Credo” likewise alternate in

Tucson Masterworks Chorale | 4 texture between chorus and soloists, and feature fugal imitation to close the movement. The “Sanctus” movement, despite its brevity, contains several transitions of tempo and meter, most notably the rhythmic “Hosanna.” Like the “Kyrie,” the “Agnus Dei” opens with a stately introduction, but ends in a light, dance-like “dona nobis pacem.” Tucson Masterworks Chorale has the good fortune of an extended relationship with Russell Ronnebaum, Pianist and Composer. TMC is delighted with the opportunity to premiere his composition, Lux Aeterna. The text for Lux Aeterna comes from the Catholic liturgy of the Requiem Mass, or Mass of the Dead. The thought of eternal light is a beautiful concept to behold. No one knows what happens after we pass away, but it’s comforting to think that when that day comes, we’ll be met with a peaceful rest, infinite blessings, and boundless love. This composition attempts to capture the visual and descriptive nature of eternal light. The first stanza of “Let perpetual light…” begins peacefully before building into the middle of the piece, where the singers plead “Grant them eternal rest, O Lord”. The conclusion returns to the original meditative state of praying for “perpetual light to shine upon them”. TMC and its artistic staff hope that this virtual concert can reach our friends and family in Tucson and beyond. While we are apart from each other for now, know that you are always in our thoughts, and we will keep singing in the hope of seeing each other face-to-face soon.

Tucson Masterworks Chorale | 19 ABOUT THE CHORALE The Tucson Masterworks Chorale is the oldest independent choral arts organization in southern Arizona. It began in 1949 as a group of 18 singers, with Governor Samuel Goddard as its first president. Now celebrating its 72nd year, the Chorale continues to refine its performances of the great masterworks of choral literature, from pre-Baroque to contemporary, many with orchestral accompaniment. Past performances have included the chorale’s participation in the “Rolling Requiem” project, a world-wide acknowledgement of the events of 9/11/01 performed on September 11, 2002; a performance at Carnegie Hall in 2003; and recent collaborations with other groups singing in Varna and Sofia, Bulgaria. In 2014, Tucson Masterworks Chorale was again invited to sing in New York, this time at Lincoln Center, where members performed Duruflé’s Requiem under the baton of Dr. Bruce Chamberlain. In July of 2019, twenty five Chorale members and friends joined with other community choruses in The Jubilate Mozart Festival Concert sung in the Salzburg Dom in Austria. The Chorale members also performed with a smaller ensemble from Westchester County, N.Y., in a performance at The Melk Abbey near Vienna. Our Mission Tucson Masterworks Chorale is southern Arizona’s leading community chorus, now in its 72nd year. We strive to make the great masterworks of choral literature, from pre-Baroque to contemporary, accessible to singers and audience members from all walks of life. We endeavor to grow musically and to encourage cultural participation in our community. We are a Section 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, governed by a volunteer board of directors.
