'~ '· APOLLO 14 STATUS REPORT Apollo 14 astronaut crew activities include physical examination at MSC, guidance and navigation system briefing, contingency (one-man) EVA simulation on January 5; lunar descent flight simulations with flight controller participation on January 6; lunar orbit and descent orbit insertion simulations with the flight controllers on January 7; EVA simulation with the flight controllers on January 8; and press interviews on January 9 at MSC Hypergolic propellants-- those which ignite spontaneously when the fuel and oxydizer meet-- will be loaded in the Apollo 14 spacecraft and in the auxiliary propulsion system of the Saturn third stage from January 4 to 8. Then RP-1 fuel will be loaded aboard the Saturn V first stage on January 9. Also during the week, spacecraft pyrotechnics will be installed, Saturn first stage engines will be leak-checked. and flight stowage of the modularized equipment stowage assembly in the lunar module descent stage will be accomplished. Preparations of the Apollo 14 space vehicle continue to proceed satisfactorily for a scheduled launching January 31 from Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39. Fifteen potential Skylab astronauts are scheduled to visit Sacramento Peak Observatory, Sunspot. New Mexico for solar telescope training on January ' and 7. The second stage for the 13th Saturn V rocket departed the NASA Mississippi Test Facility December 30 aboard the barge Poseidon for the Kennedy Space Center. Allen serves as the Program Executive for Crew Health Christine Anderson is the Executive Director of the New Mexico and Safety at NASA Headquarters, Washington DC, where he Spaceport Authority. It took him just 108 minutes to orbit the Earth and he returned as the World’s very first space man. To mark this historic flight, film maker Chris Riley of In the Shadow of the Moon fame has teamed up with the European Space Agency and the Expedition 26/27 crew of the International Space Station, to create a new film of what Gagarin first witnessed fifty years ago. By matching the orbital path of the Space Station, as closely as possible to that of Gagarin’s Vostok 1 spaceship, and filming the same vistas of the Earth through the new giant cupola window, astronaut Paolo Nespoli, and documentary film maker Christopher Riley, have captured a new digital high definition view of the Earth below, half a century after Gagarin first witnessed it. -

TABLE 1 GEOLOGIC FIELD-TRAINING OF NASA ASTRONAUTS BETWEEN JANUARY 1963 AND NOVEMBER 1972 The following is a year-by-year listing of the astronaut geologic field training trips planned and led by personnel from the U.S. Geological Survey’s Branches of Astrogeology and Surface Planetary Exploration, in collaboration with the Geology Group at the Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Texas at the request of NASA between January 1963 and November 1972. Regional geologic experts from the U.S. Geological Survey and other governmental organizations and universities s also played vital roles in these exercises. [The early training (between 1963 and 1967) involved a rather large contingent of astronauts from NASA groups 1, 2, and 3. Among the nine astronaut trainees in Flagstaff for that initial astronaut geologic training exercise was Neil Armstrong--who would become the first man to step foot on the Moon during the historic Apollo 11 mission in July 1969! The other astronauts present included Frank Borman (Apollo 8), Charles "Pete" Conrad (Apollo 12), James Lovell (Apollo 8 and the near-tragic Apollo 13), James McDivitt, Elliot See (killed later in a plane crash), Thomas Stafford (Apollo 10), Edward White (later killed in the tragic Apollo 1 fire at Cape Canaveral), and John Young (Apollo 16). -

Chapter Two Project Apollo: Americans to the Moon John M. Logsdon Project Apollo, the remarkable U.S. space effort that sent 12 astronauts to the surface of Earth’s Moon between July 1969 and December 1972, has been extensively chronicled and analyzed.1 This essay will not attempt to add to this extensive body of literature. Its ambition is much more modest: to provide a coherent narrative within which to place the various documents included in this compendium. In this narrative, key decisions along the path to the Moon will be given particular attention. 1. Roger Launius, in his essay “Interpreting the Moon Landings: Project Apollo and the Historians,” History and Technology, Vol. 22, No. 3 (September 2006): 225–55, has provided a com prehensive and thoughtful overview of many of the books written about Apollo. The bibliography accompanying this essay includes almost every book-length study of Apollo and also lists a number of articles and essays interpreting the feat. Schweickart 892 La Sierra Drive Sacramento, CA 95825 Dear Rusty: Thank you for your letter of January 30, 1984, bringing me up-to-date on your efforts to form a "Planetary Congress of Space Explorers." ) Rusty, I see no way that you and I are going to agree on the ad- visability of an effort along the lines that you describe. I do not think I am alone among our colleagues in this regard. Therefore, at the least, you must keep at a minimum any appearance that this group, if formed, has an "Astronaut" sanction. However, my concern goes much deeper than the possibility that our apolitical stature as astronauts will be compromised by this or- ganization. In your letter, you say,"...our intent is not political." However, I see no way that that intent can be realized in the context of your proposal. In fact, in your proposed statement of purpose en- closed with your letter, you say in the last paragraph, "It is then the intention of this organization...to meet, confer, to speak and act from this unique experience." I see no way that a group of cosmo- nauts and astronauts "speaking" and "acting" will not be interpreted and used as political statements in less than the "largest and highest sense of that word." An initiative of this kind just does not seem appropriate in view of the continuing international arrogance of the Soviet Union and the largely military context in which their space program is conducted. -
