A woman servant came into a room in which a child was sleeping and drew the curtains. She glanced mechanically at the house opposite, a stucco house with a portico, and went to the child’s bed. ‘Wake up, Philip,’ she said. She pulled down the bed-clothes, took him in her arms, and carried him downstairs. He was only half awake. ‘Your mother wants you,’ she said. She opened the door of a room on the floor below and took the child over to a bed in which a woman was lying. It was his mother. She stretched out her arms, and the child nestled by her side. He did not ask why he had been awakened. The woman kissed his eyes, and with thin, small hands felt the warm body through his white flannel nightgown. She pressed him closer to herself. ‘Are you sleepy, darling?’ she said. Her voice was so weak that it seemed to come already from a great distance. The child did not answer, but smiled comfortably. He was very happy in the large, warm bed, with those soft arms about him. With so much activity in and around our theatres of late, with the red carpet out for the likes of Twyla Tharp, Chita Rivera, and Sandy Duncan, it’s good to know that we continue to be loyal to and support artists whose evolving careers have made such a contribution to our community, and who are largely responsible for the extraordinary level of accomplishment of these past decades. There is a small cavalcade of Associate Artists returning for this next round, and it’s worth noting that among them, with the presence of director Seret Scott, costume designer Lewis Brown, set designer Ralph Funicello, and the great Kandis Chappell of The Constant Wife, we are also delighted to welcome home to the Carter our beloved Jonathan McMurtry whose tenure here on our stages rivals Craig Noel’s for quality, consistency, and sheer endurance. Trying, directed by Rick Seer, could have been written for Jonathan, and that comfortable fit in no way diminishes our awareness of just how fortunate we are to provide a creative home for these men and women whose talents are so interwoven with the pleasure of our playgoing. We don’t forget nor neglect the men and women upon whose backs we’ve made our reputation, any more than we ever wish to overlook your importance to us in the planning and the sustaining of this Theatre. Box List 1 111 BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH William Somerset Maugham was born in 1874 at the British Embassy in Paris, France to Robert Ormond and Edith Mary Maugham, who had both spent most of their adult lives living in France. Maugham's hardships began early on as he was born with frail health and an understated stature, and without the good looks of his mother. fu January of 1882, Edith Maugham died of Tuberculosis, and from this trauma, Maugham was never to fully recover. Two years later, Maugham's father died of stomach cancer and subsequently, he was sent to the rather alien country of his ancestors to live with his father's clergyman brother, Henry MacDonald Maugham, at the vicarage in Whitstable. A stammer in Maugham's speech soon developed; likely as the result of being forced to speak English rather than the French that he preferred. Life with his uncle and aunt was stable, but lonely, and it was at this age that Maugham's love of reading began to bloom. From May of 1885 to July of 1889, Maugham attended King's School in Canterbury, which was a nightmare he would never quite forget. Deciding to forgo a future with the Church, Maugham escaped to the University of Heidelberg from 1891-92, where he was to discover and embrace Schopenhauer, Ibsen, and his own homosexuality. After a brief stint studying accounting in Kent, Maugham decided to pursue a medical degree at St. -

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study The novel Liza of Lambeth is written by William Somerset Maugham, an English novelist. It is actually his first novel which Maugham wrote as a medical student in London's St. Thomas hospital. It was published in Great Britain by T. Fisher Unwin in 1897 when the author was only 23 years old. This novel has 124 pages and 12 chapters. William Somerset Maugham was born in the British Embassy in Paris on 25th January, 1874. By the time he was ten, both William's parents were dead and he was sent to live with his uncle, the Rev. Henry Maugham, in Whitstable, Kent. After an education at King's School, Canterbury, and Heildelberg University in Germany, Maugham became a medical student at St. Thomas Hospital, London. While training to be a doctor Maugham worked as an obstetric clerk in the slums of Lambeth. He used these experiences to help him write his first novel, Liza of Lambeth (1897).Maugham achieved fame with his play Lady Frederick (1907), a comedy about money and marriage. By 1908 Maugham had four plays running simultaneously in London. During the war, Maugham's best-known novel, Of Human Bondage (1915) was published. This was followed by another successful book, The Moon and Sixpence (1919). Maugham also developed a reputation as a fine short-story writer, one story, Rain, which appeared in The Trembling of a 1 2 Leaf(1921), was also turned into a successful feature film. Popular plays written by Maugham include The Circle (1921), East of Suez (1922), The Constant Wife (1926) and the anti-war play, For Services Rendered (1932).In his later years Maugham wrote his autobiography, Summing Up (1938) and works of fiction such as The Razor's Edge (1945), Catalina (1948) and Quartet (1949).William Somerset Maugham died in 1965. -

Üyesi Mahinur Akşehir Uygur Celal Bayar Üniversitesi Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı Bölümü [email protected] Abstract Of Human Bondage (1915) by Somerset Maugham might be considered to be the story of a boy’s rite of passage, of a troubled love affair or to have a touch of Maugham’s own growth from boyhood to adulthood. However, the novel exceeds these simplistic approaches, touching upon the most intriguing questions of the human condition: the triggering principles of human actions and the question of free will. In this questioning, Maugham’s main philosophical inspiration is Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677) and he borrows the title of his book from Spinoza’s magnum opus, Ethics (1677) in which “Of Human Bondage” is the title of an episode. In his Ethics, Spinoza defines the concept of bondage as man’s inability to have full control over his actions and thoughts and he suggests that even though a human being has the knowledge of good and evil, certain faculties of human nature might lead to false knowledge or imperfection in his/her actions. The novel’s protagonist, Philip, who struggles with this bondage that surrounds him like an alien power that comes from within, as Maugham describes it, becomes the object of this discussion of human freedom or imprisonment carried out by Spinoza and other seventeenth and eighteenth century philosophers such as Francis Bacon, Thomas Hobbes and David Hume. -

William Somerset Maugham and the Nobel Prize Paulus Tiozzo, University of Gothenburg Abstract This article provides an analysis of the Swedish reception and Nobel Prize nominations of William Somerset Maugham. Its purpose is firstly to present a largely unknown aspect of the reception of his work through an assessment of reviews published in Swedish newspapers from 1908 to 1965. These years cover Maugham’s first mention in a Swedish context until the year of his death. Secondly, it will offer an explanation as to why he ultimately did not receive the Nobel Prize, although he was held in high esteem by members of the Swedish Academy, who wrote several reviews of his work. It is probable that this was because of his fame and success rather than for any aesthetic, moral or even political reasons. All these conclusions are derived from an analysis of original documents, including letters and protocols from the archives of the Swedish Academy. The article begins with a brief description of the criteria for the Nobel Prize in Literature and how they were applied at the time of Maugham’s nominations, followed by a discussion of his reception by Swedish critics; the final section concerns the Nobel Prize nominations themselves. William Somerset Maugham was born in Paris, France January 25, 1874. He studied medicine, but gave it up for literature. He wrote short stories, essays, and novels. He died in Nice, France December 15, 1965. Scope and Contents This collection consists mainly of W. Somerset Maugham's correspondence with Bertram Alanson, dating from 1921 through 1958 when Alanson died. Alanson was Maugham's investment consultant, but more importantly he was Maugham's friend. The letters are very revealing about Maugham's activities, his philosophy, his works. -
