Is music an antidote to the city or is the city itself music? Luigi Russolo, writing in 1913, in Milan said [1]: ‘Let us wander through a great modern city with our ears more alert than our eyes, and enjoy distinguishing between the sounds of water, air, or gas in metal pipes, the purring of motors which breathe and pulsate with indisputable animalism, the throbbing of valves, pounding of pistons, screeching of gears, clatter of street cars on their rails, cracking of whips, flapping of awnings and flags. We shall enjoy fabricating the mental orchestrations of the banging of shop shutters, the slamming of doors, the hustle and bustle of crowds, the din of railroad stations, foundries, spinning mills, printing presses, electric power stations, and underground railways. Nor should the newest noises of war be forgotten… We want to give pitches to these diverse noises, regulating them harmonically and rhythmically…. Every noise has a pitch, some even a chord, which predominates among the whole of its irregular vibrations’ He identified six families of noises: - Roars, thunderings, explosions, hissing roars, bangs, booms - Whistling, hissing, puffing - Whispers, murmurs, mumbling, muttering, gurgling - Screeching, creaking, rustling, humming, crackling, rubbing - Beating on: metals, woods, skins, stones, pottery, etc. - Voices of animals and people: shouts, screams, shrieks, wails, hoots, howls, death rattles, sobs. He then built an orchestra of machines to reproduce these sounds on stage, mostly by turning handles. In 1914 he toured the major capitals of Europe, meeting Stravinsky in Paris and performing at the London Palladium until his show was cut short by the beginning of the Great War. A century later, musical performance includes voicing, beating and screeching, and the audience whispering, whistling, beating, and only occasionally roaring thunder or explosions.
