It was produced during a time of enormous personal stress. The balancing act of holding together the countless individual components, together with coping with the volatility of the technology, often bordered on the overwhelming. In the end the task was made possible through the unerring reliability of my research assistants, the generosity of the numerous contributors and the no-nonsense and speedy professionalism of the publisher. Most of all I am indebted to my husband David Askew, who in the face of very serious illness, committed grumpily to endless hours of Web searching and laborious proofreading well beyond the call of any research assistant on the market. 7 BEYOND BABEL LANGUAGE LEARNING ONLINE 5 About this book Rationale This book follows on from Virtual Language Learning: Finding the Gems Amongst the Pebbles published late in 1998. While it updates some of the information in the earlier book Part 2 provides a variety of example language sites in an expanded set of categories this work is essentially a new book that provides information about the development of online resources for language learning, practical examples across a large variety of approaches and results of research into student responses to this form of learning. Two new parts have been added. Part 1 includes a series of contributions exploring the development of specific language resources on the World Wide Web in a large variety of settings and approaches. Part 3 presents a substantial body of new research into students' perceptions of the environment and the relative influence of learning strategies, learning styles, study preference and gender. Presented in jargon-free language, the emphasis is on what can be done with few resources and relatively little expertise. The information is intended to be relevant to teachers of all languages in all sectors of the education system. Audience In preparing this book we had several groups of readers in mind: Teachers who wish to develop their own courses or materials on the World Wide Web. Part 1 provides a peer perspective on how resources might be developed and Part 2 includes a large number of examples of approaches to the task. This latter section is not intended as a training manual but rather as a first port of call for novice developers. The major rationale here is to discourage the reinvention of the wheel and to encourage global cooperation. In many cases desired materials may already exist, so there should be more to gain from developing complementary resources than duplicating what is already available. 8 BEYOND BABEL LANGUAGE LEARNING ONLINE 7 Teachers who wish to integrate interesting Web sites and ideas into their curriculum.

    Theatre Women Text - Helen Jamieson Helen Jamieson From Paper and Ink to Pixels and Links Something is happening to text: letters, words and whole sentences are lifting off the page and flying through cyber- space. The security and permanence of the printed word has given way to text as an interactive and changeable medium. We copy and paste, publish and update our writing on the internet, travel by hyperlink and meet in chat rooms. The digital age is changing the way we create, manipulate and interpret text. It is opening up new environments for inter- action between creators, performers and audience - on the web, CD-ROM and via email. These creative tools are not without oppressive male canon or traditions; however, here women are pioneers, coining new terms and making up the rules as we go. I was asked to write an article about how the internet and new "virtual" worlds were influencing text in relation to theatre and women - a very broad starting point. As soon as I began to research and write, I found myself, in true hypertext style, racing along distractingly fascinating side-roads and realising that (despite my role as the Magdalena Project's Web Queen) I had only been aware of a tiny piece of the action. So, rather than attempt to make any definitive statement about where all this text is flying off to and what it all means, I have chosen to swing a follow-spot across the digital stage and illuminate the work of a number of women.     PRESENTING THE SELF IN CYBERSPACE: IDENTITY PLAY IN MOOS Andrea Chester Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January, 2004 Department of Psychology The University of Melbourne Abstract The use of the Internet has increased exponentially over the last decade. Individuals across all continents are progressively engaging in cyberspace interactions at work, in education, and for leisure. These online interactions, unconstrained by the limitations of corporeal reality, offer the potential for unique presentations of the self. The general aim of the research described in this thesis was to examine self‐presentation in cyberspace. The research focused on MOOs, multi‐user, text‐based, user‐extensible online environments, as a likely site for identity experimentation and play in cyberspace. Two studies are described. In the first quantitative study, 75 university students logged on to the front page of a social MOO where they selected a screen name, chose their gender, and provided a character description. As hypothesised, self‐presentations were more likely to be based on actual identity rather than hoped for or feared selves. Contrary to expectation, little evidence was found of gender play. Self‐presentations were typically positively biased and results suggested that players also perceived themselves more positively in the online context. Although sex and age were generally unrelated to self‐presentation strategies, previous online experience, ethnicity, and personality profiles helped to explain self‐presentation behaviour. A qualitative study of a further 20 students in an educational MOO explored players’ understanding of their initial self‐presentational choices and their management of these self‐presentations over a 12‐week period.

    Cyberformance? Digital or Networked Performance? Cybertheaters? Or Virtual Theatres? …or all of the above? By Maria Chatzichristodoulou 1. Introduction: Links to the Past. We think of cyberformance or digital performance, as a field of practice that emerged with the advent of digital technologies; but this is not the case in art historical terms. I will start with introducing the term ‘cybertheatre’, not because I think it’s more accurate than the other terms employed to describe the practices we’ll be talking about today, but because, having been asked to introduce this symposium, I feel it’s important to make a direct link with the genre’s cultural antecedents, and to acknowledge its grounding within art histories and lineages. The term Cybertheater is credited to the Russian kinetic arts group Dvizjenije (which means Motion or Movement). Dvizjenije was an interdisciplinary team that, inspired by the ‘cosmic’ ideas of the Malevich tradition, was concerned with constructivism and kinetic art. They created work across the fields of visual arts, music, design, and education. Their piece Cybertheater (1967) was an immersive machinic environment that invited audiences to enter a world both virtual and physical, thus partaking in a communal sensual experience.     Cyberformance? Digital or Networked Performance? Cybertheaters? Virtual Theatres?... Or All of the Above? Dr. Maria Chatzichristodoulou The following article is the extended version of Maria Chatzichristodoulou’s introductory lecture that provided an art-historical context for the CyPosium. Steve Dixon, in the preface to his book Digital Performance (2007), acknowledges the problematic nature of the term, which is due to the wide-ranging applications of both its elements: ‘digital’ and ‘performance’. According to Dixon, “‘Digital’ has become a loose and generic term [...] and the term ‘performance’ has acquired wide-ranging applications and different nuances [...]”.1 Though the terms remain contested, there is no doubt that the last two decades have witnessed a proliferation of performance practices that unfold not in physical or proximal environments but online, in purpose-built platforms or appropriated virtual environments and worlds.
