Dear Community Partners,

We hope this message finds you and your loved ones healthy, safe and taking appropriate precautions as we all continue to grapple with the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on our lives and our community.

Much of our annual report was written earlier this year and recounts the programs and activities we executed during 2019, which feels like a lifetime ago. Reflecting on what has happened since, we are reminded that the Union Square Partnership was born out of a time when faced financial struggles similar to those confronting us today. In the 1970s, our great City endured a fiscal crisis, and our neighborhood was suffering a devastating decline. The district’s visionary leaders from Con Edison, , and what was then Guardian Life, banded together to revitalize the Union Square- neighborhood, and later founded the City’s first Business Improvement District. THE UNION SQUARE PARTNERSHIP WAS BORN OUT OF A TIME WHEN FACED FINANCIAL STRUGGLES SIMILAR TO THOSE CONFRONTING US TODAY

Organizations across New York City today are tackling the unprecedented challenge of keeping our City running through a global pandemic. USP’s work is just as crucial now as when we were first founded, addressing quality of life issues such as safety and security, while beautifying our public spaces. Traveling throughout the borough over the past few weeks, the impact of our work is clear as our dedicated staff and Clean Team work daily to maintain the district’s streets and our beloved Union Square Park with supplemental services.

Council Member Carlina Rivera and outgoing New School USP’s commitment to our work is unwavering and we are charting a President David Van Zandt joined USP leadership at last year’s forward to continued prosperity. We are proud to serve as the annual meeting. organization that advocates for, beautifies, and catalyzes change in BUILDING the Union Square-14th Street , making it, by any measure, one of the most successful neighborhoods in New York City. William D. Abramson Lynne P. Brown Co-Chair (LDC) Co-Chair & President (BID) It is our honor to serve this vibrant, dynamic community. New York City’s “OneNYC” Plan challenges us to reduce the amount of waste we generate by 90% by 2030. To do this, New Yorkers must reduce non-divertible waste by consuming and disposing with diversion in mind. Achieving this goal will require coordinated effort by residents, businesses, waste haulers and DSNY, as well as the waste handling and material recovery facilities that close our waste loop by feeding diverted material back into the supply chain.

Our effort to keep waste out of sight and out of mind has not been successful. Though trash has no permanent place on city streets, we feel its presence everywhere. Rising costs of waste disposal burden the INCREASING ACCESScity’s resources, and landfills compromise the environment. At the same time, the blight of trash that spills across our public right-of-way hinders our effort to encourage walking, bicycling, shopping and recreation. + CONNECTIVITYThe DaRT system will change our attitude about trash. 50%
