Detailed Information
1. Overall Aims of the Course
The aim of the course is to:
• Provide students with the knowledge and skills sufficient to recognize common skin, sexually transmitted and andrological diseases.
• Help students attain a level of clinical competence sufficient to deal appropriately with dermatological, andrological and sexually transmitted disease cases presenting in the general practice.
2. Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)
a. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of the course, students should know and understand the following: a.1. Basic structure and function of skin and its appendages a.2. Dermatological terminology including primary and secondary lesions a.3. Dermatological history taking and examination 2

• Cutaneous infections (viral, fungal, pyogenic, mycobacterial) and infestations (Scabies and Pediculosis) including epidemiological facts and prophylactic measures.
• Inflammatory and erythematous scaly diseases of the skin (Psoriasis, Eczema, Lichen Planus, and Pitryasis Rosea)
• Urticaria, angioedema and Erythema Multiforme
• Pruritis
• Acne Vulgaris
• Pigmentation disorgers (Chloasma & Vitiligo)
• Hair disorders (Alopecias, Hypertrichosis and Hirsutism)
a.5. Dermatological emergencies and the concept of skin failure, including emergency recognition and first aid initiation e.g.:
• Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis
• Erythroderma
• Urticarial Angioedema
• Stevens Johnson’s Syndrome
• First and Second degree burns

Dermatological therapy, the principles of topical treatment and choice of base (lotion, cream, ointment), phototherapy and photochemotherapy. a.8. The relationship between skin and internal organ disorders, including knowledge of skin eruptions as a sign of internal medical conditions or malignancy. a.9. Diagnosis, management and prophylaxis of the common sexually transmitted diseases e.g.:

By the end of the course, students should be able to b.1. Understand how to plan investigations and management of common skin, sexually transmitted and andrological diseases. b.2. Integrate the clinical findings obtained from history and clinical examination with results of laboratory investigations to reach a diagnosis or differential diagnosis. b.3. Design a suitable management plan for each individual case that may differ according to the patient’s age, medical condition, and psychosocial and economic status.
c. Professional and Practical Skills
By the end of the course, students should be able to c.1. Communicate effectively with patients presenting with skin disease, sexually transmitted disease, sexual disorders or male infertility. c.2. Take and present an appropriate and reliable history. c.3. Examine the skin systematically and describe the physical signs using dermatological terms correctly. c.4. Recognize primary and secondary lesions and configuration of skin lesions. c.5. Differentiate skin lesions of different diseases mentioned in the topics list from each other. c.6. Recognize and differentiate infective skin lesions from each non infective ones. c.7. Recognize skin disease that may be a marker for internal organ disorder.

By the end of the course, students should be able to: a.1. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with patients presenting with skin disease, sexually transmitted disease, sexual disorders or male infertility, and to examine them in a sensitive and courteous manner. a.2. Understand the psychosocial impact of skin, andrological and sexually transmitted disease problems on patients and families, and to deal with them properly. a.3. Understand the importance of good communication between different medical professionals. a.4. 4. Teaching and Learning Methods a. Methods Used a.1. Illustrated Lectures:
• Formal Lectures by professors and assistant professors a.2. Clinical Rounds:
• Clinical demonstration of cases through clinical/ small group sessions by professors, assistant professors, lectures & assistant lecturers. a.3. Problem based learning:
• To study written descriptions of clinical situations a.4. Practical Clinical Techniques:
• Focus on development of practical skills appropriate to the clinical situation.
b. Teaching Plan
1. All the students of the 4th year are divided into groups and each group spends ½ month in the Department. (Actually, each group spends only 13 teaching days because of 2 Fridays). Each group receives lectures that cover the course contents.
2. Each teaching day starts with a formal lecture for 1 hour 45 minutes, followed by a 15 minute break, a 1 hour 45 minute clinical session, another 15 minute break, and a final lecture for 1 hour 30 minutes.
3. Lectures are given by senior staff members (professors and assistant professors) in the Department’s lecture hall in South Valley University Hospital.

4. Clinical sessions are presented by assistant lecturers and lecturers employing live cases selected by residents from the outpatient clinic in South Valley University Hospital
5. In clinical sessions, each group is divided into two subgroups to give students the chance to examine patients at ease.

5. Student Assessment Methods a. Attendance Criteria
The minimal accepted attendance percentage is 75%. Those who fail to attend that percentage will not be allowed to sit for the examinations after the clinical sessions. Attendance is worth 10 marks.

e. Assessment Description
Midterm Assessment
1. A written multiple choice examination is presented to the students for which 10 marks are allocated. Each question consists of a question head followed by four alternative answers from which a student has to the best single answer.
2. 10 marks are allocated to attendance
Final Assessment
1. Oral examination in Dermatology, Andrology and STDs worth 10 marks
2. Clinical test worth 5 marks in which the student is presented with 5 clinical cases and asked for their diagnoses.
