Den Anlaß zur Entstehung dieses Buches gab meine Doktor- arbeit an der hiesigen Universität, und mit Genehmigung der philosophischen Fakultät ist das Kapitel „Literatur- und Lebens- geschichtliches " (S. 105— 149) als Inauguraldissertation gedruckt worden. Die Einleitung enthält die inneren Gründe für die Notwendigkeit der Neuherausgabe des bisher unzugänglichen Jugendwerkes unseres großen Schlesiers Andreas Gryphius. Es darf auch als Pflicht der Forschung der deutschen Literaturgeschichte angesehen werden, selbst die lateinischen Werke solcher Dichter ans Licht zu ziehen, die sich auf dem deutschen Parnaß einen dauernden Sitz erworben haben. In diesem Sinne schreibt z. B. Goethe am 10. April 1819 an Blumenthal, „daß der Deutsche auch in fremden Formen und Sprachen sich selbst gleich bleibt, seinem Charakter und Talent überall Ehre macht" (vgl. Goethe-Jahrbuch II, 284). Zugleich dient die Eigenart der Epen, einer Schülerarbeit von Gryphius, zu neuer Beleuchtung seines erstaunlichen Dichtertalentes, wie die daran angeknüpfte Untersuchung einen Beitrag zur Ge- schichte des Unterrichtswesens an unseren höheren Schulen im 17. Jahrhundert, eine Illustration des Geisteslebens in dieser Zeit überhaupt, zu liefern vermag. Weiteres über die Beschaffen- heit des Werkes und die Grundsätze der Neuherausgabe findet sich auf S. 105 —108 dieses Buches. Herrn Prof. Dr. Max Koch gebührt für die Anregung zu dieser Arbeit mein größter Dank, nächst ihm Herrn Prof. Dr. Franz Skutsch. Der Zauber des Weihnachtsfestes ^) hat nach neuerer For- schung entschiedener noch als die Osterfeier die Anfänge des Dramas in Deutschland hervorgerufen und der Dichtkunst ver- schiedener Jahrhunderte als Stoff gedient. Besonders seit Wein- holds Buch über die Weihnachtsspiele hat die literarische Forschung diesem Dramenkreise wachsende Aufmerksamkeit zugewendet. Wie eng die Kindheitsgeschichte Jesu mit der Person des jüdischen Machthabers Herodes in Verbindung gebracht wurde, zeigen nicht bloß die Bibel und die alten Volksspiele. Noch einer unserer größten modernen Bühnendichter, Friedrich Hebbel, hat sich die Gelegenheit, diesen Zusammenhang in „Herodes und Mariamne" dramatisch wirkungsvoll zu gestalten, nicht entgehen lassen. Und so wird durch die feste Einbürgerung seines Trauerspiels in den Spielplan unserer Bühnen und den tiefen Eindruck, wie wir z. B. gerade hier in Breslau durch die poetische und künstlerisch ver- tiefte Wiedergabe von Mariamne und Herodes durch Martha Santen und Ernst Wendt erlebt haben, die Teilnahme an dem alten Stoffe auch von der Bühne her wieder aufgefrischt, wenn auch in Hebbels Drama wenigstens für die oberflächliche Betrach- tung der religiöse Standpunkt der alten Spiele vor der Teilnahme an dem eigenartigen Charakter des Königs und seinem Verhalten gegen seine über alle Maßen schöne Gemahlin zurücktritt. Mußte aber die dichterische Verwertung der vom jüdischen Geschicht- schreiber Josephus gebotenen Quelle dieses Stoffes in verschie- denen Zeiten auch naturgemäß verschieden sein, so stellen sich trotz aller Wandlungen doch zwei Grundzüge heraus, auf welche *) Gustav Kawerau, Die Entstehung des Weihnachtsfestes, Kektor- rede. XIV Einleitung. die Beiirbeitungeii sich stützten: Herodes' blinde, unwürdige Eifer- sucht und mißtrauische Herrscherbegierde und Mariamnes Hin- richtung, die seinen verzweifelten, in blutiges Wüten gegen seine Umgebung ausartenden Schmerz verursacht. Das auf psycho- logischer Motivierung beruhende moderne Drama wird selbst- verständlich die Behandlung des ersten Zuges sich zur Haupt- aufgabe machen, die das Äußerliche hervorkehrende Dichtung früherer Zeiten, besonders des 17. Jahrhunderts, die andere Seite. Hier entscheidet der Geist der Zeit. Dieser soll, soweit er für die Beurteilung der vorliegenden Jugenddichtung des Ai^dreas Gryphius in Betracht kommt, kurz skizziert werden. Die Ent- hüllung des ersten Werkes eines jungen Dichters bietet an sich schon in höherem Grade die Gewähr, in unbefangener Weise den Ausdruck des Zeitgeistes zu offenbaren,

    Abstracts ASCS 37 Drunk with Blood: The Role of Platonic Baccheia in Lucan and Statius Eva Anagnostou-Laoutides Monash University [email protected] This paper argues that Lucan and Statius employed the motif of getting drunk with blood influenced by Plato’s use of inebriation as a means of transcending reason and transforming one’s consciousness. In his Dialogues Plato notably presents Socrates’ philosophic frenzy as Dionysian inebriation (Symp. 218b; cf. Phdr. 249e). In their epics, lamenting the disastrous Roman civil wars, Lucan and Statius employ drunkenness as a metaphor for political ambition, describing their protagonists as fighting in a Bacchic arena, like wild animals getting drunk with blood. The paper starts with the popularity of Plato and Platonist authors, such as Plutarch, under the Roman Empire when withstanding tyranny and dying virtuously became anew a topic of philosophical debate (Roskam 2002; Desmond 2011: 61-8). Lucan and Statius’ familiarity with the Platonic corpus (Tracy 2011: 10) further implies that both authors appreciated the similarities between Plato’s politically volatile period and the reign of Nero who led to Lucan’s premature death. Yet, death offers according to Plato, an ideal situation where, devoid of our bodily substance, we are urged to think about virtue (Resp. 3.386b-10.610a-b; 611d-c). Statius explores this idea when relating the adventures of Amphiaraus, Apollo’s priest, in Thebaid, bk8: lured by a false ideal of manhood Amphiaraus, now a devotee of Bacchus, kills many before being transported to the Underworld alive.     Divine Riddles: A Sourcebook for Greek and Roman Mythology March, 2014 E. Edward Garvin, Editor What follows is a collection of excerpts from Greek literary sources in translation. The intent is to give students an overview of Greek mythology as expressed by the Greeks themselves. But any such collection is inherently flawed: the process of selection and abridgement produces a falsehood because both the narrative and meta-narrative are destroyed when the continuity of the composition is interrupted. Nevertheless, this seems the most expedient way to expose students to a wide range of primary source information. I have tried to keep my voice out of it as much as possible and will intervene as editor (in this Times New Roman font) only to give background or exegesis to the text. All of the texts in Goudy Old Style are excerpts from Greek or Latin texts (primary sources) that have been translated into English. Ancient Texts In the field of Classics, we refer to texts by Author, name of the book, book number, chapter number and line number.1 Every text, regardless of language, uses the same numbering system. Homer’s Iliad, for example, is divided into 24 books and the lines in each book are numbered. Hesiod’s Theogony is much shorter so no book divisions are necessary but the lines are numbered. Below is an example from Homer’s Iliad, Book One, showing the English translation on the left and the Greek original on the right. When citing this text we might say that Achilles is first mentioned by Homer in Iliad 1.7 (i.7 is also acceptable).

Aristophanes Frogs 142-3 The ‘myriads’, whilst grammatically associated in the first instance with the ‘most terrible beasts,’ is presumably to be read with the ‘snakes’ too. A hundred of these snakes at any rate can be accounted for in the form of the ‘hundred-headed’ (ἑκατογκέφαλος) Echidna, the ‘Viper’, which, the underworld warden and keeper of Cerberus, Aeacus, subsequently tells Heracles, will tear at his innards, in punishment for his former theft of the dog.2 In Apuleius’ tale of Cupid and Psyche, Psyche is directed by Venus to the banks of the Styx: Dextra laevaque cautibus cavatis proserpunt ecce longa colla porrecti saevi dracones inconivae vigiliae luminibus addictis et in perpetuam lucem pupulis excubantibus.

    The Unity of the "Seven Against Thebes" Otis, Brooks Greek, Roman and Byzantine Studies; Fall 1960; 3, 4; ProQuest pg. 153 The Unity of the Seven Against Thebes Brooks Otis THE OBVIOUS DIFFERENCE between the first (lines 1.-(52) and last (653-1004) parts of the Seven Against Thebes has been often discussed: yet the 'unity' or 'disunity' of the play is still in doubt. Two recent writers (Kitto, Harald Patzer)1 illustrate the persisting disagreement. Kitto sees in 655f the 'sudden revelation' of the 'other side of Eteocles, his hatred of his brother, his inability and his unwillingness to control his mood and fatalistic leap upon his doom.' Patzer sees in the same lines Eteocles' new understanding of what the gods ordain: the duel with Polynices, impious as in one sense it may be, is yet divinely decreed; he now sees he cannot evade it. Both reject the older communis opinio! (Wilamowitz, Mazon, Snell, Pohlenz, Schmid, Murray, Meautis) that interprets 653-719 as Eteocles' own fre~ decision to save the city and/or preserve his soldier's honor. In this article I want, first, to outline the present situation of criticism or scholarship on the play and to suggest the lines along which, in my view, a sane interpretation of its 'unity' is now pos­ sible.
