On Epidemic – Prone Diseases, Deaths and Public Health Events Week Number 3 of 2013 (Week Ending 20-01-13) HIGHLIG HTS OF THE WEEK 11 malaria deaths. 242 typhoid suspected cases. 1 anthrax case. 2 snake bites deaths. COMPLETENESS AND TIMELINESS National completeness reported for Week Number 3 slightly decreased from 85% to 84% whilst timeliness decreased from 81% to 74%. Timeliness was low because Mashonaland Central Province reported late because they had no internet DYSENTERY access. All provinces reported. Clinical dysentery cases reported this week are 1171 and no deaths. Of the reported cases 321 (27.4%) were from the under five years of age. The provinces which reported the highest number of dysentery cases are Mashonaland Central (201) and Manicaland (193). The cumulative figure for dysentery is 3 403 and 1 death (CFR 0.03). MALARIA A total of 11 083 malaria cases and 11 deaths were reported this week. Of the cases reported 1 736(15.7%) and one death were under the age of five years. The deaths were reported from Buhera District (1), Chimanimani District (1) in Manicaland Province, Zaka District in Masvingo Province TYPHOID (1), Mutoko District in Mashonaland East Province (2), Two hundred and forty two new typhoid cases were reported Makonde District in Mashonaland West Province (1), this week. The cases were reported from Parirenyatwa Group Harare Central Hospital (4) and Parirenyatwa Group of of hospitals (3), Sanyati District in Mashonaland West Hospitals (1). Of the reported cases 4 436 (48.4%) and 4 deaths were from the under five years of age. The deaths were reported from Chimanimani District (1), Chiredzi District in Masvingo Province (1), Harare Central Hospital (3) and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals(1). The provinces which reported the highest number of diarrhoea cases are Manicaland (1 331) and Mashonaland Central (1 320). Page 1 ANTHRAX One suspected case of anthrax was reported this week. The case was reported from Mutoko District in Mashonaland East Province. The cumulative figure for anthrax is 32. DOG BITES A total of 412 cases of dog bites were reported this week. Of these 24 cases were inflicted by vaccinated dogs. Vaccination status of 388 dogs was unknown. The provinces which reported the highest number of dog bites were Manicaland (91) and Midlands (56). The cumulative figure for dog bites is 1 271. RABIES No suspected rabies cases were reported this week. The cumulative figure for rabies is 1 case and 1 death. SNAKE BITES The total snake bites cases reported this week are 145 and two deaths. The deaths were reported from Harare Central Hospital. The cumulative snake bites cases are 410 and 2 deaths. PLAGUE No suspected cases of plague were reported. INFLUENZA A total of 2 793 influenza cases were reported this week. The cumulative figure for influenza is 12 894. PANDEMIC INFLUENZA A (H1N1) No cases of Pandemic Influenza A (H1N1) were reported since week 44 of 2010. MEASLES Four new suspected cases of measles were reported this week through the Weekly Disease Surveillance System (WDSS). The cumulative figure for suspected measles is 7. No cases of suspected measles were reported through the Case Based Surveillance System (CBSS). AFP/Poliomyelitis No suspected cases of AFP were reported this week through the (WDSS). No new suspected cases of AFP were reported this week through the Case Based Surveillance System (CBSS). NNT No suspected cases of NNT were reported this week through the (WDSS) and (CBSS).
