  • Results of the 2007 New Jersey General Elections
Results of the 2007 New Jersey General Elections On Tuesday, November 6, 2007, New Jersey voters went to the polls to select all 120 seats in the Legislature. Yesterday’s general election altered the current make-up (50-30) of the State Assembly and the Senate (22-18). The Democrats retain control of both houses. The new make-up of the Assembly will be 48-32 and the Senate will be 23-17. After a lame duck session which begins on November 8, 2007, the new members of the Legislature will be sworn in on January 8, 2008. Efforts to resolve leadership in both houses will take place this week. Strong signals are that Senate President Dick Codey (D) will remain in his current leadership role with Joe Vitale, Paul Sarlo and Steve Sweeney vying for majority leader and budget committee chairman respectively in the upcoming Senate leadership election. Senate Minority Leader Leonard Lance (R) is reportedly going to forgo his leadership role in favor of Senator Tom Kean, Jr. (R) with Lance potentially to take over as the ranking Republican member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee. Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts (D) will retain his Speakership, backed up by current Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman. Minority Leader Alex DeCroce (R) is expected to retain his Assembly Minority Leader position. We will keep you apprised as to the final decisions on leadership. With a few notable exceptions, all incumbent legislators defeated their general election challengers. The following is a breakdown of the election results from the targeted districts – which are usually the most publicized, contentious and expensive campaigns in the State: District 1 (Atlantic/Cape May/Cumberland) – This split district has now gone to the Democrats with the election of incumbent Assemblyman Jeff Van Drew (D), who defeated incumbent Senator Nick Asselta (R) for the Senate seat by a 56-44 percent margin.

APPENDIX ~--~~.~~~~~~ EAGLETON INSTITUTE OF POLITICS Presentation to the Clean Elections Commission on the Proposed Work of the NJ Clean Elections Academic Study Group June 17, 2005 by Ingrid W. Reed Director, Eagleton NJ Project Backjp'ound On April 8, 2005, a group of faculty members from various institutions of higher education whos1~ work includes a focus on New Jersey politics met at the Eagleton Institute for the purpose of discussing whether there were ways they might be useful to the recently-formed Clean Elections Commission which is charged to evaluate the pilot project providing public funding for two kgislative districts in the 2005 election. The focus of the meeting was on the purposes set out in New Jersey law creating the Clean Electi Jns pilot project: -Address the fact that residents of the State believe large contributions to campaigns have undue influence, and · · -That the political process is dominated by those who can afford to spend large amounts· of money on campaigns, and - -The result is an erosion of public confidence in the democratic process. -Also, that the pilot project would provide equal resources to candidates, reverse the escalating cost and free candidate~ from the chore of raising money, (based on the laws currently in effect in Maine and Arizona), as well as strengthen public confidence in the democratic process. The group also examined the charge to the Clean Elections Commission to: - examine the positive and negative aspects of the experience - review and recommend criteria for selecting districts and setting the seed money and qualifying contribution amounts - establishing support for primary races in 2007 - consider feasibility of applying to all races - means to finance clean elections and other matters.

  • 2013 New Jersey Election Results
2013 New Jersey Election Results SUMMARY As indicated by all of the pre-election polls Governor Chris Christie (R) cruised to victory over challenger State Senator Barbara Buono (D). With this significant re-election victory the Governor’s 2016 national aspirations become even more realistic. At the same time Chris Christie’s win did not result in down ballot coattails, both houses of the New Jersey Legislature remained under Democratic control with only two Republican gains in the Assembly. GOVERNOR As expected, Governor Chris Chirstie (R) easily won re-election for a second term as Governor of the State of New Jersey over challenger State Senator Barbara Buono (D) by a resounding margin of 60% to 38%. The Governor carried every county in the state with the exception of the traditional democratic strongholds of Essex and Hudson. Even in those democratic areas Buono’s margin of victory lagged far behind normal pluralities. LEGISLATURE Targeted Districts 1st Legislative District (Cape May and parts of Atlantic and Cumberland Counties) Incumbent State Senator Jeff Van Drew (D) withheld a significant challenge from Susan Schmidt (R) winning the district with 59% to 40% percent of the vote and Assemblyman Bob Andrzejcak retained his seat with 27% of the vote. However - Republicans may have picked up one seat with Cumberland County Freeholder Sam Fiocchi (R) defeating incumbent Assemblyman Nelson Albano (D). The incumbent faced criticism since The Star-Ledger reported how he used his position to try to get out of a speeding ticket. Since the difference between the candidates is only 1284 votes a recount is possible.

  • (Mobile) [email protected] Ed. Note: a List of Endorsed Candidates Is Attached
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Nat T. Bender August 25, 2011 908‐377‐0393 (mobile) [email protected] Ed. Note: a list of endorsed candidates is attached American Federation of Teachers New Jersey Endorses State Legislators in Key Districts Education worker federation of 30,000 endorses candidates who stood up for collective bargaining EDISON…Endorsing a fewer number of candidates in November’s legislative elections translates into a focus on contributing to key wins and recognizing legislators who stood up for collective bargaining in the June pension and health insurance debate, according to American Federation of Teachers New Jersey (AFTNJ) political education co‐chair Jon Erickson. “Our committee recommended a few challengers to threaten Republican incumbents since the GOP voted as a block to limit public workers’ collective bargaining rights,” said Erickson, a Kean University Public Administration Professor. “As per calls from our members, we did not endorse any candidate—Democrat or Republican—who voted in favor of the pension and health insurance benefits legislation euphemistically termed ‘reform,’” he said. “We are asking our members to work with us in defending Democratic legislators in competitive districts in both the House and Senate who have consistently been advocates of workers’ rights.” The union federation is mobilizing members to knock on doors, make phone calls and have workplace discussions about candidates who actually make a difference, said Erickson’s political education co‐chair, Elizabeth Gray, a high school teacher in Garfield. “There is an unfortunately high‐level of cynicism among union members these days,” said Gray, who is also an officer with the Bergen County Central Labor Council.

MEMORANDUM FROM: Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland & Perretti LLP DATE: November 9, 2011 SUBJECT: New Jersey 2011 General Election Results On Tuesday, November 8, 2011, New Jersey voters went to the polls for the legislative and local elections. All 120 seats in the New Jersey Legislature were up for election. As a result of the election, the Democrats retained control of the Assembly where they presently hold a 47-33 margin. Going into the new session in January, the split in the Assembly will by 48-32 given the loss of one Republican seat (Domenick DiCicco). The other two competitive races in the State Senate saw the Democrats hold on to both seats. In District 2, incumbent Democrat Senator Jim Whelan won the election by a 54 to 46% margin over Republican Assemblyman Vincent Polistina. This race may break fundraising and spending records as a result of close to a $4 million tab. In what was touted as having the greatest potential for a Republican victory, in District 38, incumbent Democrat Bob Gordon retained his seat and defeated Bergen County Republican Freeholder Chairman John Driscoll by a 53 to 47% margin. Although originally targeted as a competitive race, the 14th District race saw incumbent Senator Linda Greenstein defeat Republican challenger Richard Kanka by a 55 to 45% margin. Kanka did not carry his hometown of Hamilton. As a result, the Democrats current control (24-16) of the Senate will remain in tact. - 1 - There were only a handful of contested Assembly races in the 40 legislative districts, but a significant number of new legislators will nonetheless be sworn in on January 10, 2012.
