Rock Run Greenway Protect, Preserve and Expand our Green Legacy: Rock Run Greenway ROCK RUN GREENWAY Theodore Marsh – the last unprotected gap in the 9-mile Rock Run Greenway in the Joliet-Lockport area – was acquired during the Centennial by the Forest Preserve of Will County. This acquisition achieves two Green Legacy goals – preserving regionally significant open space and completing our regional trail system. Rock Run consists of 1,200 acres of high quality wetlands and uplands inter- connected by a greenway trail that forms a loop connect- ing to the I & M Canal Trail and the Grand Illinois Trail. Rock Run Greenway is an example of creative collabora- tion among several units of government working together to enhance local quality of life by protecting a valuable Forest Preserve District of Will County natural area.     Protect, Preserve and Expand our Green Legacy: Old Plank Road Trail OLD PLANK ROAD TRAIL In the works for years, the 21-mile Old Plank Road Trail into Joliet was finally completed during the Centennial by the Forest Preserve District of Will County. It con- nects to Joliet’s municipal bikeway system, which, in turn, connects to the Illinois & Michigan Canal Trail. This exemplifies the Green Legacy approach by closing a critical gap in the Grand Illinois Trail, thereby giving Joliet and many other neighborhoods and communities new connections to rivers and streams and better ac- cess to nearby forest preserves and parks. The trail passes through rare railroad prairie (Dewey Courtesy of Openlands Helmick Nature Preserve) and a wetland habitat with REGIONAL GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE more than 200 native plants and 160 species of birds.
