Public computers, photocopiers, movie licenses, and coffee supplies are just a few of the things the Friends of the Morinville Public Library have been able to gift the library through fundraising. The non-profit Society recently held their annual general meeting, appointing an executive and brainstorming to see how the group can best support the library's needs. President Keith Norris, Vice President Cheryl Pasechnik, Treasure Shelley Faganello, Secretary Kelly Harding, join fellow executive members Dick Bolivar, Ashley Kain, and Stacey Buga in running the Society and organizing the various events. "We fundraise so that we can buy stuff for the library," said Vice President Cheryl Pasechnik. "We buy new computers for the public and the staff. We have bought shelving. We bought all the new games when we started that program. We've helped out with the Lego Club, the Minecraft Club. We also pay for little extra things like the photocopier, the tables and chairs in the program room. Anything the library's budget doesn't cover." Letter: Simple Living Comunity Guild coming to the library Morinville Community Library is offering a new free program this spring called Simple Living Community Guild, facilitated by Sherri Morrison, who is an Organic Master Gardener and Permaculture Designer. The idea behind the program is to inspire the community to live a simplified life which will lead to the benefits of saving money, reducing stress, strengthening families and caring for the environment. The meetings are intended to be light-hearted and relaxed, allowing community members to engage in themed talks, a Q & A session, and social time. There will be a ‘Swap and Share’ table set up for individuals to bring in items that are in good, usable, condition. Suggested swapping items are: seeds, craft supplies, clothing, small household items, plant cuttings, books, etc. The topics for Simple Living will cater to all interests, such as lowering your food bill, reducing household water usage, composting, vermicomposting, recycling and repurposing, fermenting and food preservation, container food growing, making homemade cleaners and personal care items, amongst many others. The first session is called ‘Grow Your Groceries’ and will focus on planning for a successful growing season using permaculture design strategies. Individuals will learn how to reduce their food bill, improve their health, and care for the earth. Some of the topics that may be discussed are: how to choose and prepare the best site for a garden, how to plan for water and fertility, choosing what to grow, mulching, “pest” prevention, season extension, plus more. Letter: Aggressive Driving The Simple Living Community Guild will take place every second Wednesday, and every fourth Tuesday, from 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM in the Morinville Community Library program room. Alberta will launch its fourth area code this weekend. The new province- wide 825 area code will fill the void when the 403, 587, and 780 area codes run out. The province only had one area code (403) until 1999. On Jan. 1 of that year, the 780 was introduced for Northern Alberta. The 587 area code joined the existing two in September of 2008 for use throughout the province. You did have to go to the mission, and a call cost 20 cents, which was a lot back then.” Garrett said the settlers Morin brought to the community were instrumental in cutting and preparing the telephone poles. “The settlers provided the tamarack poles, 16 for each mile,” Garrett explained. “That was a lot of work. The government provided two phones. Morin worked for the government bringing settlers to the area.” Accompanying the museum’s display of Morinville’s introduction to the telephone is a display of the various phones over the years. Garrett said the exhibit was loaned to the Musée Morinville Museum by one of the museum’s volunteers husbands who retired from Alberta Government Telephone, a crown corporation that provided phone service to most of the province from 1906 to 1991. “This was at AGT and they, in turn, donated it to Morinville from their historical collection,” Garrett said. The AGT exhibit of phones joins some early phones already in the museum’s collection. They can all be viewed Wednesday through Saturday from noon until 5 p.m. The Musée Morinville Museum is located in the former Convent building at the back of St. Jean Baptiste Park. by Morinville News Staff

Champion Petfoods was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Small & Medium Employers of 2016 through the Canada’s 100 Top Employers project. Canada’s Small & Medium Employers recognizes the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that offer the nation's best workplaces and forward-thinking human resources policies. The editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers evaluate companies using eight criteria: physical workplace; work atmosphere and social; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement. Champion was recognized for encouraging employees to save for the future with contributions to a defined benefits pension plan, and helping employees balance work and their personal lives through a variety of alternative work arrangements, including flexible hours, telecommuting and a compressed work week option. “It is tremendously exciting to be named one of the Top Small and Medium Employers in Canada,” said Frank Burdzy, Champion Petfoods President and CEO. “Our vision is to be trusted by pet lovers worldwide; this award is a testament to our team living our vision, mission and values. The leadership, authenticity, innovation and responsibility demonstrated by our team every day is the reason we have been recognized for this award.” Champion Petfoods has 249 full-time and four part-time employees in Canada. The company added 35 new positions in the past year. The Morinville company was previously named one of Alberta’s Top Northern lights 70 Employers of 2016 in February of this year. Craig Scharmann sent us these two amazing photos of the Northern Lights taken from the Morinville Fish and Game Association pond area Saturday night.

A new name and new direction are two of the things the Morinville and District Chamber of Commerce are hoping will provide the remedy to revitalize the business organization’s annual spring trade show. If that doesn’t do it, the 2016 iteration of the annual event will be the last. “It’s a new look. We’ve got more meat and potatoes in it,” said Trade Show Chair Penny Modien. “There seems to be interest, and maybe it’s because they’ve all heard it may be our last if it doesn’t go. It’s a lot of work.” Modien said though the motivation behind the annual event is to showcase businesses in the region, the show is also a fundraiser to help support the Chamber’s other operations and programs. One sport helps another in muddy snowpitch event by Morinville News Staff

A lack of snow didn’t stop a record number of teams gathering in Cardiff Park for the annual Snowpitch Tournament. The day-long event was a fundraiser for Morinville Youth Basketball. This year’s event took place over the Easter weekend to give players a fun time raising funds for the basketball program in the community. “We had 16 teams, which is a full tournament,” said organizer Serge Froment, adding they have not yet calculated just how much money was raised from the Mar. 26 event. Froment did say the funds will go towards special coaching and player clinics that will take place in Morinville in the year ahead, offering additional skills development for the successful basketball program. Typically played in the snow, the unusual sporting event was a little messier this year due to the lack of snow. “The snow part of the Snowpitch turned into mud pitch,” Froment said. “The winner was Down and Dirty, organized by Scott Mason. He and his team are the team that has been in our tournament the most consistently over the years.”
