CDD 901 Esta tese é dedicada à Amanda e Catarina Cieslak, com todo o meu amor. i Resumo A presente tese tem por objetivo analisar as características principais da ideia de história identificada em parte da obra do escritor britânico H. G. Wells (1866-1946). Esta abordagem envolve, por um lado, as questões usuais que acompanham o trabalho do historiador, como por exemplo, sua concepção e diálogo com as fontes, temas preferenciais, filiação intelectual e recortes temáticos, mas especialmente a identificação de uma determinada concepção de tempo que se presume universal e o entendimento do papel da história em sua proposta de reforma social. Esta ideia de história pode ser compreendida quando percebida em uma comunidade intelectual específica, que repercute o fato de Wells, ao escrever a História universal (1919), apresentar-se indiretamente como historiador, e discute não só sua proposta historiográfica, mas também as ideias que ela apresenta. A concepção de H. G. Wells como historiador pode ser percebida a partir da identificação de uma possível filosofia da história implícita em seus textos, seja nos romances de retórica científica, nos artigos científicos ou em suas utopias que se propunham modelos de reestruturação social. Na primeira parte sugiro que é possível identificar algumas questões que formam, em conjunto, uma metanarrativa teleológica cuja característica central é a produção de um sentido histórico para a grande aventura humana no tempo e no espaço. A segunda parte versará mais diretamente sobre esta ideia de história, a começar pela participação de Wells na Primeira Guerra Mundial e sua proposta de uma educação universal como fundamento da reestruturação social que manifestou em suas utopias. Este novo currículo foi caracterizado pela rejeição ao classicismo e ao modelo patriótico e nacionalista, e sugere a construção de um conhecimento baseado essencialmente na experimentação e racionalização, além da ênfase nas ciências naturais e no ensino tecnológico. Serão analisados artigos e panfletos produzidos entre 1913-14 até 1918, fase em que também podem ser identificados romances que abordam diretamente seu modelo educacional ideal, como Joan and Peter (1918) e The undying fire (1919). Por fim, serão apresentadas algumas possibilidades sobre como Wells está situado em um contexto de produção historiográfica com o qual é possível estabelecer um determinado diálogo, especialmente com a chamada new history. Para pensar as principais características de Wells como historiador aproveito as considerações do teórico alemão Jörn Rüsen acerca da construção do conhecimento histórico a partir de um processo dinâmico que denominou matriz disciplinar, um conjunto sistemático de fatores que explicam os princípios constitutivos da “ciência da história”. A concepção geral das intenções de Wells enquanto historiador foi pensada a partir da inspiração em Reinhart Koselleck, e sua proposta conceitual em estabelecer uma racionalidade explicativa entre as três instâncias de temporalidade – passado, presente e futuro – consideradas intercambiantes na perspectiva de compreensão do tempo histórico, um tempo concebido, sobretudo, como múltiplo. Wells; História universal; Historiografia contemporânea; Nova História; Teoria e Filosofias da História ii Abstract This thesis aims to analyze the main features of the idea of history identified in part the work of the British writer H. G. Wells (1866-1946). This approach involves, on the one hand, the usual issues in the historian's work, such as its dialogue with the sources, issues, intellectual affiliation and themes, but especially the identification of a conception of time presumed as universal and the understanding of the role of history in its proposed social reform. This idea of history can be understood when perceived in a specific intellectual community, which reflected the fact of Wells, writing the Universal History (1919), indirectly present himself as a historian, and discusses not only his historiographical proposal, but also his ideas. The design of H.G. Wells as a historian can be seen as from the identification of a philosophy of history in his writings, whether in scientific rhetoric novels, scientific articles or on their utopias that proposed new models of social restructuring. In the first part of this thesis, I suggest that it is possible to identify some issues that together form a teleological metanarrative whose central feature is the production of a historical sense to the great human adventure in time and space. The second part will focus more directly this idea of history, starting with Wells’ participation in the First World War and his proposal for universal education as the foundation of social restructuring that expressed in his utopias. This new curriculum was characterized by the rejection of classicism and the patriotic and nationalist models, and suggests the construction of a knowledge based essentially on experimentation and rationalization, as well as emphasis to the natural sciences and technological education. Will be analyzed articles and pamphlets produced between 1913-14 until 1918, phase in which can also be identified novels that directly address their ideal educational model, as Joan and Peter (1918) and The undying fire (1919). Finally, we will present some possibilities to thinking about how Wells is placed in a historiographical context with which it is possible to establish a specific dialogue, especially with the so- called new history. To think the main features of Wells as a historian I take the considerations of the German thinker Jörn Rüsen about the construction of historical knowledge from a dynamic process called “disciplinary matrix”, a systematic set of factors that explain the principles of "science of history". The overall features of the intentions of Wells as historian was designed from the inspiration in Reinhart Koselleck’s work, and its conceptual proposal to establish an explanatory rationality between the three levels of temporality - past, present and future – considered interchanged from the perspective of understanding of historical time, a time designed primarily as multiple. Lawrence famously told Edward Garnett that he did not wish to be ‘talked about in an Ann Veronica fashion’.2 It is some gauge of the scandal Ann Veronica caused that Lawrence should worry about achieving the same kind of notoriety that Ann Veronica brought Wells. To a modern reader, this might appear surprising, as Ann Veronica does not seem particularly racy. It is certainly less sexually daring than many contemporary sex novels such as Hubert Wales’s The Yoke (1907) or Elinor Glyn’s Three Weeks (1907). Even John St Loe Strachey, a supporter of the National Social Purity Crusade and one of the novel’s most trenchant critics, commented ‘Ann Veronica has not a coarse word in it, nor are the “suggestive” passages open to any very severe criticism.’3 If Ann Veronica did not offend through franker sexual depictions, many critics still accused Wells of supplanting an old morality based on female sexual restraint and the sanctity of matrimony with a new morality of sexual freedom and self-indulgent individualism. Writing in the Daily News, R. A. Scott-James argued: ‘In effect he is content to negate the old morality as something out of date, effete, harmful, tiresome; he puts in its place a negative which masquerades as the supreme assertion of individuality’ (WCH, 157). Wilfred Whitten, writing in T. P.’s Weekly, referred to the novel’s eponymous hero as ‘a modern British daughter defying the old morality, and saying it is glorious to do so’ (WCH, 162).
