  • A History of the New Thought Movement
RY OF THE r-lT MOVEMEN1 DRESSER I Presented to the LIBRARY of the UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO by Victoria College A HISTORY OF THE NEW THOUGHT MOVEMENT BY HORATIO W. DRESSER AUTHOR OF "THE POWER OF SILENCE," * 'HANDBOOK OF THE NEW THOUGHT," "THE SPIRIT OF THE NEW THOUGHT," ETC. NEW YORK THOMAS Y. CROWELL COMPANY PUBLISHERS JUL COPYRIGHT, 1919. BY THOMAS Y. CROWELL COMPANY PREFACE FOR several years there has been a demand for a history of the liberal wing of the mental-healing movement known as the "New Thought." This demand is partly due to the fact that the move- ment is now well organized, with international headquarters in Washington, D. C., hence there is a desire to bring its leading principles together and see in their in to inter- them unity ; and part est in the pioneers out of whose practice the present methods and teachings have grown. The latter interest is particularly promising since the pioneers still have a message for us. Then, too, we are more interested in these days in trac- ing the connection between the ideas which con- cern us most and the new age out of which they have sprung. We realize more and more clearly that this is indeed a new age. Hence we are in- creasingly eager to interpret the tendencies of thought which express the age at its best. In order to meet this desire for a history of the New Thought, Mr. James A. Edgerton, president of the International New Thought Alliance, decided in 1916 to undertake the work.

Pushing to the Front By Orison Swett Marden "The world makes way for the determined man." ----- Originally Published By The Success Company's Branch Offices PETERSBURG, N.Y. ---- TOLEDO ---- DANVILLE --- OKLAHOMA CITY ---- SAN JOSE COPYRIGHT, 1911, ----- Published In E-Book Format By Higher Bracket Online Media Inc. 2007 http://www.HigherBracket.ca ----- FOREWORD This revised and greatly enlarged edition of "Pushing to the Front" is the outgrowth of an almost world-wide demand for an extension of the idea which made the original small volume such an ambition-arousing, energizing, inspiring force. It is doubtful whether any other book, outside of the Bible, has been the turning- point in more lives. It has sent thousands of youths, with renewed determination, back to school or college, back to all sorts of vocations which they had abandoned in moments of discouragement. It has kept scores of business men from failure after they had given up all hope. It has helped multitudes of poor boys and girls to pay their way through college who had never thought a liberal education possible. The author has received thousands of letters from people in nearly all parts of the world telling how the book has aroused their ambition, changed their ideals and aims, and has spurred them to the successful undertaking of what they before had thought impossible. The book has been translated into many foreign languages. In Japan and several other countries it is used extensively in the public schools. Distinguished educators in many parts of the world have recommended its use in schools as a civilization-builder.

True How to Obtain Our Own 3 How To Obtain Our Own – Helen B. True SECTION I Serene I fold my hands and wait, Nor care for wind, nor tide, nor sea; I rave no more 'gainst time or fate, For lo! my own shall come to me. I stay my haste, I make delays, For what avails this eager pace? I stand amid the eternal ways, And what is mine shall know my face. Asleep, awake, by night or day, The friends I seek are seeking me; No wind can drive my bark astray, Nor change the tide of destiny. What matter if I stand alone? I wait with joy the coming years; My heart shall reap where it hath sown, And garner up its fruit of tears. The waters know their own, and draw The brook that springs in yonder heights; So flows the good with equal law Unto the soul of pure delights. The stars come nightly to the sky; The tidal wave unto the sea; Nor time, nor space, nor deep, nor high, Can keep my own away from me. —John Burroughs. 4 How To Obtain Our Own – Helen B. True HOW TO OBTAIN OUR OWN SECTION I John Burroughs has expressed that certainty, that knowledge which comes to the awakened soul, to the effect that there is a sure supply for all its needs—a fulfillment of its every requirement—a coming true of its every earnest dream—a realization of its every high ideal.

INTA Archives Research Guide for Elizabeth Towne Elizabeth Towne (1865-1960) Elizabeth Towne created the metaphysics journal Nautilus in 1909 in Portland, Oregon. She moved to Holyoke in 1880 to marry William Elmer Towne, vice president and secretary of her company called the Elizabeth Towne Company, Inc., after her first marriage to Joseph Holt Struble ended. Towne was instrumental in creating the New Thought movement, which centered on the power of self-help, self-healing, and positive thinking. She believed that being a vegetarian, having strong Christian beliefs, and exercising on a daily basis would assure longevity and happiness. The magazine eventually had 90,000 subscribers and was circulated around the world. She was an international lecturer for the International New Thought Alliance and served on many prominent boards and clubs, including the Hampden County Women's Club of Western Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Federation of Women's Clubs, and the Business and Professional Women's Club. In 1912, she and her husband sat as delegates at the convention of 1916 as one of the three state committeewomen of the Progressive party in 1913 and also served on the board of directors of the Massachusetts Federation of Progressive women.
