Their nation had amassed great wealth, their people seemed to be reproducing at unprece- dented and unmatched rates in the Western world, and, most notably, their capital city was the center of an empire unlike any the world had ever known. Such a remarkable ex- pansion of wealth and power necessitated not so much justification as explanation. The complex economic and political entity that was the British Empire became the focus of countless surveys and examinations, each offering a solution to its existence. But what- ever the true source of British imperial expansion, whether it be economic interests, po- litical structures, or social impulses, the most common reason given for the rise and pros- perity of Greater Britain was the inherent racial character of its people. These people, the Anglo-Saxon race, possessed all the traits necessary for successful colonization and im- perial rule. Great Britain, a relatively small group of islands in the North Atlantic, was home to a race destined, it seemed, to attain and to hold the dominant position on the planet. In light of this fact, or rather assumption, came a renewed interest in the origin or, in the words of one contemporary, "the genesis of the Anglo-Saxon race."1 In the origin of the race lay the secret of the empire, while in the strength of the blood rested its future. 1H. Chamberlain, "The Genesis of the Saxon Race," Overland Monthly 43 (January 1904): 70. 2 As the empire grew it exerted an increasing influence over the way in which the 'Anglo- Saxon' peoples, both at home and abroad, viewed themselves. That they were an 'imperial race' certainly could not be doubted; defining exactly who they were and where they came from, however, became critically important. If the race could be found to be 'imperially predestined' from its origin, either because of its racial characteristics, its en- dowment of Providential favor, or both, then the empire assumed a much higher, indeed almost unassailable, legitimacy. 2 In this way, the existence of the empire fundamentally effected the search for and definition of British origins and identity. This is not a study of the growth of the British Empire per se, as it will neither de- tail the expansion of British influence nor attempt to discover its underlying reasons or consequences.3 It is, rather, an examination of one way in which the imperial experience shaped the way the British viewed themselves. It will assess British racial identity during the decades around the tum of the century, especially as that identity resulted from the images and reality of imperial expansion. Specifically under consideration will be the British-Israel movement, since it represented not only the apotheosis of this type of iden- tity but also fully reflected much imperial discourse otherwise considered 'mainstream.' God had promised Abraham and his descendants that they would inherit the earth and come into a place among nations that the British now indisputably occupied. To doubt the validity of this covenant was to doubt the faithfulness of God. The Anglo-Saxon race was the recipient of the Abrahamic promises, therefore, not because it had somehow deposed the Hebrews of their rightful inheritance but in that it had descended from the chosen people, the children of Israel. God's covenant blessings had not been transferred, British-Israelites confidently pro- claimed, but rather had simply remained unfulfilled until the present day. In the forbears of the Anglo-Saxon, the Hebrews of the Kingdom of Israel, the explanation for empire was found. Being racial Israelites Anglo-Saxons could claim to be the rightful inheritors of the earth. The origins of the race, as set forth by this movement, both defined the people and explained the empire. As the nineteenth century drew to a close and British dominance seemed increasingly permanent,4 the quest for origins, particularly racial ori- gins, became a powerful dynamic in the formation of British identity. It is this dynamic that is under investigation here. 4Faith in the continued dominance of the British Empire, despite numerous signs to the contrary, is explored in Francis G. Friedberg, The Weary Titan: Britain and the Expe­ rience of Relative Decline, 1895-1905 (Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1988). 4 Historical assessments of British national identity have tended to focus upon the internal cultural aspects of a nation, such as religious confessionalization, literature, Ian- guage, and art as the prime movers in the identity-formation process.5 Certainly a na- ti on' s internal culture is instrumental in any sense of self which that nation develops. A people's external activities, however, including expansion, have begun to be examined as potent factors in the ways in which the people of any nation come to view themselves. At the forefront of this investigation have been those scholars, particularly literary theorists, who attempt to bridge the gap between 'internally' and 'externally' generated identity by studying the interaction between a nation's culture and its imperial thought and activity.6 While such studies have been helpful, they tend to base their conclusions more on theory 5See for example: Mary J.

Brisby; 4-6-2002 This afternoon, brethren, we want to start to wind down this rather long series that I've been completing on number sixteen of the Fundamentals of Belief of the Church of God, The Eternal. As you know, this is the fundamental that relates primarily to the topic we call British Israelism. It was one of those fundamental teachings that Mr. Armstrong did confirm as a means for us to understand the way to put into perspective many of the prophecies that are written within the Bible. Mr. Armstrong called it a key to understanding Biblical prophecy. As I've repeated a number of times during the last seven sermons, that is not to be confused with thinking that it is the most important doctrine of the Church. It certainly is not. Herbert Armstrong certainly did not originate the understanding of the topic of the lost tribes of Israel and the role of the United States, the British Commonwealth and the other democracies of Northwestern Europe as those descendants of the ancient Israelites. That was not new information, but Mr. Armstrong certainly capitalized upon it because God led him to understand that it was indeed true. Therefore, it had significance for us in understanding the context of many of the Biblical prophecies concerning Israel, both in ancient times and, most importantly, in the last days. So it did become a key. It opened up much understanding to us. So we've gone through in a synoptic fashion, and yet it's taken a number of sermons to cover the details of our understanding from the Bible of that which God promised through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David, and a certification that God did indeed fulfill His promises to those patriarchs, which is the main purpose for which I have spent so much time on this topic.

    1 The Political Influence of the British-Israel Movement in the Nineteenth Century. Richard Simpson, Victorian Studies 30th September, 2002. Introduction On 9th December 1917, Jerusalem fell to the British and in an interview with the Evening Standard, in 1920, Max Nordau, cofounder of the Zionist Movement, in 1897, held ‘we thought that the Messiah would be an individual, but I feel now as if it were a collective entity, and that its name might be the British Nation’.1 This one statement vindicated just under 80 years of campaigning for the British-Israel movement, not an Anglo-Jewish organisation as one might expect but a movement that believed the British were the “chosen race”, not the Jews and believed the return to Palestine of the British and Jews together would bring about the Second Coming. Despite the plethora of primary documentation, very little has been written on the role of this movement in the nineteenth century. Throughout Anglo-Zionist literature and biographies of great Victorian statesmen there is little or no mention of this movement, which according to the Jewish Encyclopedia (1901) had over 2 million adherents. Despite an extensive press and books, they didn’t quite make it into mainstream politics as an organisation, However, some of their members were very influential and included some of the Royal Family. From their literal interpretation of Hebrew scripture within an predominantly Anglican umbrella, they certainly thought they knew where the country was going so perhaps that took away their incentive for power. What I have tried to do in this long essay is to assess from a snapshot of 19th century British-Israel publications how they reacted to and tried to influence the political world.

We are engaged upon a great combat, and need to seek the companionship of those of similar mind. Such help can be found in the various extracts from the writings of valiant war- riors of the past, both brethren and sisters, who have laboured on the field of battle for the things they believed. Paul instructed the Corinthians: "The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of stron- gholds: casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exal- teth itself against God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ" (2 Cor. 10:4-5). He shows that there is not only a need to "rightly divide the Word of Truth" but to recognise the power of the enemy, felt in the natural mind. As a mighty war- rior, the apostle felt the unrelenting contest: "I delight in the law of God after the inward man: but I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members" (Rom. 7:22-23). It was an engagement that continued to the last moment, when he said: "I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course" (2 Tim. 4:7). But that same warfare must be undertaken by those who would honour the Truth.

    Racist Apocalypse: Millennialism on the Far Right Michael Barkun For the last quarter-century, America has been saturated with apocalyptic themes. Indeed, not since the 1830sand '40s haveso many visions oftheendbeen disseminated to so wide an audience.1 Current apocalyptic scenarios range from secular forecasts of nuclear war and environmental collapse, articulated by Robert Heilbroner and others, to the Biblically-based premillennialism of Hal Lindsey and Jerry Falwell.2 While the former have spread widely among secular intellectuals, and the latter among a large fundamentalist audience, they do not exhaust America's preoccupation with the end of history. There are other future visions, neither so respectable nor so widely held, at the fringes of American religious and political discourse. While these outer reaches of the American mind are filled with many complex growths, my concern here is with one form the fringe apocalypse has taken, as part of the ideology of the racist right. These are the groups customarily referred to in the media as "white supremacist" and "neo-Nazi." While they are uniformly committed to doctrines of racial superiority and are often open admirers of the Third Reich, to categorize them merely as "white supremacist" or "neo-Nazi" is simplistic, for these organizations bear little resemblance to earlier American fringe-right manifestations.3 The groups most representative of the new tendencies include Aryan Nations in Hayden Lake, Idaho; the now-defunct Covenant, Sword and Arm of the Lord, whose fortified community was located near Pontiac, Missouri, until 1985; and most elements of the Ku Klux Klan and Posse Comitatus.
