Born ca. 296 in Capadocia, Nina was daughter of Roman general Zabulon (related to St. George the Martyr) and his wife Sosana (her brother was Juvenal, Patriarch of Jerusalem). At age 12, the fervently Christian family traveled to Jerusalem and her parents became monks. An old woman Sara Niaphor cared for and instructed Nina in the faith and told how Christ’s robes had traveled to Georgia, a land of pagans. Nina went to Georgia, performed miraculous healings and converted the Georgian queen, Nana, and eventually also the pagan king Mirian III of Iberia, who, lost in darkness and blinded on a hunting trip, found his way only after he prayed to "Nina’s God". Mirian declared Christianity the official religion (c. 327). Nina continued as missionary among Georgians until her death. Her tomb is at Bodbe Monastery in Kakheti, eastern Georgia. A Venerated saint of the Georgian Orthodox Church, her attribute, a grapevine cross, is a symbol of Georgian Christianity.
