Huskers By State: (16 total represented): Sophomore Travis Shufelt’s bid for his first conference championship at 149 pounds fell just Nebraska (7), Kansas (3), Missouri (3), South Dakota (3), short as he was defeated by top-seeded Jerrod Sanders of Oklahoma State, 7-5. In the second Wisconsin (2), Utah (2), Oklahoma (1), Idaho (1), Illinois (1), Iowa (1), Minnesota (1), Montana (1), (1), period, Sanders jumped out to a 5-2 lead before Shufelt countered with an escape and takedown New Mexico (1), Pennsylvania (1), Tennessee (1) to tie the match at five. Wrestler Wins Date Illinois was ranked fourth when the Huskers posted a 20-17 win over the Illini on Jan. 11 at the Mitch Manstedt 10 12/13-1/10 Virginia Duals. The win over the Illini marked the first time since 1998-99 that the Husker Matt Murray 9 12/13-1/10 wrestling team beat a team ranked in the nation’s top five. In 1998-99, NU defeated fourth-ranked Joey Malia 8 12/13-1/4 Oklahoma, 18-17, in Norman. The win also was Mark Manning’s first win over a top-five ranked Jacob Klein 8 12/13-1/4 opponent while at NU. He has won 12 of 32 matches against ranked teams at NU. Jason Powell 8 1/7-1/31 The win over Illinois also marked the first time since 2000-01 that NU has posted more than Jason Powell 7 12/13-1/4 one win over a ranked opponent in a season. Travis Shufelt 7 12/13-144 Travis Pascoe 7 12/13-1/4 Home Sweet Home B.J. Padden 7 12/6-12/13 With two victories on Feb. 22, NU recorded its seventh and eighth home victories of the season, Travis Shufelt 7 1/10-1/25 its most home dual wins since 1996-97. The 1993-94 team won a school record nine home duals. Justin Ruiz 7 1/31-3/8 Nebraska finished its home dual season with a 7- 1record. six wreslters with 4 6 times *Note: Current win Streaks in Bold Jason Powell Keeps Moving up the Charts With 29 wins on the season, Powell needs just one more wins to become the 51st wrestler in NU history to record 30 or more wins in a season. Also with a winning percentage of .785, Powell is just off the career top-10 for winning percentage. His career record is 77-21, including 29-5 this season. Powell finished 20-2 in dual competition the third most in NU history.

Huskers Battling Injuries in 2003 The NU wrestling team has had its fair share of injuries this season. Six NU wrestlers have missed some action this season while recovering from different injuries. Third-ranked, 197-pounder Justin Ruiz was out for two months while recovering from a hamstring injury he sustained at the Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 6. 133-pounder Joey Malia missed duals against Cal Poly, Fresno State and Wyoming while recovering from a knee injury. Sophomore Matt Murray missed the final month and a half as imjuring his jaw in practice. Redshirt freshman James Pummel has been out since Dec. 26 while recovering from injuries sustained during a car accident. Fellow redshirt freshman and 184-pounder B.J. Padden missed duals against UNK and Findlay while recovering from the same accident that injured Pummel. NU lost freshman Kyle Gubbels (197) for the remainder of the season after injuring his thumb against Wyoming on. Jan. 31.
