FROM “WE SHALL OVERCOME” TO “FORTUNATE SON”: THE EVOLVING SOUND OF PROTEST An analysis on the changing nature of American protest music during the Sixties FLORIS VAN DER LAAN S1029781 MA North American Studies Supervisor: Frank Mehring 20 Augustus 2020 Thesis k Floris van der Laan - 2 Abstract Drawing on Denisoff’s theoretical framework - based on his analysis of the magnetic and rhetorical songs of persuasion - this thesis will examine how American protest music evolved during the Sixties (1960-1969). Songs of protest in relation to the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War gave a sound to the sociopolitical zeitgeist, critically addressing matters that were present throughout this decade. From the gentle sounds of folk to the dazzling melodies of rock, protest music became an essential cultural medium that inspired forms of collective thought. Ideas of critique and feelings of dissent were uniquely captured in protest songs, creating this intrinsic correlation between politics, music, and protest. Still, a clear changing nature can be identified whilst scrutinizing the musical phases and genres – specifically folk and rock - the Sixties went through. By taking a closer look on the cultural artifacts of protest songs, this work will try to demonstrate how American songs of protest developed during this decade, often affected by sociopolitical factors. From Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” to The Doors’ “The Unknown Soldier”, and from “Eve of Destruction” by Barry McGuire to “Superbird” by Country Joe and The Fish, a thorough analysis of protest music will be provided. On the basis of lyrics, melodies, and live performances, this thesis will discuss how protest songs reflected the mood of the times, and provided an ever-evolving destabilizing force that continuously adjusted to its social and political surroundings.

  • Los Angeles Times “Back from the Brink” [Steve Hochman] (1999)
Back From the Brink : With 'Spider,' Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse returns from a life- threatening episode. Pop Music March 21, 1999|STEVE HOCHMAN | Steve Hochman writes regularly for Calendar Mark Linkous would never write a song with a subject as trite as getting back on his own two feet. That particular struggle is all too real for him. The release of "Good Morning Spider," the second album he's made under the band name Sparklehorse, and a tour that brings him to the Troubadour on Friday are just the latest steps in rebuilding his life and career after a nightmare. Two years ago, the Virginia-based musician was basking in the acclaim for "vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot," the first Sparklehorse album. It was being hailed in particular in Britain, where the press fell for the haunting mix of low-fi rural rock, dream-time pop and inward-looking imagery. Among his fans: the band Radiohead, which offered him the opening slot on most of its European shows in 1996 and 1997. In January 1997, though, everything came crashing down in a London hotel bathroom. "I had a big bottle of Valium from Mexico and had been on antidepressants for a long time," says Linkous, 34, with flat detachment--as if he doesn't remember the incident but has heard others describe it. "And I guess I'd been taking the Valium so much that I passed out. My legs were underneath me all night and half a day. When the paramedics came and straightened my legs out, it sent all the toxins to my heart and gave me a heart attack.

  • Swordfishtrombones Revisited
Swordfishtrombones Revisited Start time: 8pm Approximate running time one hour 30 minutes, no interval Please note all timings are approximate and subject to change David Sheppard talks to David Coulter about discovering a spirit of adventure through Swordfishtrombones. At the dawn of the 1980s, Tom Waits was in danger of sliding into terminal self-parody. While his songs were covered by everyone form The Eagles to Bruce Springsteen, Waits, who had just turned 30, seemed stuck in an artistic rut, his albums delivering a cocktail of retro styles: afterhours burlesques, Beat poet reveries, jazzy stomps and string-laden ballads, all of them rendered in the grizzled cartoon baritone of a heavy-smoking soak at least twice his age. Despite 1980’s Heart Attack & Vine, the sixth and last of his albums for Elektra/Asylum, winning critical plaudits, Waits was growing jaded, holed up in West Hollywood’s sybaritic Tropicana Hotel, still peopling his songs with lonely, hard-boiled characters apparently on loan from desolate Edward Hopper paintings or the novels of Dashiell Hammett. While elsewhere punk’s youthful new broom was gleefully sweeping away the old, Waits remained a goateed, trilby-hatted anachronism, a wilful throwback to a sentimentalised, pre-rock’n’roll America. ‘I used to think I was making movies for the ears… I was overly maudlin and romantic’, he later admitted. Happily, artistic deliverance would soon arrive courtesy of another kind of ‘movie for the ears’ – namely a commission from Francis Ford Coppola to write a ‘lounge operetta’ score for the director’s ambitious cine-musical, One From the Heart.
