    MaMoni Integrated Safe Motherhood, Newborn Care, Family Planning Project Dilara Begum of Turong village, Companiganj, Sylhet, gave birth to a baby girl in 2010 who did not move or breathe. The village doctor declared her dead. Thanks to MaMoni’s health promotion activities through community health workers, the local traditional birth attendant was able to revive this beautiful girl, Takmina Begum, who will turn four early next year.   • Inventory of LGED Road Network, March 2005, Bangladesh
    The Chief Engineer Local Government Engineering Department PREFACE It is a matter of satisfaction that LGED Road Database has been published through compilation of data that represent all relevant information of rural road network of the country in a structured manner. The Rural Infrastructure Maintenance Management Unit of LGED (former Rural Infrastructure Maintenance Cell) took up the initiative to create a road inventory database in mid nineties to register all of its road assets country-wide with the help of customized software called, Road and Structure Database Management System. The said database was designed to accommodate all relevant information on the road network sequentially and the system was upgraded from time to time to cater the growing needs. In general, the purpose of this database is to use it in planning and management of LGED's rural road network by providing detailed information on roads and structures. In particular, from maintenance point of view this helps to draw up comprehensive maintenance program including rational allocation of fund based on various parameters and physical condition of the road network. According to recent road re-classification, LGED is responsible for construction, development and maintenance of three classes of roads, which has been named as Upazila Road, Union Road and Village Road (category A & B) in association with Local Government Institution. The basic information about these roads like, road name, road type, length, surface type, condition, structure number with span, existing gaps with length, etc. has been made available in the road inventory. Side by side, corresponding spatial data are also provided in the road map comprising this document.

Mahabub-Ul-Anwar, MSS, MPS The Population Council, Dhaka, Bangladesh ABSTRACT The maternal mortality ratio (322) is comparatively high in Bangladesh. The utilization of maternity care provided by trained professionals during and after delivery is alarmingly low in Bangladesh. The overall objective of this operations research project was to test the feasibility and effectiveness of introducing financial support (voucher scheme) for poor rural women to improve utilization of ANC, delivery and PNC from trained service providers. A quasi-experimental pretest – posttest design was utilized. A total 436 women were interviewed before and 414 after the intervention to evaluate the impact of interventions. In-depth interviews were conducted with users and non-users of voucher. Findings suggest that institutional deliveries have increased from 2.3 percent to 18 percent. Utilization of antenatal care from trained providers has increased from 54 percent to 100 percent. Similarly, number of women attending postnatal care services from trained providers also has increased from 22 percent to 60 percent.     Inland Navigation and Integrated Water Resources Management ABOUT THE AUTHORS Maminul Haque Sarker received his graduation in civil engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He did his Masters in Hydraulic Engineering (1996) from IHE, Delft, the Netherlands and PhD (2009) from School of Geography, University of Nottingham, UK. He worked at Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) for 12 years (1981 to 1993); he joined the Center for Environmental and Geographic Services (CEGIS) in 1997. Most of his professional life is spent in working with the river morphology. He has several publications in different journals, books and conference proceedings. Shampa, the youngest author of this book has grown up seeing the capricious behaviour of Ganges- Brahmputra-Meghna which made her enthusiastic in Water Engineering and consciously she received her graduation from BUET (2011). After successful completion of graduation, she has joined Center for Environmental and Geographic Services (CEGIS). She has some publications in different national and international journals and conferences proceedings. R.M. Nair was Member (Technical) of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) in the Ministry of Shipping from 1995 to 2005. He has been instrumental in formulating major policy initiatives in the Indian Inland Water Transport (IWT) Sector, including the IWT Action Plan (1994), and the IWT Vision 2020 (1998), both of which contributed to the Government of India IWT Policy of 2001. He is a member of the Sub-Group on IWT of the National Transport Development Policy Committee (NTDPC). He is a graduate from the University of Kerala and a specialist in hydrography from the National Institute of Hydrography, Goa.
