Christopher Breu is Professor of English at Illinois State University, USA. Introduction: Globalization and the State in Contemporary Crime Fiction Andrew Pepper and David Schmid The production, circulation, and translation of crime fi ction, from the genre’s roots in the criminal stories circulating in London and Paris from the early eighteenth century (Pepper 2016), has always been an inherently transnational phenomenon. But it is also true that, despite the genre’s long-standing transnational dimensions, it is only in the last twenty years or so that crime fi ction has really mushroomed beyond the familiar scenes of its foundational texts (e.g., London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles), to become a truly global literary genre. Indigenous crime fi ction cultures are now emerging from, and speaking to, their own sites of production and, aided by the globalization of the literary marketplace and a new emphasis on translation, traveling to all corners of the globe to the extent that we can now arguably describe crime fi ction as a world literature par excellence (see King). But to make good on such a claim we need to do more than focus on the proliferation of crime fi ction cultures in an ever-expanding list A.

The thesis thus develops an understanding of the book market and its actants that deliberately resists static or linear perspectives, acknowledging the centrality of complex interaction and dynamic development to the analysis of publishing histories of translated books. The theoretical component is complemented by case studies offering empirical insight into the model’s application. Each case study illuminates the theory from a different angle, creating thereby a composite picture of the complex, essentially unmappable processes that underlie the logic of the book market. The first takes as its subject the British publishing history of crime writer Liza Marklund, as well as its wider context, the Scandinavian crime boom.

Abstract This thesis examines written, audio-visual and musical representations of real-life British serial killers Myra Hindley and Ian Brady (the ‘Moors Murderers’) and Peter Sutcliffe (the ‘Yorkshire Ripper’), from the time of their crimes to the present day, and their proliferation beyond the cases’ immediate historical-legal context. Through the theoretical construct ‘Northientalism’ I interrogate such representations’ replication and engagement of stereotypes and anxieties accruing to the figure of the white working- class ‘Northern’ subject in these cases, within a broader context of pre-existing historical trajectories and generic conventions of Northern and true crime representation. Interrogating changing perceptions of the cultural functions and meanings of murderers in late-capitalist socio-cultural history, I argue that the underlying structure of true crime is the counterbalance between the exceptional and the everyday, in service of which its second crucial structuring technique – the depiction of physical detail – operates.

Using bricolage as a theoretical hub, an analysis is made of hegemonic masculinity at work in the film 1974 (produced by Channel Four and Screen Yorkshire in 2005) based on the first of the novels from David Peace’s Red Riding quartet. An ex- amination of three of the film’s characters—a “young turk” journalist, an old- school Detective Inspector, and a criminal entrepreneur—and the ways in which they are drawn together in a plot which centres on violence and corruption, provides examples of the adaptive nature of hegemonic masculinity and the centrality of power and violence to this concept. The value of examin- ing the past in relation to the present is also addressed.
